The article discusses the methodology and the preliminary results of the research project entitled “Latvian language in Monolingual and Bilingual Acquisition: tools, theories and applications” (LAMBA). The project involves 25 researchers – linguists, educators, psychologists – from five institutions in Latvia and Norway, and focuses on phonological, lexical and morphosyntactic acquisition of Latvian as a native language in monolingual and bilingual settings. This study is based on an inventory of iron knives dated from the 8th to the 5th centuries BC and discovered in funerary and settlement sites in the South-West of France. The corpus consists of 608 artefacts. We established a typology allowing us to present a chronological and spatial distribution of each type. We then tried to determine the functions of the knives according to their type and their length. For those discovered in graves other objects in the grave assemblage were used as an additional criterion. When the funerary context was very clearly defined, we tried to determine the function, in the grave itself, of the knives.

Fast prototyping of parallel image processing applications using functional skeletons

We present SKiPPER, a software dedicated to the fast prototyping of vision algorithms on MIMD/DM platforms. This software is based upon the concept of algorithmic skeletons, i.e. higher order program constructs encapsulating recurring forms of parallel computations and hiding their low-level implementation details. Examples of such skeletons in low- to mid-level image processing include such as geometric decompositions, data or task farming. Each skeleton is given an architecture-independant functional (but executable) specification, a portable implementation as a process template and an analytic performance model. We used terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for (i) accurate volume estimations of dislocated boulders moved by high-energy impacts and for (ii) monitoring of annual coastal changes. In this contribution, we present three selected sites in Western Greece that were surveyed during a time span of four years (2008-2011). The Riegl LMS-Z420i laser scanner was used in combination with a precise DGPS system (Topcon HiPer Pro). Each scan position and a further target were recorded for georeferencing and merging of the point clouds. Before a test can be used in the target population, it is necessary to demonstrate that there is measurement equivalence. One way to do this is by studying differential item functioning. Objective: In this study, we used the Mantel-Haenszel procedure and logistic regression to analyze DIF in the Spanish version of the Verbal Selective Reminding Test between Spaniards, Mexicans and Hispanics in the United States. Underestimation of reliability is discussed from the viewpoint of deflation in estimates of reliability caused by artificial systematic technical or mechanical error in the estimates of correlation (MEC). Most traditional estimators of reliability embed product–moment correlation coefficient (PMC) in the form of item–score correlation (Rit) or principal component or factor loading (λi).
