Effect of observer experience in the differentiation between benign and malignant liver tumors after ultrasound contrast agent injection.

2009

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the observer level of experience on the diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging (CEUS) for differentiation between benign and malignant liver tumors. METHODS: From a computerized search, we retrospectively identified 286 biopsy-proven liver tumors (105 hepatocellular carcinomas, 48 metastases, 7 intra-hepatic cholangiocarcinomas, 33 liver hemangiomas, and 93 nonhemangiomatous benign lesions) in 235 patients (140 male and 95 female; mean age +/- SD, 56 +/- 11 years) who underwent CEUS after sulfur hexafluoride-filled microbubble injection. The digital cine clips recorded during the arterial (10-35 seconds…

Wheeze and asthma in children: associations with body mass index, sports, television viewing, and diet.

2008

Obesity, physical activity, and dietary habits are distinct but strongly interrelated lifestyle factors that may be relevant to the prevalence of wheeze and asthma in children. Our goal was to analyze the relationship of body mass index (BMI), regular sports participation, TV viewing, and diet with current wheezing and asthma. We investigated 20,016 children, aged 6-7 years, who were enrolled in a population-based study. Parents completed standardized questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), while adjusting for several confounders and simultaneously considering BMI, regular sports activity, TV viewing and selected dietary …

Short-Term Effects of Air Pollution on Cardiovascular Hospitalizations in the Pisan Longitudinal Study

2021

Air pollution effects on cardiovascular hospitalizations in small urban/suburban areas have been scantly investigated. Such effects were assessed among the participants in the analytical epidemiological survey carried out in Pisa and Cascina, Tuscany, Italy (2009–2011). Cardiovascular hospitalizations from 1585 subjects were followed up (2011–2015). Daily mean pollutant concentrations were estimated through random forests at 1 km (particulate matter: PM10, 2011–2015

Patterns of infections in older patients acutely admitted to medical wards: data from the REPOSI register

2019

In older adults infections are among the leading causes of emergency department visits, hospitalization, morbidity and mortality [1–3]. Infections also occur as adverse events during hospitalization, as highlighted by the large use of antibiotics in this setting, resulting in an increase of hospitalization length and mortality rate [4–6]. There is a paucity of studies, especially in European countries, that did offer a general pattern on all the types of infections occurring in acutely hospitalized older patients, being the literature mainly focused on single type of infections (i.e. pneumonia and urinary tract infections). To fill this gap of knowledge, we chose to observe and describe the…

Coeliac disease: Oral ulcer prevalence, assessment of risk and association with gluten-free diet in children.

2008

Aims. Oral mucosal lesions may be markers of chronic gastrointestinal disorders, such as those causing malabsorption. Our objectives were to assess the prevalence of recurrent oral aphthous-like ulcers in coeliac disease patients living in the Mediterranean area, and to evaluate the impact of a gluten-free diet. Methods. A test group of 269 patients (age range 3-17 years) with coeliac disease confirmed both serologically and histologically was compared with a control group of 575 otherwise clinically healthy subjects for the presence, or a positive history of aphthous-like ulcers. Coeliac disease patients with aphthous-like ulcers were re-evaluated 1-year after starting a gluten-free diet. …

Safety of Reconstructive Microsurgery in the Elderly Population: a Multicentric Prospective Study

2021

Background: Safety of reconstructive microsurgery in elderly patients is still a topic of debate, because no conclusive evidence exists that provides indications and risk evaluation in elderly patients. The purpose of this study, which the Italian Society for Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery (SICPRE) has promoted, is to evaluate the safety and the complication risk of elective reconstructive microsurgery in elderly patients as well as to identify patient- or procedure-related risk factors. The secondary aim is to evaluate the predictive role for complications of the Geriatric 8 score (G8). Methods: A total of 194 consecutive patients from 18 centers, aged 65 or older, who rece…

Association between plasma lipid levels and migraine in subjects agedor =50 years: preliminary data from the Zabùt Aging Project.

2008

We evaluated the association between lipid levels and migraine using cross-sectional, population-based data of 1809 subjects aged >= 50 years; 151 subjects with migraine and 1658 nonmigraineurs were included. Diagnosis of migraine was carried out using the criteria of the International Headache Society. The following plasma lipids were collected: total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG). Only TC (p= 220 mg/dl) was significantly associated with migraine (OR [95% CI]=1.6 [1.1-2.3]); this association increased in elderly males with migraine (OR [95% CI]=3.8 [1.4-9.9]). According to our results, TC p…

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis and descending necrotizing mediastinitis in a patient affected by neglected peritonsillar abscess: a case of medical n…

2007

Abstract We report a case of fatal cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) and descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) due to primary peritonsillar abscess in 60-year-old male patient with no history or evidence of immunocompromising disorders. The patient was treated with antibiotic and corticosteroid drugs but he developed mediastinitis and septic shock and died of multiple organ failure six days later from recovery in hospital. After a clinical, diagnostic and therapeutical consideration of the cervical necrotizing fasciitis and some related risks of a delayed diagnosis and treatment, the authors analysed the clinical history of the patient and of the medical conduct pointing out profess…

Association of total serum cholesterol with functional outcome following home care rehabilitation in Italian patients with stroke.

2012

Abstract Background Stroke is a disabling disease. In elderly populations, stroke is the third leading cause of death and the primary cause of reduction in or loss of functional ability and personal autonomy. Possible associations between levels of total serum cholesterol (TC) and both incidence of stroke and functional outcomes after rehabilitation are still under study. Objective To detect positive and negative prognostic factors associated with functional outcomes in first-time stroke patients admitted to an integrated home care rehabilitative program. Methods This study enrolled 141 patients with a first-time stroke who were admitted to a home care rehabilitation program. Primary outcom…
