Cancers in Patients with von Willebrand Disease: A Survey from the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres

2015

Besides its essential role in hemostasis, there is growing evidence that von Willebrand factor (VWF) has an additional antitumor effect. To elucidate the clinical significance of this biological activity we conducted a retrospective study on cancers among Italian patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD) on behalf of the Italian Association of Haemophilia Centres (AICE). A questionnaire to collect demographic, clinical, and treatment data of VWD patients with cancer was sent to all the 54 Italian Haemophilia Treatment Centres (HTCs) members of AICE. Overall, 18 HTCs (33%) provided information on 92 VWD patients (61 alive and 31 deceased) with 106 cancers collected during the period 1981 to…

Possible link between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and oral lichen planus: a novel association found

2013

Objectives: Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as lichen planus has been associated to a number of disorders, generally of auto-immune origin. A novel possible association between oral lichen planus (OLP) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is here proposed on the basis of a cross-sectional survey. Materials and methods: One hundred and five unrelated OLP patients were considered. Diagnosis of HT was based on positive serum anti-TPO, anti-Tg, TSH levels and the typical ultrasound pattern of the thyroid gland. Results: In the present survey, the prevalence of HT in the OLP group was 14. 3 % whereas the prevalence of HT-related hypothyroidism in the general population was reported to be equal to 1 …

The relapse rate of multiple sclerosis changes during pregnancy: a cohort study

2004

Objective – To evaluate the influence of pregnancy and puerperium on the relapse rate of multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods – We determined retrospectively the yearly mean relapse rate (MRR) during pregnancies occurring in the course of relapsing–remitting MS. We compared the MRR of pregnancy-time with that of non-pregnancy time by paired t-test. Relative risk (RR) of relapses during the pregnancy-time was also compared with that of non-pregnancy time by χ2 analysis and 95% confidence intervals. Results – From a population of 351 women affected by clinically definite MS, only 70 reported pregnancies during their relapsing–remitting phase of MS for a total of 98 pregnancies. Both MRR (P = 0.00…

Temporal Trend in the Frequency of Ectopic Pregnancies in Lombardy, Italy

2012

Background: In recent years, epidemiological data showed that the incidence of ectopic pregnancies (EP) is decreasing, but few data are available on the time trend in Southern European populations. Methods: Using data from the Lombardy Region Database, we calculated and standardized the EP rates/10,000 resident women and the ratios/1,000 pregnancies. Results: Data regarding 1,777,011 pregnancies and 17,028 cases of EP were recorded among women resident in Lombardy between 1996 and 2010, aged 15-50 years old. The age-adjusted EP rates increased from 4.4 in 1996 to 5.8 in 2010. Th…

Comparison of the rates of joint arthroplasty in patients with severe factor VIII and IX deficiency: an index of different clinical severity of the 2…

2009

AbstractData from the Italian Hemophilia Centres were collected to perform a retrospective survey of joint arthroplasty in patients with severe hemophilia. Twenty-nine of 49 hemophilia centers reported that 328 of the 347 operations were carried out in 253 patients with severe hemophilia A (HA) and 19 in 15 patients with severe hemophilia B (HB). When results were normalized to the whole Italian hemophilia population (1770 severe HA and 319 severe HB), patients with HA had a 3-fold higher risk of undergoing joint arthroplasty (odds ratio [OR], 3.38; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.97-5.77; P < .001). These results were confirmed after adjustment for age, HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and…

Biliary sludge and gallstones in pregnancy: Incidence, risk factors, and natural history

1993

To evaluate the incidence and symptoms of and risk factors for biliary sludge and gallstones during pregnancy and to assess the natural history of these conditions in the first year after delivery.Cohort study.A total of 272 pregnant women recruited in the first trimester.Biliary sludge and gallstones were diagnosed using ultrasonography, both during pregnancy and after delivery. Predictors of the presence or disappearance of sludge and stones were examined.Overall, from the first trimester of pregnancy until the immediate postpartum period, 67 women were newly diagnosed with biliary sludge, and 6 women were newly diagnosed with gallstones. The respective incidence rates were 31% (95% Cl, 2…

Temporal trends and determinants of peripartum hysterectomy in Lombardy, Northern Italy, 1996-2010.

2013

Purpose: To analyze the temporal trends of peripartum hysterectomy (PH) in the period 1996-2010 in Lombardy, Italy. Methods: Using data from the Regional Database, PH ratios/1,000 deliveries were calculated from 1996 to 2010, in strata of age and mode of delivery among women resident in Lombardy, Italy. PH cases were identified searching the database for the ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for subtotal and total hysterectomy. PH ratios/1,000 deliveries in strata of age, mode of delivery and calendar year were computed. Poisson's regression analysis was used to test trend over time. Results: A total of 905 PH and 1,289,163 deliveries were recorded between 1996 and 2010. The overall PH ratio was 0.70/…

Discontinuation of teriflunomide and dimethyl fumarate in a large Italian multicentre population: a 24-month real-world experience

2019

Teriflunomide (TRF) and Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) are licensed drugs for relapsing-remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS). We aimed to compare the rate and the time to discontinuation among persons with RRMS (pwRRMS), newly treated with TRF and DMF. A retrospective study on prospectively collected data was performed in nine tertiary MS centers, in Italy. The 24-month discontinuation rate in the two cohorts was the primary study outcome. We also assessed the time to discontinuation and reasons of therapy withdrawn. Discontinuation of TRF and DMF was defined as a gap of treatment ≥ 60 days. A cohort of 903 pwRRMS (316 on TRF and 587 on DMF) was analyzed. During 24 months of follow-up, pwRRMS on TR…

Uterine fibroids risk and history of selected medical conditions linked with female hormones

2004

To understand the role of several medical conditions on the risk of uterine fibroids, we analysed the findings of a large case-control study. Cases were 843 women aged 54 or less (median age 43 years, range 21-54) with histologically confirmed uterine fibroids, whose clinical diagnosis dated back no more than 2 years. Indications for surgery were recurrent menorrhagia or ultrasound evidence of fibroids larger than 10 cm in diameter. Controls were 1557 women aged 54 years or less of comparable quinquennia of age (median age 43 years, range 21-54) who had not undergone hysterectomy and were admitted for acute, non-gynecologic, non-hormonal, non-neoplastic conditions to a network of hospitals …

Selected food intake and risk of endometriosis.

2004

Background: To offer data on the relationship between diet and risk of pelvic endometriosis, we analysed data collected in the framework of two case-control studies. Methods: Data from two case-control studies conducted in Northern Italy between 1984 and 1999 were combined. Cases were 504 women aged < 65 years (median age 33 years, range 20-65) with a laparoscopically confirmed diagnosis of endometriosis, admitted to a network of obstetrics and gynaecology departments in Milan, Brescia and Pavia. Controls were 504 women (median age 34 years, range 20-61) admitted for acute non-gynaecological, non-hormonal, non-neoplastic conditions. Results: Compared to women in the lowest tertile of intake…
