The Mediterranean, or Where Africa Does (Not) Meet Italy: Andrea Segre's A Sud di Lampedusa (2006)
2013
The essay studies the crossing (or "burning") of the hundred thousand Africans who have traversed the Mediterranean in the past decades to look for better life conditions in Europe, through an analysis of Andrea Segre's documentaries, in particular South of Lampedusa (2006).
Posidonia oceanica as a Historical Monitor Device of Lead Concentration in Marine Environment
2005
We show that Posidonia oceanica is able to reliably monitor the variability of environmental lead (Pb). We analyze lead concentration measured in the scales and rhizomes of Posidonia oceanica collected in seven sites along the coasts of the Sicily island and subsequently fractioned them according to a lepidochronological analysis. We measure lead concentration in Posidonia oceanica tissues by using the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry technique. We compare the measured lead concentration with the estimated lead emission in air due to the gasoline sold and used for combustion in car engines in Sicily. By computation of the Pearson cross-correlation coefficient, we show that lead con…
Nuove stazioni italiane di Tortula freibergii
2010
Two new localities of Tortula freibergii Dix. & Loeske, a moss threatened in Europe, are reported. They are localized in North-western Sicily, one inside Natural Reserve of “Bosco della Ficuzza, Rocca Busambra, Bosco del Cappelliere e Gorgo del Drago” and the other near to the Archaeological area of Segesta. Both populations live on inland sections of waterways.
Next generation diagnostic algorithm in non-small cell lung cancer predictive molecular pathology: The KWAY Italian multicenter cost evaluation study
2022
Abstract Aims The KWAY project aims to investigate the economic sustainability of the up-front NGS technologies adoption in the analysis of clinically relevant molecular alterations in NSCLC patients. Methods The diagnostic workflow and the related sustained costs of five Italian referral centers were assessed in four different evolving scenarios were analyzed. For each scenario, two alternative testing strategies were evaluated: the Maximized Standard strategy and the Maximized NGS strategy. Results For each center, the robustness of obtained results was verified through a deterministic sensitivity analysis, observing the variation of total costs based on a variation of ±20 % of the input …
Survey of neonatal respiratory care and surfactant administration in very preterm infants in the Italian neonatal network
2013
INTRODUCTION: Variation of respiratory care is described between centers around the world. The Italian Neonatal Network (INN), as a national group of the Vermont-Oxford Network (VON) allows to perform a wide analysis of respiratory care in very low birth weight infants. METHODS: We analyzed the dataset of infants enrolled in the INN in 2009 and 2010 and, for surfactant administration only, from 2006 to 2010 from 83 participating centers. All definitions are those of the (VON). A questionnaire analysis was also performed with a questionnaire on centers practices. RESULTS: We report data for 8297 infants. Data on ventilator practices and outcomes are outlined. Variation for both practices and…
Primatology in the Italian universities: from the colonial experience to the end of the XX century. In: Veracini, C. Casanova, C. Scalfari F Eds, His…
2019
Book's Abstract. Non–human primates have been perceived and classified with different approaches according to different cultural and philosophical traditions throughout the centuries. This book contains contributions that illustrate various aspects of the development of non-human primate natural history, starting from the ancient Greek world, through the Renaissance and European expansion, to the rise of Darwinism and finally to the work of Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese scholars of the 20th and 21th centuries, concluding with an original work regarding the role of images in primate taxonomy and conservation.
Damage Indices and Photogrammetry for Decay Assessment of Stone-Built Cultural Heritage: The Case Study of the San Domenico Church Main Entrance Port…
2020
In recent decades, increasing attention is being paid to the multidisciplinary approach that allows the performance of both a preventive conservation and a more invasive restoration action. In this context, the present study aims to acquire information and data from field surveys undertaken in San Domenico Church, Southern Calabria, in order to provide a tool for the recording and the inventory of damage and decay phenomena, and assess their causes and scale. The subsequent calculation of damage indices also provided useful information in order to allow the prioritization of conservation and preservation responses.
Credit Risk and Simulated Spreads Risk Adjusted for Italian Regions.
2009
We analyse the idiosyncratic and systematic elements influencing Italian firms’ probability of default (PD) and examine the relationship between credit risk and borrowing conditions at a regional level. This paper, using regression analysis, examines the causal relationship between PD of a representative sample of Italian firms, together with accounting variables at firm level and macroeconomic data. The underlying hypothesis examines if the riskiness of Italian firms is influenced exclusively by their specific characteristics or, more generally, depends also on the spatial environment where they operate. According to the literature, the interregional differentials in the cost of money depe…
No evidence of ATP1A2 involvement in 12 multiplex Italian families with benign familial infantile seizures
2005
A missense mutation in the gene encoding the alpha(2) Subunit of the Na+,K+ ATPase pump (ATP1A2) was found in a family with both familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) and Benign Familial Infantile Seizures (BFIC). As it is still unclear whether ATP1A2 is responsible for pure BFIC syndromes, we checked mutations of the ATP1A2 gene in probands of 12 Italian multiplex families with pure BFIC, who were negative for mutations in the SCN2A gene. We screened the ATP1A2 gene by denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (D-HPLC) and direct sequencing of DNA fragments showing an aberrant elution pattern. We found one exonic variant and five intronic variants, none leading to significant amino ac…
Italian familial defective apolipoprotein B patients share a unique haplotype with other Caucasian patients.
2001
Familial defective apolipoprotein (apo) B-100 together with familial hypercholesterolemia are the two common genetic conditions that cause hypercholesterolemia. Familial defective apolipoprotein B-100 is due to mutations around codon 3500 of the apo B gene. The most-characterized mutation is a G>A transition at nucleotide 10,708 that results in the substitution of arginine by glutamine at codon 3500 (Apo B Arg3500Gln). Two other mutations are caused by a C>T transition, one at nucleotide 10,800 (Apo B Arg3531Cys) and the other at nucleotide 10,707 (apo B Arg3500Trp). In the present study we describe three new Italian cases of familial defective apolipoprotein B-100 (Apo B Arg3500Gln), one f…
