Palliative care quality indicators in Italy. What do we evaluate?
2012
Purpose In recent years, the number of palliative service providers has increased significantly. This expansion necessitates an evaluation in order to provide the basis for quality improvement of the care. Policymakers, managers of palliative care programs, and others committed to the improvement of end-of-life care need methods and criteria to measure and evaluate the care delivered. As quality measurement is expensive and difficult to undertake, it is fundamental that quality measures evaluate the right things. Quality evaluation in Italy is supported by health authorities who have developed some indicators of palliative care. The aims of this study were to give an overview of these indic…
Sarcopenia and appendicular muscle mass as predictors of impaired fasting glucose/type 2 diabetes in elderly women
2021
Elderly women exhibit a high risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but no definitive data exist about the possible role of postmenopausal increases in visceral adiposity, the loss of lean body mass, or decreases in the sum of the lean mass of arms and legs (appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM)). This retrospective, longitudinal study investigated whether body composition (bioelectrical impedance analysis) predicted the development of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or T2D in a cohort of 159 elderly women (age: 71 ± 5 years, follow-up: 94 months) from southern Italy (Clinical Nutrition and Geriatric Units of the “Mater Domini” University Hospital in Catanzaro, Calabria region, and the “P. Giacco…

How Family and Emotional Ties Are Used As Coercive Instruments by the Exploiters on the Romanian Feminine Migration. The Study Case of Italy
2016
After the Fall of the Communist Regime, Italy started to receive major flows of immigrant Romanian women, caused by the transformation of the economic and social structure in Romania (Diminescu, 2003; Sandu, 2006). Due to the Patriarchal family model in Italy, the majority of this women have come to substitute the emancipated Italian women in the sector of domestic work and care giving (Pitch, 2004). Before the entrance of Romania into the European Union, many women have had to recur to smuggling and trafficking networks in order to entry into the destination country, exposing themselves to exploitative conditions as well as vulnerable situations. Despite the fact that during the first migr…
Camera trapping the European wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) in Sicily (Southern Italy): preliminary results
2009
The wildcat is an elusive species that is threatened with extinction in many parts of its range. In Sicily it still lives in a wide range of habitats. During 2006, camera traps were used to investigate the distribution of the wildcat over a 660 ha wide area on the south-western slope of Mount Etna (NE Sicily). Twelve out of 18 trapping stations provided a total of 24 photographs. Nine different individuals were identified using morphological criteria. Our work confirms the suitability of camera trapping for monitoring elusive carnivores.
Education in a crisis. Italy within southern Europe: Trends and the way forward
2016
