Enhanced catalytic electrochemical reduction of dissolved oxygen with ultracleancucurbituril[7]-capped gold nanoparticles

2014

Gold nanoparticles capped with cucurbituril[7] have been prepared in the absence of metallic cations and organic ligands. Remarkably, these nanohybrids encapsulate dissolved oxygen and are highly active in electrochemical reduction. The effect of the presence of sodium and ammonium salts on this catalysed process is also analysed.

Molecular Recognition via Hydrogen Bonding at the Air−Water Interface:  An Isotherm and Fourier Transform Infrared Reflection Spectroscopy Study

Molecular recognition in Langmuir monolayers at the air−water interface as a function of headgroup orientation and substrate using isotherms and in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) reflection spectroscopy has been investigated. Isotherm measurements show that urea and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP) are specifically bound to barbituric acid lipid monolayers. As expected, TAP causes a larger shift in the limiting area of the isotherms than urea due to steric requirements. Organic fluorophores, particularly stimuli-responsive molecules, are very interesting for biological and material sciences applications, but frequently limited by aggregation- and rotation-caused photoluminescence quenching. A series of easily accessible bipyridinium fluorophores, whose emission is quenched by a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) mechanism, is reported. The effect of enriching milk-based beverages with plant sterols or stanols on the fatty acid composition of the products

Five plant sterol (PS)-enriched dairy products from the Spanish market were characterised for fatty acids (FA), volatile compounds and lipid stability. The ingredients used for PS enrichment by the food industry may come from different sources, thus influencing the composition and stability of the lipid fraction. In this study, the FA profile proved highly variable among samples, not agreeing with the nutritional labelling of the products. The volatile profile was characterised.
