Dealing with the Public Debt Burden. A system dynamics approach to implementing sustainable financial policies in the Italian State

2012

In the last decades in several mature democracies the problem of debt emerged as a violation of intergenerational equal treatment due to high expenditures concentration and dilution of costs by mean of debt creation. So far this issue has been analyzed from a statistical and a socio-economic perspective, which identified the high political interference as the main dysfunction of country debt management. There are no studies which frame the issue by focusing on State institutions as performance-oriented organizations, according to this perspective such organizations have to respect dynamically trade-off between development and the debt reduction through a mix of levers such as: funds acquisi…

Nascita, evoluzione e prospettive di due insediamenti rurali di colonizzazione: Borgo Carso e La Bazana

2020

In Italy and Spain, under the colonisation policies of the 20th century, different villages were built as a strategic effort to improve rural areas. Overtime such villages have been subject to external and internal drivers of change with direct and indirect effects on its socio-economic, cultural, physical and environmental context. In the face of such challenges and due to the need to adapt to new requirements, activities, and functions, the design ideas that initially steered the development of the villages suffered several shifts. Thus, existing villages of colonisation in Italy and Spain hold valuable information to achieve a better understanding of spatial transformations, expansion pr…

Exploring the tourism markets’ convergence hypothesis in Italy

2020

This article aims at investigating the tourism markets’ convergence hypothesis across Italy’s 20 major source markets. To reach our goal, we use monthly data of tourist arrivals and overnights over the period 2008–2018 and the time-varying factor model developed by Phillips and Sul (2007, 2009). Our findings suggest the absence of full (absolute) convergence, leading us to accept the hypothesis of club convergence. We show that the traditionally more important source markets have a tendency to persist, while Asian countries show heterogeneous behaviour. Furthermore, the relative decline in the contribution to total arrivals and overnights of several international source markets calls for a…

The History of Jobless Italy

2018

This article provides an overall look at the history of unemployment in Italy from unification up to the present day, including the changes in the many different economic, social and political aspects of the phenomenon. At the time of Italian unification, people's notions were still rather vague as to who the unemployed actually were. Between the end of the Nineteenth century and the First World War, for the first time, it became evident that responsibility needed to be taken for involuntary joblessness as a political and social problem. However, it was only after fascism and the tragedy of the Second World War that the entire Italian legal system was rebuilt around the principle of the rig…

Foreigners in Italy: economic living conditions and unmet medical needs

2015

Foreigners in Italy experience specific inequalities in health and in access to health care that overlap with existing geographical disparities. In this study we aim to compare the effects of living conditions on self-perceived unmet medical needs among foreigners living in Italy. In particular, we test several measures of living conditions, and assess whether these measures affect foreigners differently depending on their nationality. The data used for the analysis are from the Italian Special Survey of Income and Living Conditions carried out on households with foreigners in 2009.

Medium enthalpy geothermal systems in carbonate reservoirs, the Western Sicily example.

2013

The multidisciplinary and integrated review of existing data (mainly acquired during oil exploration), specifically reread for geothermal purposes, and the integration with new data acquired in particular key areas, such as the Mazara Del Vallo site in the southern part of western Sicily, allowed us to better understand this -regional scale- medium-enthalpy geothermal system (with measured temperatures up to 100 °C), to reconstruct the modalities and peculiarities of fluids circulation, and to evaluate the geothermal potentialities of western Sicily. We suggest that these findings could be taken as exemplificative of the behavior of low-to medium enthalpy geothermal systems hosted in carbon…

Of Capital and Power Italian Late-Colonial Policies in Eritrea at the Onset of the Federation with Ethiopia

2021

Scholars of African history have often inquired into the relationship between government and business in the making of North-South relations after decolonization. The neo-colonial thesis maintained that the metropolitan governments undertook overt and covert actions to preserve the dominant position of their own multinational corporations in the newly independent African nations. Historians of British Africa have partially revisited this thesis, suggesting a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between political and economic actors. This article seeks to test these arguments in relation to the Italian case, looking at the early process of decolonization in Eritrea. In 1952, the fo…

MEASURING THE CONSUMERS' LEVEL OF SATISFACTION FOR ONLINE FOOD DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

2020

Given this scientific framework, the aim of this work is to investigate the level of satisfaction of consumer in buying food by means of online grocery shopping channels during this grave COVID-19 pandemic, starting from the description of the main factors that have characterized the online spending behaviour. The analysis was carried out by collecting data deriving from an online questionnaire administrated to an Italian ‘snowball’ sample through social networks and emails, in the March-May 2020 time range. The questionnaire was first tested by experts in online purchasing channels and by scientific representatives. 249 were the final respondents that completed the survey. About 25% did no…
