Ground instability in the old town of Agrigento (Italy) depicted by on-site investigations and Persistent Scatterers data

We combine on-site investigations with the interpretation of satellite Persistent Scatterers (PS) to analyse ground instability in the historic town of Agrigento, Italy. Geological and geomorphologic surveys, together with geostructural and kinematic analyses, depict the deformational patterns of the northwestern sector of the town, previously documented by extensive literature available for the neighbouring Valley of the Temples. The geological and geomorphologic maps are reconstructed by combining bibliographic studies, field surveys and aerial stereo-interpretation. We present quantitative data on calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy in the section of Montalbano Jonico (Southern Italy). This is one of the candidate Global Statotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the Middle Pleistocene. The first common occurrence (FCO) and last common occurrence (LCO) of Reticulofenestra asanoi are well detectable in the section and are here proposed as additional events for improving biostratigraphic resolution in the interval corresponding to the transition between the small Gephyrocapsa Zone and Pseudoemiliania lacunosa Zone. A reappraisal of the purported gastric pellet with Pterosaurian bones from the Upper Triassic of Italy

A small accumulation of bones from the Norian (Upper Triassic) of the Seazza Brook Valley (Carnic Prealps, Northern Italy) was originally (1989) identified as a gastric pellet made of pterosaur skeletal elements. The specimen has been reported in literature as one of the very few cases of gastric ejecta containing pterosaur bones since then. However, the detailed analysis of the bones preserved in the pellet, their study by X-ray microCT, and the comparison with those of basal pterosaurs do not support a referral to the Pterosauria. Following two consecutive years of West Nile virus (WNV) circulation in Italy, new foci of infection were observed in August 2010 in Sicily and Molise in southern and central Italy, respectively. The aim of this study was to compare different possible approaches - data mining, geostatistic, deterministic pedology - to assess the frequency of WRB Reference Soil Groups (RSG) in the major Italian soil regions.
