"Koulupuvun käyttö on oikeasti niin arkielämän juttu" : etnografinen tutkimus koulupuvun käytöstä Japanissa

2017

Tutkielmassani tarkastelen sitä, millaisia merkityksiä koulupuvun käytöllä on ollut niitä käyttävien yksilöiden elämässä, miten koulupuku on heidän mielestään vaikuttanut heidän asemaansa osana yhteisöä sekä millaisia uudenlaisia merkityksiä japanilainen koulupuku on saanut. Pukeutumista tutkimalla on mahdollista tutkia monia erilaisia kulttuuriin kuuluvia piirteitä, ja olen halunnut työssäni tuoda esille sen, mitä koulupuvun käyttäminen ja siihen liitetyt merkitykset kertovat japanilaisesta kulttuurista. Tutkielmassani olen halunnut painottaa haastateltavieni omaa kokemusta asiasta. Tutkimusaineistoni olen kerännyt teemahaastattelujen avulla. Tutkielmaani varten olen haastatellut viittä ja…

Japanese attitudes towards their English pronunciation

2014

Vaikka englantia puhutaankin nykyään enimmäkseen vieraana kielenä, on äidinkielenä puhuttu englanti yhä standardi kielen opetuksessa. Tutkimus suoritettiin kyselyllä, jossa mitattiin vastaajien asent…

A latent profile analysis of trait emotional intelligence to identify beneficial and risk profiles in well-being and job performance: a study among J…

2016

Trait emotional intelligence (EI) is a noteworthy psychological resource in nursing. However, its effects on well-being and job performance are inconsistent. Thus, we explored the latent beneficial and risk profiles of trait EI among 461 Japanese eldercare nurses. Latent profile analysis revealed six latent profiles. In addition, multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) showed that the profile with the highest overall scores on the trait EI dimensions was associated with the most beneficial outcomes (better well-being, higher job performance). In contrast, the profiles with lower overall scores on the trait EI dimensions showed negative outcomes. Moreover, a disproportional profile, ch…

Air conditioning and heat-related mortality: a multi-country longitudinal study

2020

Background: Air conditioning has been proposed as one of the key factors explaining reductions of heat-related mortality risks observed in the last decades. However, direct evidence is still limited. Methods: We used a multi-country, multi-city, longitudinal design to quantify the independent role of air conditioning in reported attenuation in risk. We collected daily time series of mortality, mean temperature, and yearly air conditioning prevalence for 311 locations in Canada, Japan, Spain, and the USA between 1972 and 2009. For each city and sub-period, we fitted a quasi-Poisson regression combined with distributed lag non-linear models to estimate summer-only temperature–mortality associ…

Suicide and Ambient Temperature: A Multi-Country Multi-City Study

2019

Background: Previous literature suggests that higher ambient temperature may play a role in increasing the risk of suicide. However, no multi-country study has explored the shape of the association and the role of moderate and extreme heat across different locations. Objectives: We examined the short-term temperature–suicide relationship using daily time-series data collected for 341 locations in 12 countries for periods ranging from 4 to 40 y. Methods: We conducted a two-stage meta-analysis. First, we performed location-specific time-stratified case-crossover analyses to examine the temperature–suicide association for each location. Then, we used a multivariate meta-regression to combine t…

Participation and performance trends in 100-km ultra-marathons worldwide

2014

The aims of the present study were to (1) investigate the participation trends for the origin of athletes competing in 100-km ultra-marathons and (2) determine the nationalities of athletes achieving the fastest 100-km race times worldwide. Race times and nationality from 112,283 athletes (15,204 women and 97,079 men) from 102 countries who completed a 100-km ultra-marathon worldwide between 1998 and 2011 were investigated using single- and multi-level regression analyses. The number of finishers increased exponentially, both for women and men. Most of the finishers (73.5%) were from Europe, in particular, France (30.4%). The number of finishers from Japan, Germany, Italy, Poland and the Un…

On Temporal Aspects in Cross-Cultural e-Collaboration Between Finland and Japan Research Teams

2018

Time is an essential dimension in cross-cultural e-collaboration among research project teams. Understanding temporal aspects and project dynamics in cross-cultural research e-collaboration and related processes can improve team members' skills in cross-cultural communication and increase their cultural competence. The present case cultures are Finnish and Japanese, and the case universities are the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) and Keio University (Japan). Three issues are addressed in this article. First, cultural dimensions and time models in the cross-cultural e-collaboration context are discussed. Second, temporal aspects related to e-collaboration activities are introduced. Third,…

Vairāku priekšmetu integrācijas iespējas Japānas kultūras apguvē

2018

Bank-firm credit network in Japan. An analysis of a bipartite network

2015

We present an analysis of the credit market of Japan. The analysis is performed by investigating the bipartite network of banks and firms which is obtained by setting a link between a bank and a firm when a credit relationship is present in a given time window. In our investigation we focus on a community detection algorithm which is identifying communities composed by both banks and firms. We show that the clusters obtained by directly working on the bipartite network carry information about the networked nature of the Japanese credit market. Our analysis is performed for each calendar year during the time period from 1980 to 2011. Specifically, we obtain communities of banks and networks …
