Vulnerability to Forced Labour and Trafficking: The case of Romanian women in the agricultural sector in Sicily
2015
This paper focuses on labour and sexual exploitation faced by Romanian female workers employed in the agricultural sector in Ragusa, Sicily, Italy. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in 2013 and 2014 with Romanian female farm workers in Ragusa, the paper identifies factors that contribute towards their vulnerability to exploitation. By paying specific attention to the experiences of women who are mothers with dependent children, we look at structural factors that increase their vulnerability and consider how this vulnerability ‘forces’ women into situations whereby they effectively accept and/or submit to abuse. We also highlight how European Union (EU) citizenship does not automatically protec…
The beginning of the Neolithic in Southern Italy and Sicily
2018
Abstract The process of Neolithization of Southern Italy and Sicily covers about 500 years (6200–5700 cal BC) and involves two cultural horizons: Archaic Impressed Ware or “Impresse Arcaiche” and Advanced Impressed Ware or “Impresse Evolute”. In Southern Italy the Neolithic peopling from the East is characterized by a “package” of plenty domesticated plants and livestock; in Sicily the adoption of the new economical system is apparently more slow and with no evidences of ruptures between the Mesolithic groups and first farmers. In this paper we present the chronological and cultural framework of the sixth millennium BC within the area of investigation, with an up-to-date bibliography about …
Ancient Artistic Motifs on Italian Memorials from the Unity to the Aftermath of World War I
2022
In the decades subsequent to the unification of the Kingdom of Italy, achieved in 1861 with the proclamation of Vittorio Emanuele II as the king of the new State, the Italian peninsula became covered with many commemorative monuments. These were devoted, first of all, to honour the men who played a leading role in the heroic deeds of the Risorgimento but also to remember the places where the major historical events occurred. Afterwards as well, the Italian State went on erecting memorials, in order to celebrate other facts and casualties, as it happened on the occasion of the unsuccessful colonial attempts in the African land and then, above all, after the World War I. Many of these commemo…
2021
After Canova’s death (1822), Italian contemporary art, especially painting, suffered from the widespread topos that Italy as “terre des morts” had frozen in historical self-reflection and therefore did not meet the demands of modern “romantic” art. One of the few internationally recognized exceptions was Francesco Hayez (1791–1882), whose history painting virtuosically combined modern literary subjects with elements derived from the Venetian tradition, such as the gestures of Canova and the colorfulness of Venetian Quattro and Cinquecento painting. His images, which are relevant from a historical, literary but also political point of view, have achieved great success at the regular exhibiti…

2021
The transformation of Southern landscape after the construction of new infrastructures is a crucial theme in most techno-films released during the Italian economic miracle. Here, the traditional landscape is integrated with elements formerly unknown, giving birth to an original hybrid of technics and nature. This paper analyses the images of this rising “techno-landscape” by questioning the strategies that represent it as a form, as a point of view, and as an experience, thus making it a distinctive element of Italian modernity.
