Automatic Extraction of Blood Vessels, Bifurcations and End Points in the Retinal Vascular Tree

2008

In this paper we present an effective algorithm for automated extraction of the vascular tree in retinal images, including bifurcations, crossovers and end-points detection. Correct identification of these features in the ocular fundus helps the diagnosis of important systematic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. The pre-processing consists in artefacts removal based on anisotropic diffusion filter. Then a matched filter is applied to enhance blood vessels. The filter uses a full adaptive kernel because each vessel has a proper orientation and thickness. The kernel of the filter needs to be rotated for all possible directions. As a consequence, a suitable kernel has been designed …

Modification of LiF structure by irradiation with swift heavy ions under oblique incidence

2013

The structural modifications of LiF irradiated with swift heavy ions under oblique angles have been investigated using AFM, SEM, chemical etching, nanoindentation and optical absorption spectroscopy. LiF crystals were irradiated under incidence angles of 30 and 70 degrees with 2.2 GeV Au (fluence 57?l011 ions-cm2) and 150 MeV Kr ions (fluence 1012?1014 ions?cm?2). Structural study on sample cross-sections shows that two damage regions ? (1) nanostructured zone and (2) dislocation ? rich zone, which are typical for irradiations at normal incidence, appear also in samples irradiated under oblique angles. However in the latter case a more complex structure is formed that leads to stronger ion-…

Quadratic rational solvable groups

2012

Abstract A finite group G is quadratic rational if all its irreducible characters are either rational or quadratic. If G is a quadratic rational solvable group, we show that the prime divisors of | G | lie in { 2 , 3 , 5 , 7 , 13 } , and no prime can be removed from this list. More generally, if G is solvable and the field Q ( χ ) generated by the values of χ over Q satisfies | Q ( χ ) : Q | ⩽ k , for all χ ∈ Irr ( G ) , then the set of prime divisors of | G | is bounded in terms of k . Also, we prove that the degree of the field generated by the values of all characters of a semi-rational solvable group (see Chillag and Dolfi, 2010 [1] ) or a quadratic rational solvable group over Q is bou…

GDP clustering: A reappraisal

2012

Abstract This note explores clustering in cross country GDP per capita using recently developed model based clustering methods for panel data. Previous research characterizing the components of the overall distribution of output either use ad hoc methods, or methods which ignore/subvert the panel nature of the data. These new methods allow the characterization of the possible autoregressive relationship of output between time points. We show that traditional static clustering decade by decade gives mixed results regarding clustering over time, while the application of longitudinal mixtures presents three distinct clusters at all periods of time.

Reliable estimates in the anisotropic heat conduction problems

2014

Abstract The heat conduction problems for anisotropic bodies are studied taking into account the uncertainties in the material orientation. The best estimations of the upper and lower bounds of the considered energy dissipation functional are based on developing new approach consisting in solution of some optimization problems and finding the extremal internal material structures, which realize minimal and maximal dissipation. The motivation of this study comes from paper making processes, and more precisely, drying process, which consumes about 50% of the energy fed into the paper machine. The understanding of the effect of uncertainties in the process arises from structural properties of …

Diffusion front capturing schemes for a class of Fokker–Planck equations: Application to the relativistic heat equation

2010

In this research work we introduce and analyze an explicit conservative finite difference scheme to approximate the solution of initial-boundary value problems for a class of limited diffusion Fokker-Planck equations under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We show stability and positivity preserving property under a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy parabolic time step restriction. We focus on the relativistic heat equation as a model problem of the mentioned limited diffusion Fokker-Planck equations. We analyze its dynamics and observe the presence of a singular flux and an implicit combination of nonlinear effects that include anisotropic diffusion and hyperbolic transport. We present numeri…

A fast 3D BEM for anisotropic elasticity based on hierarchical matrices

2008

In this paper a fast solver for three-dimensional anisotropic elasticity BEM problems is developed. The technique is based on the use of hierarchical matrices for the representation of the collocation matrix and uses a preconditioned GMRES for the solution of the algebraic system of equations. The preconditioner is built exploiting the hierarchical arithmetic and taking full advantage of the hierarchical format. The application of hierarchical matrices to the BEM solution of anisotropic elasticity problems has been numerically demonstrated highlighting both accuracy and efficiency leading to almost linear computational complexity.

Hierarchical fast BEM for anisotropic time-harmonic 3-D elastodynamics

2012

The paper presents a fast boundary element method for anisotropic time-harmonic 3-D elastodynamic problems. The approach uses the hierarchical matrices format and the ACA algorithm for the collocation matrix setup and a preconditioned GMRES solver for the solution. The development of this approach for the anisotropic case presents peculiar aspects which deserve investigation and are studied in the paper leading to the employed computational strategy and its effective tuning. Numerical experiments are presented to assess the method accuracy, performances and numerical complexity. The method ensures adequate accuracy allowing remarkable reductions in computation time and memory storage.

Original strain energy density functions for modeling of anisotropic soft biological tissue

2017

This thesis has focused on the construction of strain energy densities for describing the non-linear behavior of anisotropic materials such as biological soft tissues (ligaments, tendons, arterial walls, etc.) or fiber-reinforced rubbers. The densities we have proposed have been developed with the mathematical theory of invariant polynomials, particularly the Noether theorem and the Reynolds operator. Our work involved two types of anisotropic materials, the first with a single fiber family and the second with a four-fiber family. The concept of polyconvexity has also been studied because it is well known that it plays an important role for ensuring the existence of solutions. In the case o…
