About ten years ago the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily (ALS) adopted the dictionary-atlas tool. When the rich onomastic universe began to be investigated its use was also evaluated on three different oral corpora: one relating to the popular forms of the toponymic heritage (DAToS Dictionary-toponymic atlas of Sicily) one concerning the plural inventory of ethnic nicknames (DASES Dictionary-atlas of ethnic nicknames in Sicily) the latest afferent to the popular individual and family anthroponomastic heritage (DASS Dictionary-atlas of the nicknames of / in Sicily). The contribution provides the state of the art of the three projects and describes their methods objectives and dissemination tools.Settore L-FIL-LET/12 - Linguistica Italiana

2014

Matei Visniec (1956) is an author from Romania, who uses both French and Romanian expression in his plays. The coordinates of his dramatic fictional universe bring together the absurd, the symbolic, the fantastic and the conflicts in the city of men, sometimes with accurate historical and current references. Animals, present onstage in many different ways, are very common in his plays. They constitute a strange wildlife between animal and human, between the real and the fantastic.Their presence in this theatrical universe fits into their symbolic aspect, which defies the imagination by means of what is enigmatic and incomprehensible; but it also falls into their committed side to the extent…

The development of L2 Italian morphosyntax in adult learners with limited literacy

2020

Low literacy and schooling rates are a significant factor among adults in the recent migration towards Europe, including Italy. However, in Italy linguistic research has paid very little attention to the relationship between newcomers’ language learning processes and (low) schooling and literacy. This lack of attention to the role of home language(s) literacy – and, more in general, to the sociolinguistic variables characterising the condition of migration – is problematic at a theoretical level. As it assumes the role of literacy as the main research question, the investigation on the acquisition of morphosyntax by adult learners with limited literacy, which is described in the volume, rep…

Carotid artery intima-media thickness: normal and percentile values in the Italian population (camp study)

2011

AIMS: Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is one of the best non-invasive parameters for evaluating previous vascular lesions and could be used to identify a preclinical stage of the atherosclerotic process. The aim of our research was to develop an epidemiological study of the normal mean values of IMT of the common carotid artery, adjusted for age and sex, in the Italian population. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this multicenter study, a total of 1017 patients (596 males, mean age: 58.5 + 13.2 years) were enrolled at four different Italian centers. Inclusion criteria were the absence of cardiovascular risk factors or presence of not more than one. Patients underwent two-dimensional echo-color …

Assessing Future Expectations and the Two-Dimensional Model of Affect in an Italian Population

2017

Future-directed thinking has been described as part of two underlying systems that integrate dimensions of affect, motivational systems, orientation to the future, and future expectations, which are initiated at the cognitive, affective, biological, behavioral, and motivational levels. The main aim of the present study is to test the two underlying frameworks model and explore future expectations in a general Italian-speaking population (N=345). Therefore, the second aim of the present paper is to confirm the factorial structure of the Subjective Probability Task (SPT; MacLeod et al., 1996), a questionnaire designed to assess specific positive and negative orientations towards the future. R…

Italian cancer figures, report 2013: Multiple tumours

2013

This collaborative study, based on data collected by the network of Italian association of cancer registries (AIRTUM), provides updated estimates on the incidence risk of multiple primary cancer (MP). The objective is to highlight and quantify the bidirectional associations between different oncological diseases. The quantification of the excess or decreased risk of further cancers in cancer patients, in comparison with the general population, may contribute to understand the aetiology of cancer and to address clinical follow-up.Data herein presented were provided by AIRTUM population-based cancer registries, which cover nowadays 48% of the Italian population. This monograph utilizes the AI…

Lack of association between estrogen receptor 1 gene polymorphisms and multiple sclerosis in southern Italy in humans

2002

Estrogen receptor 1 gene polymorphisms (ESR1) have been found to be associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) in both Japanese and Finnish populations. We investigated the association between ESR1 polymorphisms (PvuII and XbaI) and MS in a study of 132 MS patients and 129 controls from the same geographic background (southern Italy). Allelic and genotypic frequencies were not different between MS patients and population controls for either the PvuII or XbaI polymorphism. This result suggests that the association between a given disease and a genomic characteristic must be confirmed by separate investigations in different populations. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.
