First measurement of the lifetime of the charmed strange baryon Ξc0

1990

Abstract We have observed four unambiguous decays of the charmed strange baryon Ξco in the NA32 experiment at CERN. Charge- coupled devices and silicon microstrip detectors were used to reconstruct the decay mode Ξ c o → pK − K ∗ (892) o seen in events produced by the interaction of 230 GeV/c negative poins and kaons on a copper target. We present the first measurement of the lifetime of the Ξco, together with a determination of its mass and production cross section. The resonant components of the Ξco decay are studied. We use our earlier measurement of the mass of the Ξc+ in the determination of the isospin mass splitting of the Ξc states.

High-resolution studies of beta-delayed proton emitters at IGISOL facility

1998

Beta-decays of23Al and41Ti have been studied by applying ion guide techniques, gamma detection and a gas-Si telescope for charged-particle detection. The experimental beta-decay strength of41Ti was found to be quenched by a factor ofq2 = 0.64 compared to our shell model calculations below 8 MeV excitation energy in41Sc. This result is in line with the generally accepted value ofq = 0.77. The isobaric analogue state of the41Ti ground state was measured to contain 10(8)% isospin impurity. This relatively high value could be well reproduced by the shell model calculation in thesdfp space. Gamma-decay of theT = 3/2 isobaric analogue state in23Mg was observed together with its decay by proton em…

Search for a new weakly interacting particle

1991

Abstract A search for events of the type e + e − →l + l − X 0 , where X 0 can be any weakly interacting particle which couples to the Z, has been performed with the ALEPH detector at LEP, by searching for acollinear lepton pairs. Such particles can be excluded up to a mass of 7.0 GeV/c 2 for a value of the ratio of branching fractions, Br( Z →X 0 l + l − )/Br(Z→ l + l − ), greater than 2.5 × 10 −3 if the X 0 has third component of isospin, I 3 greater than 1 2 and decays to a pair of virtual gauge bosons. When this analysis is combined with the previous results of the Higgs particle searches from ALEPH, this limit can be extended to an X 0 mass of 60 GeV/c 2 .

Search for the rare decaysB→πℓ+ℓ−andB0→ηℓ+ℓ−

2013

We present the results of a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decays B → πl^+ l^- (π = π^±, π^0 and l = e, μ) and B^0 → ηl^+ l^- using a sample of e^+ e^- → Υ(4S) → BB decays corresponding to 428  fb^(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the BABAR detector. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the isospin and lepton-flavor averaged branching fraction of B(B → πl^+ l^-)<5.9 × 10^(-8) and a lepton-flavor averaged upper limit of B(B0 → ηl^+ l^-) < 6.4 × 10^(-8), both at the 90% confidence level. We also report 90% confidence level branching fraction upper limits for the individual modes B^+ → π^+ e^+ e^-, B^0 → π^0 e^+ e^-, B^+ → π^+ μ^+ μ^-, B…

Determination of γ and−2βsfrom charmless two-body decays of beauty mesons

2015

Using the latest LHCb measurements of time-dependent CP violation in the B-s(0) -> K+K- decay, a U-spin relation between the decay amplitudes of B-s(0) -> K+K- and B-0 -> p(+)p(-) decay processes allows constraints to be placed on the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle and on the B-s(0) mixing phase -2 beta(s). Results from an extended approach, which uses additional inputs on B-0 -> pi(0)pi(0) and B+ -> pi(+)pi(0) decays from other experiments and exploits isospin symmetry, are also presented. The dependence of the results on the maximum allowed amount of U-spin breaking is studied. At 68% probability, the value gamma =( 63.5(-6.7)(+7.2))degrees modulo 180 degrees is determined. In an a…

Isospin breaking andf0(980)-a0(980)mixing in theη(1405)→π0f0(980)reaction

2012

We make a theoretical study of the eta(1405) -> pi(0)f(0)(980) and eta(1405) -> pi(0)a(0)(980) reactions with an aim to determine the isospin violation and the mixing of the f(0)(980) and a(0)(980) resonances. We make use of the chiral unitary approach where these two resonances appear as composite states of two mesons, dynamically generated by the meson-meson interaction provided by chiral Lagrangians. We obtain a very narrow shape for the f(0)(980) production in agreement with a BES experiment. As to the amount of isospin violation, or f(0)(980) and a(0)(980) mixing, assuming constant vertices for the primary eta(1405) -> pi K-0 (K) over bar and eta(1405) -> pi(0)pi(0)eta production, we f…

Search for the isospin violating decayY(4260)→J/ψηπ0

2015

Using data samples collected at center-of-mass energies of root s = 4.009, 4.226, 4.257, 4.358, 4.416, and 4.599 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we search for the isospin violating decay Y(4260)-> J/psi eta pi(0). No signal is observed, and upper limits on the cross section sigma(e(+)e(-) -> J/psi eta pi(0)) at the 90% confidence level are determined to be 3.6, 1.7, 2.4, 1.4, 0.9, and 1.9 pb, respectively.

Photoproduction of π 0 mesons off protons and neutrons in the second and third nucleon resonance regions

2018

Photoproduction of mesons off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron allows to study the electromagnetic excitation spectrum of the neutron and the isospin structure of the excitation of nucleon resonances. The database for such reactions is much more sparse than for free proton targets. Single $\pi^0$ photoproduction off quasi-free nucleons from the deuteron was experimentally studied. Nuclear effects were investigated by a comparison of the results for free protons and quasi-free protons and used as a correction for the quasi-free neutron data. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator for photon energies between 0.45~GeV and 1.4~GeV, using an…

Elements of Quantum Electrodynamics and Weak Interactions

2013

Quantum field theory in its application to electroweak and strong interactions has two rather different facets: A pragmatic, empirical one, and an algebraic, systematical one. The pragmatic approach consists in a set of rules and formal calculational procedures which are extremely successful in their application to concrete physical processes, but rest on mathematically shaky ground. The mathematically rigorous approach, in turn, is technically difficult and not very useful, from a practical point of view, for reaching results which can be compared with phenomenology. Generally speaking, quantum field theory quickly becomes rather technical if one wants to understand it in some depth, and g…

Observation of Λc+→nKS0π+

2017

We report the first direct measurement of decays of the Lambda(+)(c) baryon involving the neutron. The analysis is performed using 567 pb(-1) of e(+)e(-) collision data collected at root s = 4.599 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. We observe the decay Lambda(+)(c) -> nK(S)(0)pi(+) and measure the absolute branching fraction to be B(Lambda(+)(c) -> nK(S)(0)pi(+)) = [1.82 +/- 0.23(stat) +/- 0.11(syst)]%. A comparison to B[Lambda(+)(c) -> p( (K) over bar pi)(0)] provides an important test of isospin symmetry and final state interactions.
