Primary Radical Prostatectomy or Ablative Radiotherapy as Protective Factors for Patients With mCRPC Treated With Radium-223 Dichloride: An Italian M…

2020

Abstract Background We investigated, in a real-life setting, the prognostic relevance of previous primary treatment (radical prostatectomy [RP] or external beam radiotherapy [EBRT]) on overall survival for patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with radium-223 (223Ra). Materials and Methods In the present multicenter retrospective study, we enrolled 275 consecutive patients. The demographic and clinical data and mCRPC characteristics were recorded and evaluated at baseline and at the end of treatment or progression. 223Ra was administered according to the current label authorization until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. We divided the who…

Revaluation of the clinical and metabolic behavior of children with isolated growth hormone deficiency during GH treatment according to newly propose…

2015

Purpose To evaluate the clinical and metabolic behavior of children with isolated growth hormone (GH)-deficiency (GHD), grouped according to the new AIFA criteria for the appropriateness of use and reimbursement of GH treatment in children. Methods The clinical and metabolic data of 310 prepubertal children (220 M, 90 F; mean age 10.8 years) grouped, according to new AIFA note 39, into group A (No 181 with a peak of GH 10 µg/L) were retrospectively analyzed. Group A and B, diagnosed as having GHD, were treated with GH for at least 24 months, while group C was analyzed only at baseline. Results At baseline, group A showed higher waist circumference than B (p=0.031) and C (p=0.041), while no …

Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Incidence of Diabetes in Elderly People: The PRO.V.A. Study

2014

Context: Increasing research has shown that low levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (25OHD) predict the onset of diabetes, but no research is available on this issue in elderly people. Objective: Our objective was to examine whether low serum levels of 25OHD are associated with a higher risk of incident type 2 diabetes over a lengthy follow-up in a representative group of elderly people. Design and Setting: This was a population-based cohort study as part of the Progetto Veneto Anziani (Pro.V.A.) Study over a follow-up of 4.4 years in the general community. Participants: Participants included 2227 participants (1728 with follow-up visits and 499 died during the follow-up) over 65 years of ag…

Clinical course of isolated distal deep vein thrombosis in patients with active cancer: a multicenter cohort study

2017

Essentials Isolated distal deep vein thrombosis (IDDVT) is frequently associated with cancer. No study has specifically evaluated the long-term clinical course of cancer-associated IDDVT. Patients with cancer-associated IDDVT are at very high risk of symptomatic recurrence and death. We observed low rates of major bleeding during anticoagulation. SummaryBackground Although isolated distal deep vein thrombosis (IDDVT) is frequently associated with cancer, no study has specifically evaluated the long-term clinical course of IDDVT in this setting. Aim To provide data on the rate of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE), major bleeding events and death in IDDVT patients with active cancer. Pat…

Associations of greenness, greyness and air pollution exposure with children's health: a cross-sectional study in Southern Italy

2018

Background Due to the complex interplay among different urban-related exposures, a comprehensive approach is advisable to estimate the health effects. We simultaneously assessed the effect of “green”, “grey” and air pollution exposure on respiratory/allergic conditions and general symptoms in schoolchildren. Methods This study involved 219 schoolchildren (8–10 years) of the Municipality of Palermo, Italy. Data were collected through questionnaires self-administered by parents and children. Exposures to greenness and greyness at the home addresses were measured using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), residential surrounding greyness (RSG) and the CORINE land-cover classes (C…

Orthostatic changes in blood pressure and mortality in the elderly: The Pro.V.A study

2015

BACKGROUND An extensive, albeit contrasting literature has suggested a possible role for orthostatic hypotension as a risk factor for cardiovascular (CVD) and non-CVD mortality, while no data are available for orthostatic hypertension. We investigated whether orthostatic changes in blood pressure (BP) were associated with any increased risk of all-cause, CVD or non-CVD mortality in a group of elderly people. METHODS Two thousand seven hundred and eighty six community-dwelling older participants were followed for 4.4 years. Participants were grouped according to whether they had a drop ≤20mm Hg in systolic, or ≤10mm Hg in diastolic BP (orthostatic hypotension), an increase in mean orthostati…

Unusual attempted suicide or covered attempted homicide? A neck stabbing case report and review of literature.

2020

A medico-legal consult is frequently required in a clinical context in order to assess the eventual compatibility of specific wounds with a self- or hetero-infliction. Accordingly, the case of a 52-year-old man with a single, penetrating stab wound of the neck, reported as self-inflicted, is here presented. The forensic aspects, taken into account in order to determine the self- or hetero-infliction nature of the wound, are further discussed and compared to cases described in the literature.

Risk factors for contrast induced nephropathy: A study among Italian patients

2012

This study aimed to make a profile of patients at highest risk of developing contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) in order to take appropriate prevention measures. 591 patients undergoing coronary procedures were divided into two groups: patients with (CIN-group) and without (no-CIN) an increase in creatinine level equal or more than 25% from baseline values within 24-48 h after the coronary procedure. All patients underwent an accurate anamnesis, objective exam, hematochemical measurements, and diagnostic exams. The results of this study while confirming that, average age (p = 0.01), diabetes mellitus (p < 0.0001), base line renal insufficiency (p = 0.0001), diuretic therapy (p = 0.002), hig…

New insights in respiratory impedance in young children after repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia: a cross-sectional study

2019

Abstract Lung function impairment is common in Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH) survivors. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in children who underwent CDH surgical repair, mid and long-term consequences on respiratory impedance, investigating the impact of CDH on both resistance and reactance parameters, as well as bronchodilator response. Forced Oscillation Technique (FOT) parameters were collected from 12 patients (2–11 years). Resistance and reactance values at 8 Hz (Rrs8, Xrs8) and the area under the reactance curve (AX) were measured pre and post-salbutamol. Quantitative variables were compared using Mann-Whitney U test. Differences of categorical variables were evaluated usi…

2006

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience. Carretto E, Dall'Igna P, Alaggio R, Siracusa F, Granata C, Ferrari A, Cecchetto G. Source Division of Paediatric Surgery, Department of Paediatrics, University of Padua, Padua, Italy. Abstract BACKGROUND: Fibrous hamartoma (FH) of infancy is a benign mesenchymal tumor, occurring as a superficial mass. Complete excision is curative. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical features and treatment results of 18 children with FH are described. RESULTS: Local excision was the most common procedure. Surgery was radical in 10 patients, with microscopic residual disease in 6; all of them are alive with no evidence of disease 2 to 4…
