In tropical montane forests, aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP ) usually decreases with increasing altitude. Besides low photosynthesis (Kitayama and Aiba 2002) and direct impact of low temperatures on plant growth (Hoch and Korner 2003), low ANPP at high altitudes has often been attributed to nutrient limitation (Bruijnzeel et al. 1993; Bruijnzeel and Veneklaas 1998; Tanner et al. 1998). Anion-Exchange Properties of Trifluoroacetate and Triflate Salts of N-Alkylammonium Resorcinarenes

The synthesis of N-benzyl- and N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene trifluoroacetate (TFA) and triflate (OTf) salt receptors was investigated. Solid-state analysis by single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the N-alkylammonium resorcinarene salts (NARSs) with different upper substituents had different cavity sizes and different affinities for anions. Anion-exchange experiments by mixing equimolar amounts of N-benzylammonium resorcinarene trifluoroacetate and N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene triflate, as well as N-benzylammonium resorcinarene triflate and N-cyclohexylammonium resorcinarene trifluoroacetate showed that the NARS with flexible benzyl groups preferred the larger OTf anion…

Effect of blastfurnace slag addition to Portland cement for cationic exchange resins encapsulation

In the nuclear industry, cement-based materials are extensively used to encapsulate spent ion exchange resins (IERs) before their final disposal in a repository. It is well known that the cement has to be carefully selected to prevent any deleterious expansion of the solidified waste form, but the reasons for this possible expansion are not clearly established. This work aims at filling the gap. The swelling pressure of IERs is first investigated as a function of ions exchange and ionic strength. A Method to Quantitatively Trap Volatilized Organoselenides for Stable Selenium Isotope Analysis

If volatile organoselenides are to be analyzed for their stable Se isotope composition to elucidate sources and formation processes, organoselenides need to be trapped quantitatively to avoid artificial Se isotope fractionation. Composting rice straw with sewage sludge and compost effects on the soil-plant system.

Composting organic residue is an interesting alternative to recycling waste as the compost obtained may be used as organic fertilizer. This study aims to assess the composting process of rice straw and sewage sludge on a pilot-scale, to evaluate both the quality of the composts obtained and the effects of applying such compost on soil properties and plant development in pot experiments. Determination of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid in natural water using the capillary electrophoresis combined with enrichment step

A previously elaborated capillary electrophoresis (CE) method used for the determination of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) was slightly modified in order to improve the sensitivity. However, detection limits attained (5 μg mL−1 for glyphosate and 4 μg mL−1 for AMPA) were still not satisfactory for analytical purposes, thus the addition of a preconcentration step before the CE analysis was proposed. AMBERLITE®IRA-900, a strong anion-exchange resin, was used to preconcentrate both analytes in environmental aqueous samples. Adsorption of Db and its homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa on anion-exchange resin in HF solution

Anion-exchange chromatography of element 105, dubnim (Db), produced in the 206 Cm( 19 F, 5n) 262 Db reaction is investigated together with the homologues Nb and Ta, and the pseudo-homologue Pa in 13.9 M hydrofluoric acid (HF) solution. The distribution coefficient (K d ) of Db on an anion-exchange resin is successfully determined by running cycles of 1702 chromatographic column separations. The result clearly indicates that the adsorption of Db on the resin is significantly different from that of the homologues and that the adsorption of anionic fluoro complexes of these elements decreases in the sequence of Ta ≈ Nb > Db > Pa.
