2018

Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge and behavioral risks associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among the students of health professions at the University of Palermo divided into two age groups (18-22 years and 23-27 years). Materials and methods. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed. The questionnaire is structured in three parts in addition to an introduction to socio-demographic information. The first part investigates the quality of information provided by public institutions on the subject, the second part the knowledge of contraceptive methods used to reduce the risk of contagion and the third part the knowledge of STIs and HPV vaccinat…

Under-detection of delirium and impact of neurocognitive deficits on in-hospital mortality among acute geriatric and medical wards

2015

Abstract Background Delirium is a neuropsychiatric disorder, triggered by medical precipitants causes. Study aims were to describe the prevalence and impact on in-hospital mortality of delirium identified through ICD-9 codes as well as evidence of neurocognitive deficits demonstrated in a population of older patients admitted to acute medical wards. Methods This was a prospective cohort multicenter study of 2521 older patients enrolled in the “Registro Politerapie SIMI (REPOSI)” during the years 2010 and 2012. The diagnosis of delirium was obtained by ICD-9 codes. Cognitive function was evaluated with the Short Blessed Test (SBT) and single SBT items were used as measures of deficits in att…

Is there a lack of information on HPV vaccination given by health professionals to young women?

2013

Objective: The aim of this survey is to compare the main sources of information about vaccination against Human papillomavirus (HPV) of young women aged over-18 and under-18 years. Methods: A multicenter study was carried out in Italy through the administration of a questionnaire. Univariate analyses were conducted to evaluate possible differences between age groups and different locations (chi-square test and Fisher test where possible). Results: The sample consisted of 987 young women. The main sources of information about HPV vaccination are represented by magazines/books (23.1%) and TV (20.5%) for the over-18s, while for the under-18s the sources are general practitioners (22.6%) and pedi…

Study protocol for an online questionnaire survey on symptoms/signs, protective measures, level of awareness and perception regarding covid-19 outbre…

2020

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization have developed preparedness and prevention checklists for healthcare professionals regarding the containment of COVID-19. The aim of the present protocol is to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak among dentists in different countries where various prevalence of the epidemic has been reported. Several research groups around the world were contacted by the central management team. The online anonymous survey will be conducted on a convenience sample of dentists working both in national health systems and in private or public clinics. In each country/area, a high (~5–20%) proportion of dentists working th…

Study of the Association with -330T/G IL-2 in a Population of Centenarians from Centre and South Italy.

2005

Immune response in elderly is characterised by a progressive loss of the ability to cope environmental stressors with a characteristic remodelling of cytokine network. One of the data constantly reported in literature is the decrease of IL-2 production. An IL-2 central role in the reconstitution of T cell function in vitro is largely documented. Studies on a T → G polymorphism at - 330 nt of IL-2 gene promoter region have demonstrated that T lymphocytes from 330GG homozygous subjects are able to produce in vitro higher amount of IL-2, than -330TG heterozygous or -330TT homozygous subjects. As a genetic background conditioning the maintaining of an efficient immune response would exert posit…

Association between the HFE mutations and unsuccessful ageing: a study in Alzheimer's disease patients from Northern Italy

2003

Mutations in the class I-like Major Histocompatibility Complex gene HFE are associated with hereditary hemochromatosis (HH), a disorder caused by excessive iron uptake. Three common mutations have been found: C282Y, H63D, and S65C. Moreover, several studies have suggested that HFE mutations may be involved in several age-related chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and coronary heart disease, but apparently paradoxically also with longevity. In particular, in AD, patients carrying the H63D allele have been suggested to have a mean age at onset of 72 vs. 77 years for those who were homozygous for the wild-type allele. Thus, it seems that H63D mutations may anticipate sporadic AD…

Prevalence and clinical features of polycystic ovarian syndrome in adolescents with previous childhood growth hormone deficiency.

2016

AbstractGrowth hormone (GH) plays a role in the regulation of ovarian function but there are limited data in women with GH deficiency (GHD). Our aim was to evaluate the features of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women with previous GHD.Data of 22 adolescents previously GH-treated (group A) were compared with those of 22 women with classical PCOS (group B) and 20 controls (group C).: Group A showed higher testosterone (p=0.048) and prevalence of menstrual irregularities (p<0.001) than group C. Compared to the group B, group A showed lower diastolic blood pressure (p=0.004), degree of hirsutism (p=0.005), testosterone (p=0.003) and prevalence of polycsytic ovaries (POC) morphology (…
