Surgical management of acute angle-closure glaucoma after toric implantable contact lens implantation
2006
A case of pupillary block after implantation of an implantable contact lens (ICL) is reported, and surgical management and prevention are discussed. In a myopic patient, the best corrected visual acuity in the right eye was 20/50 with -15.50 -3.00 x 175. After uneventful implantation of an ICL, painful acute glaucoma developed with an intraocular pressure beyond measurable values. Apparent anterior vaulting of the ICL suggested a sizing problem. In a situation of a mid-wide dilated pupil, immediate explantation of the ICL was performed. Then, using a preoperative iris photography as guidance, an anterior chamber iris-claw toric phakic intraocular lens was implanted. On postoperative examina…

Lessons learned from a community engagement initiative within Irish higher education
2018
This paper focuses on a community–university partnership built around a programme of study co-created by residents of a disadvantaged community and situated, for the most part, within that community. The aim of this paper is to share lessons learned from this community engagement initiative, as identified through a research study which ran concurrent to the programme. The study involved 41 interviews (18 individual interviews and 23 focus groups) over a two-year period with 28 participants. Participants included students, lecturers and community and university stakeholders. The finding section focuses on the characteristics of the initiative which allowed it to positively impact those invol…
A Frequency-based Approach for Features Fusion in Fingerprint and Iris Multimodal Biometric Identification Systems
2010
The basic aim of a biometric identification system is to discriminate automatically between subjects in a reliable and dependable way, according to a specific-target application. Multimodal biometric identification systems aim to fuse two or more physical or behavioral traits to provide optimal False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR), thus improving system accuracy and dependability. In this paper, an innovative multimodal biometric identification system based on iris and fingerprint traits is proposed. The paper is a state-of-the-art advancement of multibiometrics, offering an innovative perspective on features fusion. In greater detail, a frequency-based approach result…
An Embedded Module for Iris Micro-Characteristics Extraction
2009
In this paper a new approach, based on iris micro-characteristics, has been used to make possible an embedded biometric extractor. This recognition approach is based on ophthalmologic studies that have proven the existence of different micro-characteristics as well as fingerprint minutiae. These micro-characteristics are permanent and immutable and they can be used to create strong and robust identification systems.Biometric recognition systems are critical components of our everyday lives. Since such electronic products evolve to software intensive systems, where software, becoming larger, more complex and prevalent, introduces many problems in the development phases. The development of em…
An embedded iris recognizer for portable and mobile devices
2010
Software-intensive systems play an increasingly dominant role in our lives and daily activities. Several applications, in which a timely response to user and environment stimulus is essential, require real-time software intensive systems. Computation-intensive applications, such as video compression, control systems, security systems, result in significant growth for processor workload. To address the above issues, one possible solution is to design embedded specialized components. At the same time, the integration of new features in portable and mobile devices is rapidly increasing. Several services and applications require robust user authentication for access to services, data, and resou…

ASSESSING THE CLINICAL RELEVANCE AND RISK MINIMIZATION OF ANTIBODIES TO BIOLOGICS IN JUVENILE IDIOPATHIC ARTHRITIS (JIA) (ABIRISK) - PRELIMINARY RESU…
2018
Introduction: ABIRISK is a project funded by Innovative Medicine Initiative, with the aim to investigate anti-drug antibody (ADA) formation in the treatment of JIA with biologics (BPs). A major limitation to the use of biologics is the development of ADA that may decrease the efficacy of BPs. Objectives: The aim of this project is to improve the capability to predict biologic immunogenicity in JIA patients. Methods: JIA Patients (by ILAR criteria) followed by 24 PRINTO centres in 12 countries were prospectively enrolled and treated with Etanercept, Adalimumab or Tocilizumab. Patient’s data were obtained from Pharmachild, a pharmacovigilance data registry of JIA patients. For each patient de…
