Family language policy among Kurdish–Persian speaking families in Kermanshah, Iran
2022
Abstract Minority language studies have received increasing attention over the last decade in Iran. Drawing on Spolsky’s (Spolsky, Bernard. 2004. Language policy. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) language policy theoretical framework, this inquiry reports on the language ideologies, practices, and management efforts of an under-explored group of Kurdish families residing in the city of Kermanshah. To this end, semi-structured interviews and ethnographic fieldwork guided the collection of data from 40 Kurdish–Persian bilingual parents. The thematic analysis of data revealed glaring inconsistencies among the three elements of family language policy (FLP). That is parents’ strong attachm…
Bolton's intermaxillary tooth size ratios among Iranian schoolchildren.
2010
Objectives: The aims of the present study were to determine anterior and total tooth-width ratios in a representative Iranian sample in Tabriz city and compare them with the Bolton standards. Study design: A total of 54 Iranian schoolchildren (12-14 years old) in Tabriz were examined. Alginate impressions were taken for subjects and poured by the dental stone. The mesiodistal widths of the teeth were measured using a digital caliper. The overall and anterior Bolton's intermaxillary tooth size ratios for each model pair was calculated. Results: There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) between the right and left sides of the dental arch and a symmetry in size exists. There were no sig…
Sedaghatian congenital lethal metaphyseal chondrodysplasia—observations in a second Iranian family and histopathological studies
1987
In 1980, Sedaghatian described in two brothers and one sister a neonatally lethal disorder associated with slight rhizomelic limb shortness, mild platyspondyly, and severe metaphyseal dysplasia. Here data are presented on another Iranian infant with the Sedaghatian syndrome who died on day 4 and was found to have histologic evidence of severe epimetaphyseal dysplasia. The occurrence in children of both sexes in one instance, born to normal parents who were first cousins, and currently apparent confinement of the disorder to Iranians suggests that the Sedaghatian syndrome is an autosomal recessive trait with high gene frequency in Iranians. This may be a more complexly pleiotropic syndrome t…
Distribution of Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica in the endemic area of Guilan, Iran: Relationships between zonal overlap and phenotypic traits
2015
Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease emerging in numerous parts of the world. In any endemic area, the characterisation of scenarios and patterns of infection must always be considered the starting point before implementing any control measure. Fascioliasis is a parasitic disease of different epidemiological, pathological and control characteristics depending on the endemic area and the causal agent, Fasciola hepatica and Fasciolagigantica. Classically it has been accepted that F. hepatica is present worldwide, while the distribution of the two species overlaps in many areas of Africa and Asia. Fascioliasis caused by F. hepatica, F. gigantica and intermediate forms is present in Guilan provin…
Intraspecific variation within Phlebotomus sergenti Parrot (1917) (Diptera: Psychodidae) based on mtDNA sequences in Islamic Republic of Iran.
2007
An intraspecific study on the morphological and molecular characteristics of Phlebotomus sergenti s.l., the main vector of Leishmania tropica, was performed on 28 Iranian populations from 11 provinces and a few samples from Greece, Morocco, Lebanon, Turkey, Pakistan, and Syria. Three morphotypes were identified as A, B and C, with some intermediate forms in the samples under investigation. Based on the number of setae and the width of basal lobe of coxite, differences between A and B morphotypes were highly significant. Excluding one unusual haplotype, sequence analysis of ∼439 bp of mtDNA (a fragment of cytochromeB gene, tRNA for serine gene, and a fragment of NADH1 gene) revealed a 6–7% g…
Core-shell PLA/Kef hybrid scaffolds for skin tissue engineering applications prepared by direct kefiran coating on PLA electrospun fibers optimized v…
2021
Abstract Over the recent years, there is a growing interest in electrospun hybrid scaffolds composed of synthetic and natural polymers that can support cell attachment and proliferation. In this work, the physical and biological properties of polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun mats coated with kefiran (Kef) were evaluated. Gravimetric, spectroscopic (FTIR-ATR) and morphological investigations via scanning electron microscopy confirmed the effective formation of a thin kefiran layer wrapped on the PLA fibers with an easy-tunable thickness. Air plasma pre-treatment carried out on PLA (P-PLA) affected both the morphology and the crystallinity of Kef coating as confirmed by differential scanning…
Influence of the methodology of inoculation in the performance of air-breathing microbial fuel cells
2017
In this work, four air-breathing microbial fuel cells (AB-MFC) were operated for 1 month in order to determine if the methodology of inoculation affects the steady-state performance of this type of MFCs. For this purpose, anaerobic and aerobic sludge were fed to two identical AB-MFCs without any external carbon source into a tight sealed environment during the first three days of start-up. For comparison purposes, other two AB-MFCs were operated mixing the initial sludge and an amount of sodium acetate as substrate. Results point out that the inoculation procedure does not affect the steady-state treatment capacity of the cells but it affects very seriously the production of electricity. On…
In vitro activities of tetracyclines against different clones of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from two Iranian hospitals.
2014
Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as one of the most challenging healthcare-related pathogens and its occurrence has increased worldwide, especially in patients admitted to intensive care units. A. baumannii isolates are frequently resistant to multiple antimicrobial agents and there are recent reports of isolates resistant to virtually all clinically relevant drugs. In the present study, the in vitro activities of tigecycline, minocycline and doxycycline against 67 MDR-AB isolates recovered from 29 burn and 38 non-burn Iranian patients hospitalised in Tehran and Tabriz, respectively, were studied. Tigecycline and minocycline may be still considered effective therapeutic options for MDR-A…
Familial Trichostrongylus Infection Misdiagnosed as Acute Fascioliasis
2015
To the Editor: Human fascioliasis, infection with Fasciola spp. flukes, is highly pathogenic in both acute and chronic phases and can result in death (1). This disease has been recently emerging, in part linked to climate and global changes (2). Human Fasciola infection has been reported in 5 continents and is related to the disease’s wide spread in livestock. Guilan Province in northern Iran is a fascioliasis-endemic area where the largest human epidemics have occurred, together affecting ≈15,000 persons (3). In 2014, 3 sisters (ages 35, 33, and 38) and their 41-year-old brother (patients 1–4, respectively) sought medical care at the same time, all with a 3-week history of symptoms. The pa…
