Lower bounds for eigenvalues of a quadratic form relative to a positive quadratic form

Abstract : A method is presented for the calculation of lower bounds to eigenvalues of operators that arise from variational problems for one quadratic form relative to a positive definite quadratic form. Eigenvalue problems of this kind occur, for example, in the theory of buckling of continuous linear elastic systems. The technique used is a modification of one introduced earlier, (1) sections II and IVB, for the determination of lower bounds to eigenvalues of semi-bounded self-adjoint operators. Finite elements with embedded interphases for strain localization in quasi-brittle materials

The paper presents a continuous-discontinuous numerical strategy for sim- ulating localized failure in structures made of quasi-brittle materials using finite elements. The strategy is based on observing acting stresses scenarios, when a diffuse degradation is followed by high deformation bands localizing in certain regions of the structure. The numerical strategy should encom- pass both situations in accordance with the material’s constitutive model. Free vibrations of anisotropic panels

A meshfree approach, called Displacement Boundary Method, for the analysis of in-plane and out-of-plane free vibrations of anisotropic plates is presented. The discretization process is based on the use of a modified variational principle and the static fundamental solutions of the problem operators. The stiffness and mass matrices are frequencyindependent, symmetric and positive definite and their computation requires boundary integrations of regular kernels only. Thus, the final resolving system can be solved with classical approaches by using standard numerical procedures. Numerical results are presented to show the accuracy and effectiveness of the method.

Isolation of the left atrial surface from cardiac multi-detector CT images based on marker controlled watershed segmentation

The delineation of left atrium (LA) and pulmonary veins (PVs) anatomy from high resolution images holds importance for atrial fibrillation (AF) investigation and treatment. In this study, a semiautomatic segmentation procedure for LA and PVs inner surface from contrast enhanced CT data was developed. The procedure consists of a three dimensional marker controlled watershed segmentation applied to the external morphological gradient, followed by variable threshold surface extraction from the original intensity image. Identification of Synaptic Integration Mode in CA3 Pyramidal Neuron Model

International audience; A morphologically realistic and anisotropic model of CA3 pyramidal neuron was developed to determine the synaptic integration modes the neuron is able to perform. Linearity and nonlinearity were identified in different synaptic locations with varying active mechanisms such as the presence of ionic channels in the dendritic arbor and the types of receptors in the synapse. Quantification of synaptic integration was performed using paired-pulse stimulation protocol and subthreshold input/output (sI/O) transformation. Transverse shear warping functions for anisotropic multilayered plates

In this work, transverse shear warping functions for an equivalent single layer plate model are formulated from a variational approach. The part of the strain energy which involves the shear phenomenon is expressed in function of the warping functions and their derivatives. The variational calculus leads to a differential system of equations which warping functions must verify. Solving this system requires the choice of values for the (global) shear strains and their derivatives. A particular choice, which is justified for cross-ply laminates, leads to excellent results. Dynamical analysis of anisotropic inflation

Inflaton coupling to a vector field via the $f^2(\phi)F_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}$ term is used in several contexts in the literature, such as to generate primordial magnetic fields, to produce statistically anisotropic curvature perturbation, to support anisotropic inflation and to circumvent the $\eta$-problem. Here, I perform dynamical analysis of such a system allowing for most general Bianchi I initial conditions. I also confirm the stability of attractor equilibrium points in phase-space directions that had not been investigated before.

MeV–GeV ion induced dislocation loops in LiF crystals

Abstract Formation of prismatic dislocation loops and evolution of dislocation structure in LiF crystals irradiated with swift 238U and 36S ions of specific energy 11 MeV/u at fluences up to 1013 ions cm−2 has been investigated using chemical etching and AFM. It has been shown that prismatic dislocations are formed in the stage of track overlapping above threshold fluences Φ ≈ 109 U cm−2 and Φ ≈ 1010 S cm−2. The diameter of dislocation loops reaches 600–1000 nm for 238U ions and 200 nm for 36S ions. Coating and functionalization of high density ion track structures by atomic layer deposition

In this study flexible TiO 2 coated porous Kapton membranes are presented having electron multiplication properties. 800 nm crossing pores were fabricated into 50  m thick Kapton membranes using ion track technology and chemical etching. Consecutively, 50 nm TiO 2 films were deposited i nto the pores of the Kapton membranes by atomic layer deposition using Ti( i OPr) 4 and water as precursors at 250 °C. Formation of dislocations in LiF irradiated with 3He and 4He ions

Influence of the irradiation with 13.5 MeV 3He and 5 MeV 4He ions on the micro-structure and mechanical properties of LiF single crystals was studied. The depth profiles of nanoindentation, dislocation mobility, selective chemical etching and photoluminescence served for the characterization of damage. Strong ion-induced increase of hardness and decrease in dislocation mobility at the stage of track overlapping due to accumulation of dislocations and other extended defects was observed.
