The Albanians (the Arbëresh) constitute the largest linguistic ethnic “minority” in Sicily. The community is made up of around 20,000 people living in 5 towns, all of which are in the province of Palermo. The most important of these villages is Piana degli Albanesi, where the Bishop (whose Greek name is Eparca) of the Diocese (the Eparchìa) of the Albanians of Sicily has is seat. The cultural identity of the Albanians of Sicily is basically expressed by the Arbëresh language and the Byzantine rite. The contribution aims to frame the diasporic phenomenon of the 15th-16th centuries of the Balkan populations from areas roughly corresponding today to Albania and Greece, reading it according to a plurality of levels and intertwining that characterize the Mediterranean modern age history. Specifically, the paper summarizes the most recent reflections on the subject and focuses on the reasons that triggered the migration flows and on the historiographical narration over the centuries.

For the Italo-Albanian reality, the diatopic-diachronic relationship of dialect variation takes on different aspects compared to that experienced in the Italo-Romance reality. This is due to the fact that the linguistic-geographical dislocation (prior and subsequent to the diaspora) and the diachronic distribution of the various migratory stages, have produced historical and territorial discontinuity of the archipelagos and of the Arbëreshë islands variously distributed in the Italo-Romance continuum.
