The Role of e-Tutor Competencies in Postgraduate e-Learning Courses: Spotlight on Emotion Management

2021

The role of e-learning in the existing and challenging educational era is crucial. However, it is necessary to overcome some drawbacks such as feelings of isolation and a lack of emotional contact. In this sense, emotion management is a key driver of student satisfaction in e-learning, which is significantly related to students’ motivation, learning, cognitive strategies, self-regulation, and personality antecedents in the classroom. This article examines an online postgraduate course in financial statements auditing, describing the resources used by the e-tutor to conduct affective tutorials, reduce students’ feelings of isolation, increase student involvement, and achieve success in e-lea…

Islands of vulnerability and resilience: Manufactured stereotypes?

2018

This paper interrogates the aspects of islandness labelled ‘vulnerability’ and ‘resilience’ through analysing the concepts’ definitions from a development perspective. The investigation is conducted through the lens of four assumed islandness aspects: boundedness, smallness, isolation, and littorality. Discussion examines how and why core concepts of vulnerability and resilience have emerged from island studies, demonstrating how these two aspects of islandness are socially and culturally constructed, can influence development approaches taken, and are enhanced by island geographies. Drawing on insights from island geographies around the world, while comparing island and non-island perspect…

Data from: Reproductive isolation among allopatric Drosophila montana populations

2014

An outstanding goal in speciation research is to trace the mode and tempo of the evolution of barriers to gene flow. Such research benefits from studying incipient speciation, in which speciation between populations has not yet occurred but where multiple potential mechanisms of reproductive isolation (RI: i.e. premating, postmating-prezygotic (PMPZ), and postzygotic barriers) may act. We used such a system to investigate these barriers among allopatric populations of Drosophila montana. In all heteropopulation crosses we found premating (sexual) isolation which was either symmetric or asymmetric depending on the population pair compared. Postmating isolation was particularly strong in cros…

Data from: The Pillars of Hercules as a bathymetric barrier to gene-flow promoting isolation in a global deep-sea shark (Centroscymnus coelolepis)

2015

Knowledge of the mechanisms limiting connectivity and gene-flow in deep-sea ecosystems is limited, especially for deep-sea sharks. The Portuguese dogfish (Centroscymnus coelolepis) is a globally distributed and Near Threatened deep-sea shark. C. coelolepis population structure was studied using 11 nuclear microsatellite markers and a 497 bp fragment from the mtDNA Control Region. High levels of genetic homogeneity across the Atlantic (ΦST=-0.0091, FST= 0.0024, P > 0.05) were found suggesting one large population unit at this basin. The low levels of genetic divergence between Atlantic and Australia (ΦST= 0.0744, P<0.01; FST=0.0015, P > 0.05) further suggested that this species may …

Data from: Utility of island populations in reintroduction programs—relationships between Arabian gazelles (Gazella arabica) from the Farasan Archipe…

2014

Understanding local adaptation and population differentiation is vital to the success of reintroduction initiatives. Like other mammals living on islands, Arabian gazelles (G. arabica) show reduced body size on the Farasan archipelago, which we corroborated in this study through morphometric analyses of skulls. In light of the steep population decline on the Arabian Peninsula—but stable population development on the archipelago—we tested the potential suitability of Farasan gazelles as a source for reintroductions on the mainland. We, therefore, investigated genetic differentiation between Farasan and mainland populations using eleven nuclear microsatellite loci and detected a distinct gene…

Isolation of Central Nervous System (CNS) Infiltrating Cells

2014

Leukocyte infiltration of the central nervous system (CNS) occurs under certain pathogenic conditions and most often results in severe disorders. Therefore, the isolation and analysis of such infiltrating cell populations is necessary for elucidating the underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Here we describe a simple and straightforward protocol for cell isolation from the inflamed CNS, which combines mechanical dissociation and enzymatic degradation of the tissue. Additionally, purification by Percoll gradient centrifugation provides a great yield of the infiltrating material. The isolated cells can be further used for downstream applications such as cell sorting, cellular or molecular analysi…

Analysis and review of the perioperative management of COVID-19 patients in thoracic surgery.

2021

Acute and chronic effects of clomipramine on isolation-induced aggression in male mice

1994

The behavioral effects of clomipramine were studied on an ethopharmacological model of aggression. A range of low doses (similar to those used in clinical practice: 1.5, 3, and 6 mg/kg) and a higher dose (24 mg/kg—more usual in animal experimentation) were administered to isolated male mice that confronted anosmic opponents in a neutral arena. Encounters were staged 30 min after acute treatment and either 30 min or 24 h after the last drug administration in the chronic (21-day) treatment. Significant behavioral effects were observed predominantly with the highest dose. Acute and chronic effects were similar in the sense that both decreased aggressive behavior and produced some impairment of…

Microbial technologies for the discovery of novel bioactive metabolites

2002

Soil microbes represent an important source of biologically active compounds. These molecules present original and unexpected structure and are selective inhibitors of their molecular targets. At Biosearch Italia, discovery of new bioactive molecules is mostly carried out through the exploitation of a proprietary strain collection of over 50000 strains, mostly unusual genera of actinomycetes and uncommon filamentous fungi. A critical element in a drug discovery based on microbial extracts is the isolation of unexploited groups of microorganisms that are at the same time good producers of secondary metabolites. Molecular genetics can assist in these efforts. We will review the development an…

"It's like being stuck on an unsafe and unpredictable rollercoaster": Experiencing substance use problems in a partner.

2020

Living with a partner with substance abuse problems may induce strains in an individual’s everyday life, including poor health, disrupted family life, and social isolation; this may lead to dropping out of education or work, a lack of safety and support, and facing various dilemmas and stigma.Aim:The purpose of this study was to explore these partners’ everyday life experiences, including their parental roles.Method:A qualitative design comprising qualitative interviews with ten partners and ex-partners was performed, and a thematic analysis was used. Results:The findings demonstrated that sharing their lives, including parenthood, with a partner with substance use problems affected every as…
