Coupling of Structural Additions for the Mitigation of Seismic Response in Existing Buildings
2023
In the present paper, additions in structural steelwork are utilized for giving new life to old buildings in regions characterized by medium/high seismic hazard. Two models are here proposed, i.e.: vertical addition for masonry buildings and lateral addition for r.c. buildings. For the model of vertical addition, the connection between the masonry and steel structures is realized by means of an Intermediate Isolation System (IIS). For the model of lateral addition, an exoskeleton (EXO) is connected to the existing building by means of rigid or flexible and dissipative link. Two buildings, representative of the heterogeneous Italian building stock, are selected as case studies. Parametric an…
Robust synchronization and fault detection of uncertain master-slave systems with mixed time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbations
2010
In this paper, the problem of robust synchronization and fault detection for a class of master-slave systems subjected to some nonlinear perturbations and mixed neutral and discrete time-varying delays is investigated based on an H ∞ performance condition. By introducing a descriptor technique, using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a suitable change of variables, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities to synthesize the residual generation scheme. The explicit expression of the synchronization law is derived for the fault such that both asymptotic stability and a prescribed level of disturbance attenuation are satisfied fo…
A Mutation With Major Effects on Drosophila melanogaster Sex Pheromones
2005
0016-6731 (Print) Comparative Study Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; Sex pheromones are intraspecific chemical signals that are crucial for mate attraction and discrimination. In Drosophila melanogaster, the predominant hydrocarbons on the cuticle of mature female and male flies are radically different and tend to stimulate or inhibit male courtship, respectively. This sexual difference depends largely upon the number of double bonds (one in males and two in females) added by desaturase enzymes. A mutation was caused by a PGal4 transposon inserted in the desat1 gene that codes for the desaturase crucial for setting these double bonds. Homozygous mutant flies produced 70-90%…
Psychosocial stress, catecholamines, and essential fatty acid metabolism in rats.
1994
To examine the effects of psychosocial stress and the "stress hormone," epinephrine, on essential fatty acid metabolism in rats, two studies were conducted. In the first, the effects of four weeks of (i) social isolation and (ii) group housing (control) on liver microsomal delta 6 and delta 5 n-6 desaturase activity were studied in group-reared male normotensive (Wistar Kyoto) and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats (n = 5/group). The second study examined the effects of acute ip epinephrine (0.0, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mg/kg) 6 hr prior to and following an ig dose (4 g/kg) of safflower oil (rich in 18:2n-6, LA) on plasma and liver LA, 20:4n-6 (AA), and LA/AA ratios in adult essential fatty ac…
Past climate changes facilitated homoploid speciation in three mountain spiny fescues (Festuca, Poaceae)
2016
Apart from the overwhelming cases of allopolyploidization, the impact of speciation through homoploid hybridization is becoming more relevant than previously thought. Much less is known, however, about the impact of climate changes as a driven factor of speciation. To investigate these issues, we selected Festuca picoeuropeana, an hypothetical natural hybrid between the diploid species F. eskia and F. gautieri that occurs in two different mountain ranges (Cantabrian Mountains and Pyrenees) separated by more than 400 km. To unravel the outcomes of this mode of speciation and the impact of climate during speciation we used a multidisciplinary approach combining genome size and chromosome coun…
Robust fault detection filter design for a class of linear systems with mixed time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbations
2009
In this note, the problem of robust fault detection filter (RFDF) design for a class of linear systems subjected to some nonlinear perturbations and mixed neutral and discrete time-varying delays is investigated based on an H ∞ performance condition. By introducing a descriptor technique, using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a suitable change of variables, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to synthesize the residual generation scheme. Based on Luenberger type observers, the explicit expression of the filters is derived for the fault such that both asymptotic stability and a prescribed level of disturbance att…
Exploring natural products-based cancer therapeutics derived from egyptian flora
2020
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Egyptian plants are a rich source of natural molecules, representing considerable biodiversity due to climate variations between the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western regions of the country. Sinai is considered a precious nature reserves preserving flora, fauna, marine organisms, and historical habitats with ancient origins. Here, traditional medicinal approaches have been used for hundreds of years. Healthy lifestyles, low levels of stress and microbial infections, and a dependence on flora and herbal medicine might in combination explain why the burden of cancer is lower in some regions than in others. Aim of the study The primary aim of this …
Spectroscopy of Alkali Atoms in Solid Matrices of Rare Gases: Experimental Results and Theoretical Analysis
2022
We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of the spectroscopy of dilute alkali atoms in a solid matrix of inert gases at cryogenic temperatures, specifically Rubidium atoms in a solid Argon or Neon matrix, and related aspects of the interaction energies between the alkali atoms and the atoms of the solid matrix. The system considered is relevant for matrix isolation spectroscopy, and it is at the basis of a recently proposed detector of cosmological axions, exploiting magnetic-type transitions between Zeeman sublevels of alkali atoms in a magnetic field, tuned to the axion mass, assumed in the meV range. Axions are one of the supposed constituents of the dark matter (DM) of t…
Intermediate Isolation System with Nonlinear Lower Structure and Isolation System
2023
This paper reports a study on the Intermediate Isolation System (IIS) applied to existing buildings. This kind of application is particularly suitable when a vertical addition is planned for buildings in seismic zones; in such a case, an isolation system can be placed at the base of the extension to prevent the increase, or, better, to reduce the seismic demand on the existing structure. In previous works, parametric response spectrum analyses have been carried out on lumped mass models by varying the period of the isolation system. As a result, a sort of IIS design spectrum has been derived and used for selecting design solutions for the vertical extension that minimize the overall seismic…
Virtual Synchronous Machine Control of RES Plants in Isolated Power Systems
2022
Because of the increase in renewable energy sources (RESs) share, new control strategies of isolated power systems have been developed to improve the frequency and voltage stability of inverter-interfaced RESs. A voltage source converter (VSC) with a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) is among the most promising control schemes. This paper demonstrates how VSM control of inverter-interfaced RES can be efficiently used to improve the dynamic stability in small isolated power systems. In the proposed analysis, the RESs of a Mediterranean island are assumed interfaced to the grid by VSCs with a swing controller and a vector-current controller (VCC) with two different options for the reference c…
