Sprint and endurance training in relation to redox and inflammatory status and biomarkers of aging in master athletes

2020

Purpose Studies have shown a positive influence of intense athletic training on several biomarkers of aging, but it remains unclear whether this influence is dependent of exercise-training-mode. This study compared redox balance, cytokine levels and biomarkers of aging between master sprinters and endurance athletes, as well as in young and middle-aged individuals as controls. Methods Participants were male master sprinters (SA, 50±8.9yrs; n=13) and endurance runners (EA, 53±8.2yrs; n=18) with remarkable athletic experience (∼25yrs of practice), besides untrained young (YC, 22.7±3.9yrs; n=17) and age-matched controls (MC, 45.5±9.8yrs; n=12). Preoperative simulation of postoperative iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens position and simulation of aging using high-resolution Scheimpflug imag…

2006

To increase postoperative safety after implantation of iris-fixated phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs), optimal preoperative evaluation and patient selection is mandatory. We present a new software tool in a high-resolution Scheimpflug imaging device that precisely simulates the postoperative position of an iris-fixated pIOL and also simulates the effect of aging on the pIOL's position.

Association between irisin and homocysteine in euglycemic and diabetic subjects

2014

Abstract Objectives The aim of study was to explore whether a relationship exists between homocysteine and irisin in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients—a population with a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease—and euglycemic controls. Design and methods 69 T2D patients and 75 control subjects (adjusted by body mass index (BMI)) were included in the study. Irisin and homocysteine concentrations and anthropometric and biochemical variables were determined. Results Levels of homocysteine were significantly higher (11.0 ± 3.0 vs 12.4 ± 4.2 μmol/l) and levels of irisin were lower (279 ± 58 vs 263 ± 38 ng/ml) in T2D patients. When both T2D and controls were considered, irisin was found to co…

Curvature of iris profile in spectral domain optical coherence tomography and dependency to refraction, age and pupil size - the MIPH Eye&Health …

2016

Purpose Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the anterior segment allows quantitative analysis of the geometry of the iris. We performed spectral domain OCT examinations in healthy emmetropic, hyperopic and myopic subjects to investigate iris curvature and its associations. Methods In a cross-sectional study, out of 4617 eyes (2309 subjects) those with refractive errors of +3 dioptres were identified by objective refraction. The iris was examined using the anterior segment mode of a spectral domain 3D OCT-2000 (Topcon Inc., Japan) in the temporal meridian, and OCT scans were investigated with respect to presence and amount of convex and concave iris configuration. Ninety-three eyes of 50 s…

The effects of prostaglandin F2α in the human eye

1985

The ocular effects of 200 micrograms of topically applied prostaglandin F2 alpha were studied in 18 nonglaucomatous volunteers. A fall in intraocular pressure was seen in the prostaglandin-treated eyes when compared with the placebo-treated control eyes. The maximum intraocular pressure reduction was observed at the 7th h and hypotensive ocular effect persisted for 24 h. Prostaglandins did not produce any change in pupillary diameter or signs of intraocular inflammation visible by anterior segment biomicroscopy or iris fluorescein angiography. The drug caused side effects: conjunctival hyperemia was constant and many patients complained of ocular smarting and headache. It could be useful in…

Short-term Follow-up after Implantation of a Foldable Iris-Fixated Intraocular Lens in Phakic Eyes

2005

Objective To evaluate efficiency, predictability, stability, complications, and patient satisfaction after implantation of a foldable iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) for the correction of myopia. Design Prospective, nonrandomized, comparative (self-controlled) trial. Participants Forty-one eyes of 22 myopic patients aged 18 to 56 years (mean, 36 years) with average sphere of −8.2±2.01 diopters (D; range, −12.25 to −3.75 D) and average preoperative cylinder of −0.90±0.62 D (range, −2.50 to 0.00 D) were enrolled in this prospective study. Methods All eyes underwent implantation of a foldable iris-fixated PIOL with an optical zone of 6.0 mm. The follow-up was 6 months in all cases.…

Factors associated with circulating concentrations of irisin in the general population cohort of the ABCD study

2017

Animal studies have shown that irisin is a myokine secreted following physical exercise, and that it induces the remodeling of white adipose tissue toward brown adipose tissue. Therefore, a protective role of irisin against obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic and cardiovascular conditions has been hypothesized. However, data in humans are contradictory and few data are available concerning the general population. We aimed to evaluate the association between serum irisin concentrations and habitual physical activity, as well as other metabolic and cardiovascular factors in a general population in a Mediterranean area.We considered 858 consecutive individuals included in the ABCD (Alimentaz…

Iris-fixated toric phakic intraocular lens for myopic astigmatism

2011

Purpose To evaluate the efficacy, predictability, safety, stability, and complications of the Artiflex toric iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) for myopic astigmatism. Setting Private practice surgery centers, Valencia and Terrassa, Spain. Design Cohort study. Methods At 12 months, refraction, uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, complications, pIOL misalignment, and endothelial cell count (ECC) were evaluated. Indices of success and misalignment were calculated using vector analysis. Results The study enrolled 42 eyes in 25 patients aged 21 to 39 years. The mean spherical equivalent decreased from −8.85 diopters (D) ± 2.71 (SD) to −0.37 ± 0.46 D, with …

Iris Claw Phakic Intraocular Lens for High Myopia

1997

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The implantation of a WorstFechner iris claw intraocular lens (IOL) is one of the surgical procedures used for the correction of high myopia. This technique reduces myopia with stähle refractive results; however, its potential long-term risks have not been evaluated. We report results in 94 eyes with a minimum follow -up of 3 years. METHODS: We studied 94 eyes of 62 patients with myopia 5= -7.00 diopters (D) who underwent Worst-Fechner IOL implantation. Lens decentration, permeability of the blood-aqueous barrier by iris angiography, and changes in corneal endothelial density were analyzed. RESULTS: Mean follow-up time was 48.9 months (range 36 to 72 mo). Three years af…
