Iris haynei and I. atrofusca are two closely related narrow endemics distributed vicariously along an ecogeographical north-south gradient in Israel and the West Bank. To obtain baseline information of the taxonomic status, conservation and population history of these taxa, we investigated patterns of phenotypic variation and the partitioning of genetic variation within and among populations using dominant random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Multivariate (principal components analysis) and taxonomic distance analyses based on morphometric traits from eight populations revealed no unambiguous separation into two distinct groups. Affinities of European Upper Palaeolithic Homo sapiens and later human evolution

Abstract We investigate the evolutionary affinities of European Upper Palaeolithic populations, using cranial measurements and multivariate techniques. Results indicate that cranial morphology of these populations accords with long-term phyletic trends within Pleistocene hominids. The data indicate an interpretation of differential velocities of change, and results do not support the view that Neanderthals contributed to recent populations.

El seis de abril de 2002, más de un centenar de catedráticos europeos, princi- palmente del Reino Unido, publicaron en The Guardian un llamamiento para una moratoria de todos los vínculos académicos y culturales con Israel, en tanto el Gobierno Israelí no cumpla las resoluciones de Naciones Unidas y abra negociaciones serias de paz con la Autoridad Palestina. Un llamamiento similar tuvo lugar también en los Estados Unidos.
