How relevant are local climate zones and urban climate zones for urban climate research? Dijon (France) as a case study.

2018

17 pages; International audience; Several typologies of urban surface properties have been proposed, in recent years, for urban heat island studies and climate modeling. Some were specifically developed for cities and urban climate issues, like the Urban Climate Zones, and the more recent Local Climate Zones. The initial objective of this paper is to evaluate the capacity of these two typologies to identify thermal environments in and around cities, and to determine which typology best captures the daily spatio-temporal patterns of surface and urban canopy heat islands. To simulate urban climate with a model, LULC data based on a given typology are required. To avoid circularity, we combine…

Natural History and impacts of an invasive snake: the horseshoe whip snake, Hemorrhois hippocrepis (Linnaeus, 1758), on Ibiza

2021

The island of Ibiza, located in the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean), has remained free of introduced snakes for millennia, unlike the majority of Mediterranean islands. But in 2003, with the Mediterranean garden fad, the entrance of old olive trees to the island became common, and three snake species appeared on Ibiza, traveling as stowaways inside the trunks of the olive trees. The most successful invader was the horseshoe whip snake (Hemorrhois hippocrepis). This PhD dissertation studies the natural history of the invasive population and compares it to the source population’s, in the southern Iberian Peninsula, in order to acquire knowledge that helps fighting against the invasio…

Helminth infracommunities of gallotia caesaris caesaris and gallotia caesaris gomerae (sauria: lacertidae) from the Canary islands (eastern Atlantic)

2004

A survey of gastrointestinal helminth communities of Gallotia caesaris caesaris (Lehrs, 1914) and G. c. gomerae (Boettger and Müller, 1914), from the islands of El Hierro and La Gomera, respectively, in the Canary Archipelago, Spain, was conducted to determine the prevalence, intensity, and diversity of intestinal parasites of these lacertid lizards. Larval forms of cestodes, nematodes, and acanthocephalans were found in the body cavity of G. c. caesaris; this lizard is the intermediate or paratenic host in the life cycle of these helminths. Pharyngodonid nematodes were the most common intestinal helminths in both hosts, 4 of them being Gallotia spp. specialists. Helminth infracommunities o…

UV camera measurement at a dormant volcano

2010

The UV camera is now becoming a new important tool in the armory of volcano geochemists for high rate SO2 flux measurements. The high spatial resolution of the camera is particularly useful for exploring multiple-source SO2 gas emissions, as the large composite fumarolic systems topping most quiescent volcanoes. We report here on the first SO2 flux measurements from individual fumaroles of the fumarolic field of La Fossa crater (Vulcano island, Aeolian island), which we performed using a UV camera in two field campaigns on November 12, 2009 and February 4, 2010. Making advantage of the high temporal and spatial resolution of the UV camera, we derived ~0.5 Hz SO2 flux time-series for the mai…

Tethyan vs. Cordilleran ophiolites: a reappraisal of distintctive tectono-magmatic features of supra-subduction complexes in relation to the subducti…

2004

Abstract Supra-subduction zone (SSZ) ophiolites deserve special attention because they represent fundamental markers of intraoceanic convergence and generation of new lithosphere above subduction zones. Moreover, owing to their structural characteristics and location in the overriding plate, these complexes are far better represented and preserved than Mid-Ocean-Ridge-Basalt (MORB) ophiolites in orogenic belts. In terms of their structure, tectonics, and magmatic features, SSZ ophiolites may be classified in two main types: (1) “Tethyan complexes” (such as those of the Albanide-Hellenide belt), which mostly consist of complete and extensive volcanic, dyke, plutonic, and mantle sections with…

Management of the image of the city in urban planning: experimental methodologies in the colour plan of the Egadi Islands

2022

AbstractThe debate over the value of the image of a city, which since the 1960s has been gaining wider room for reflection, has arisen as a criticism against the reductionism of the Modern Movement and highlighted the value of the qualitative aspects of an urban landscape. The question asked is if urban planning can in some way govern the image of a city. An investigation into which tools and strategies are necessary to defend the narrative of a city, its identity and its genius loci against the homologating forces that are transforming contemporary cities. The article explores the theoretical principles and methods being experimentally used to qualitatively manage the urban environment. Re…

ELEMENTARE E COMPLESSO. La Città per isole. Grammatiche insediative per la città contemporanea

2020

Drawing as a tool for urban regeneration. Application case: the Color Plan of the Egadi Islands

2018

The Egadi Islands, at the western end of Sicily, preserve a cultural and environmental heritage of extraordinary originality. Man’s work, over time, has transformed the landscape: the territory has been shaped by economic activities related to tuna fishing, stone extraction, agriculture. Today, the pressure of tourism threatens to upset this delicate balance built, in centuries, between people and environment. Therefore, the Municipal Administra- tion decided to adopt a Color Plan to manage, in cultural terms, the inevitable processes of territorial transformations. The University and the INBAR (National Institute of Bio-architecture) collaborate with the Municipality to define the Guidelin…
