Non-isothermal mass transfer of ferrocolloids through porous membrane

Abstract The present paper deals with transport properties of ferrofluid nanoparticles in non-isothermal capillary-porous layer. Experiment establishes that the temperature difference, which is applied across the layer, induces a thermoosmotic pressure gradient directed toward increasing temperature. The measurement results are interpreted in a frame of phenomenology of linear irreversible thermodynamics. The transport coefficients are evaluated comparing the measured separation curves with approximate solution of the corresponding mass transfer problem.

Natural convection heat transfer in a partially—or completely—partitioned vertical rectangular enclosure

Abstract The effect of symmetric partitions protruding centrally from the end walls of a rectangular vertical enclosure on heat transfer rates is investigated numerically. The enclosure has opposite isothermal walls at different temperatures. The Rayleigh number is varied from 10 4 to 10 7 and the aspect ratio from 0.5 to 10. The thickness of the partitions is fixed and equal to one tenth of the width of the enclosure. Their non-dimensional length ( L / H ) is varied from 0 (non-partitioned enclosure) to 0.5 (two separate enclosures). The effect of different thermal boundary conditions at the end walls and at the partitions is included in the investigation.

Genetic analyses aiming at assessing the presence of specific sequences or alleles are often carried out by PCR. Sexing of most birds is nowadays based on PCR with “universal” primers and relies on the assessment of the presence of the sex-linked CHD1-Z and -W alleles. The entire workflow is relatively time-consuming, especially for batch analyses, whereas methods that allow carrying out the entire procedure in a short time are highly desirable. Neutron Diffraction Study of the in Situ Oxidation of UO2

This paper discusses uranium oxide crystal structure modifications that are observed during the low-temperature oxidation which transforms UO(2) into U(3)O(8). The symmetries and the structural parameters of UO(2), beta-U(4)O(9), beta-U(3)O(7), and U(3)O(8) were determined by refining neutron diffraction patterns on pure single-phase samples. Neutron diffraction patterns were also collected during the in situ oxidation of powder samples at 483 K. The lattice parameters and relative ratios of the four pure phases were measured during the progression of the isothermal oxidation. Confinement in micropores and enthalpies of physisorption

Abstract The use of quasi-equilibrium volumetry associated with isothermal microcalorimetry at 77 K allows direct measurement of the interactions on adsorption of simple probe molecules within well crystallised aluminophosphate and zeolite molecular sieves. Four particular cases are presented which show: the effect of varying micropore diameter, the effect of adsorbing molecules with a favourable geometric compatibility with a given micropore system, the effect of varying the field potential within a given micropore system and finally, the effect of variable selective blocking of the micropore system.

A microcalorimetric comparison of the effect ofn-alkane preadsorption on the adsorption of argon and nitrogen on Silicalite-I

Then-alkanes of different lengths were preadsorbed to selectively block part of the micropores of a MFI-type zeolite, Silicalite-I. The porosity available to argon and nitrogen was then studied by quasi-equilibrium adsorption microcalorimetry and volumetry at 77K and compared to what was found for the bare zeolite. Indeed, although partial adsorption ofn-alkanes does not alter the value of the differential enthalpies of adsorption for both argon and nitrogen, then-butane preadsorption diminishes the adsorption capacity by inducing inaccessible volumes in the micropore network. Thermodynamics of transfer of polar additives from the aqueous to the dodecylsurfactant micellar phases

The enthalpies of transfer from water to aqueous surfactant solutions, ΔH(W→W+S), of polar additives have been determined as a function of the surfactant concentration at fixed additive concentration. The surfactants used are sodium dodecylsulfate (NaDS), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO). The additives used are iso-butanol t-butanol, butoxyethanol, phenol, benzene, tributylphosphine oxide (TBPO), octyldimethylphosphine oxide (ODPO), octydimethylamine oxide (ODAO), DDAO and NaDS.
