Future contingency and God’s knowledge of particulars in Avicenna

Avicenna’s discussion of future contingent propositions is sometimes considered to entail metaphysical indeterminism. In this paper, I argue that his logical analysis of future contingent statements is best understood in terms of the epistemic modality of those statements, which has no consequences for modal metaphysics. This interpretation is corroborated by hitherto neglected material concerning the question of God’s knowledge of particulars. The complex of ‘Abd al-Samid at Natanz, (end of the first decade of the 14th century) includes several buildings: a four-iwan mosque, an octagonal sanctuary, a minaret, and a mosque from the 1930s fronted by a fourteenth-century portal (pīshṭāq). The portal, the only remains of a khanqah, occupies the western end of the southern façade. It takes the form of an iwan, covered in a rich variety of patterns of colourful glazed tile and unglazed carved terracotta. It is adorned by a majestic muqarnas vault of six rows ending at the top with a starry motif. Psihotropo vielu pielietošanas izpēte islāma ietvaros var veidot jauno redzējumu uz šīs reliģijas teoloģiskajiem aspektiem un sinkrētiskām izpausmēm, it īpaši sūfisma tradīcijas kontekstā. Šīs darbs galvenokārt cenšās noskaidrot: a) kā kaņepes un hašiša pielietojums, balstoties islāma teoloģiskajos aspektos, tiek pamatots sūfiju tradīcijā; b) kas ietekmēja to, ka sūfisms iekļāva savās garīgajās praksēs psihotropo vielu pielietošanu. Darbā aplūkotais laika periods ir no 10. līdz 16. gs. Darbā parādīts, kā hašiša lietojums sūfismā saistīts ar islāma vietējo ticējumu un prakšu sinkrētisko raksturu. En este trabajo se reconstruye y analiza la historia del desaparecido café de España de Valencia, que fue inaugurado el primero de mayo de 1886. En su instalación y decoración intervinieron empresas, artistas y artesanos valencianos. Este espacio para la práctica de la sociabilidad pública fue único en su categoría y sobresalió por su suntuoso ambiente. De hecho, fue considerado como uno de los mejores de Europa y, según Azorín –uno de sus tertulianos–, “no lo habría tampoco en el mismo París”. The eastern regions of Al-Andalus before the conquest by Catalonia-Aragon: An overview

This article sets forth a highly schematic synthesis of current knowledge on the history of the eastern regions of Al-Andalus, particularly Tortosa, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, before they were conquered by the Crown of Aragon between the 12th and 13th centuries. After presenting the informational records on this region, we shall describe the main features in the construction of a society and a political order grounded on Arab-Berber immigrants and the creation of a new agrarian ecosystem. Finally, we shall offer observations of the nature of the legal power and the forms in which authority was exercised.
