Comunicare il design italiano, inteso come prodotto Made in Italy, implica una singolare e duplice attività progettuale, ovvero quella che conduce attraverso le varie fasi sequenziali del design di comunicazione, alla realizzazione di un artefatto comunicativo nel tentativo ultimo di dare un nome, un volto, una voce, un sistema di segni riconoscibili a un artefatto di product design. Southern Italy – the “Italian Mezzogiorno” – is recognised as one of the most controversial case for regional development in the European Union (Leonardi, 2005; Piattoni and Polverari, 2016). The article is an introduction to a special issue entitled "A spotlight on Italian cities: urban change, governance and planning", which reflects different ways urban questions can arise in the Italian cities and the many directions can be given to urban policy under the impulse of municipalities and local stakeholders.

Il contributo riporta gli esiti del workshop internazionale di progettazione urbana "PMO | Re-verse. Hyper-cycling Costa Sud", organizzato nell'ambito del PRIN "Re-cycle Italy. Nuovi cicli di vita per architetture e infrastrutture della città e del paesaggio", che si è tenuto a Palermo dal 9 al 13 settembre 2013. Nello specifico, l'articolo descrive le elaborazioni del gruppo di studenti e professionisti - da me seguito in qualità di tutor - che hanno sperimentato un processo di rigenerazione della costa sud di Palermo adottando la tattica progettuale dell'agopuntura urbana, arricchendola di considerazioni originali sulla ciclicità delle possibili funzioni costiere.

The "Fossa della Garofala" in Palermo: a geological site rich in cultural heritage

The Fossa della Garofala is a short, narrow valley, enclosed by sub-vertical banks, which was carved out by the Kemonia creek on the calcarenitic table that makes up the bedrock of the Plain of Palermo. It forms the outermost hem of the Conca d’Oro landscape where, set in an urban area, geologic and geomorphologic features of value join historical cultural values dating from the Punic period to the XIX century. This combination places the entire area in one of the most significant, albeit little known, pages of history: the history of traditional suburban landscape.
