The role of pain and functional impairment in the decision to recommend total joint replacement in hip and knee osteoarthritis: an international cros…
2011
Import JabRef | WosArea Orthopedics; Rheumatology; International audience; Objective: To assess the pain and functional disability levels corresponding to an indication for total joint replacement (TJR) in hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Design: International cross-sectional study in 10 countries. Patients: Consecutive outpatients with definite hip or knee OA attending an orthopaedic outpatient clinic. Gold standard measure for recommendation for TJR: Surgeon's decision that TJR is justified. Outcome measures: Pain (ICOAP: intermittent and constant osteoarthritis pain, 0-100) and functional impairment (HOOS-PS/KOOS-PS: Hip/Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score Physical fun…
Effects of different unstable supports on EMG activity and balance
2013
This study analysed the equilibrium strategies and EMG activity during postural equilibrium in four different unstable surfaces. Thirteen team sport males were tested on a FLAT surface and on three different wobble boards (JAKOBS(®) with easy multidirectional displacements, FREEMAN with strong multidirectional displacements and LATERAL with unidirectional lateral displacements). They had to maintain single-limb stance during 5s for each condition. The right foot centre of pressure (COP) position and its variability with concomitant EMG activity of soleus (SOL), tibialis anterior (TA), peroneus longus (PL) and extensor digitorum longus (EXD) muscles were recorded. Subjects maintained balance…
Heme oxygenase-1 regulates the progression of K/BxN serum transfer arthritis.
2012
Background Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is induced in many cell types as a defense mechanism against stress. We have investigated the possible role of endogenous HO-1 in the effector phase of arthritis using the K/BxN serum transfer model of arthritis in HO-1 heterozygous and homozygous knock-out mice. Methodology/Principal Findings Arthritis was induced in C57/Black-6 xFVB (HO-1+/+, HO-1+/− and HO-1−/−) mice by intraperitoneal injection of 150 µl serum from arthritic K/BxN mice at days 0 and 2. Blood was collected and animals were sacrificed at day 10. Histological analysis was performed in ankle sections. The levels of inflammatory mediators were measured in serum and paw homogenates by enzyme…
Longterm Retention of Tumor Necrosis Factor-α Inhibitor Therapy in a Large Italian Cohort of Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis from the GISEA Regist…
2012
Objective. To evaluate 4-year retention rates of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) inhibitors adalimumab, etanercept, and infliximab among patients with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as derived from an Italian national registry.Methods.The clinical records of 853 adult patients with RA in the GISEA (Gruppo Italiano Studio Early Arthritis) registry were prospectively analyzed to compare drug survival rates and the baseline factors that may predict adherence to therapy.Results.In 2003 and 2004, 324 patients started treatment with adalimumab, 311 with etanercept, and 218 with infliximab. After 4 years, the global retention rate of anti-TNF-α therapy was 42%. Etanercept survival (51.4%) …
Augmentation of tibial plateau fractures with an injectable bone substitute: CERAMENT™. Three year follow-up from a prospective study
2015
Background: Reduction of tibial plateau fractures and maintain a level of well aligned congruent joint is key to a satisfactory clinical outcome and is important for the return to pre-trauma level of activity. Stable internal fixation support early mobility and weight bearing. The augmentation with bone graft substitute is often required to support the fixation to mantain reduction. For these reasons there has been development of novel bone graft substitutes for trauma applications and in particular synthetic materials based on calcium phosphates and/or apatite combined with calcium sulfates. Injectable bone substitutes can optimize the filling of irregular bone defects. The purpose of this…
Effects of electromyostimulation versus voluntary isometric training on elbow flexor muscle strength.
2007
The purpose of this study was to determine whether 7 weeks of standardized (same number and duration of repetitions, sets and rest strictly identical) electromyostimulation training of the elbow flexor muscles would induce strength gains equivalent to those of voluntary isometric training in isometric, eccentric and concentric contractions. Twenty-five males were randomly assigned to an electromyostimulated group (EMS, n=9), a voluntary isometric group (VOL, n=8), or a control group (CON, n=8). Maximal voluntary isometric, eccentric and concentric strength, electromyographic (EMG) activity of the biceps and triceps brachii muscles, elbow flexor muscle activation (twitch interpolation techni…
KINEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF THE SNATCH IN ELITE MALE JUNIOR WEIGHTLIFTERS OF DIFFERENT WEIGHT CATEGORIES
2006
The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in the technical pattern of the snatch in elite junior weightlifters of different weight categories. The sample was a group of 33 men weightlifters from different weight categories. The comparative study included 2 groups, taking into account weight categories. Group A included 17 weightlifters from the lightest categories, 56 and 62 kg; group B included 16 weightlifters from the heaviest categories, 85 and 105 kg. Three-dimensional photogrammetry technique was utilized. Regarding group differences, we can conclude that lifters belonging to heavier categories are more efficient, as they manage to have longer barbell propulsion traject…
The functional and radiographic outcomes following distal radius fracture treatment in a cast for 4 and 6 weeks in the elderly: A randomized trial.
2022
Background. The optimal duration of cast immobilization following distal radius fractures (DRFs) in elderly patients has not been established. Objectives. To assess the functional and radiological parameters following DRF treatment in elderly patients using 2 different periods of cast immobilization. Materials and methods. We assessed 50 patients (33 women and 17 men). The mean age at the beginning of treatment was 71 years. The mean duration of follow-up was 1 year and 3 months. One subgroup (n = 26) included patients treated with a cast for 4 weeks, whereas the other subgroup (n = 24) included patients treated with a cast for 6 weeks. The following measures were assessed: union rate, radi…
Diagnostic Value of Optical Spectral Transmission in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Associations with Clinical Characteristics and Comparison with Joint Ultra…
2020
Objective. To examine the value of optical spectral transmission (OST) in detecting joint inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to evaluate whether OST correlates with certain patient characteristics.Methods.OST measurements were performed in the metacarpophalangeal, proximal intraphalangeal, and wrist joints of 168 patients with RA and 114 controls. OST difference between the 2 groups was statistically examined and subsequently controlled for the effect of possible confounding factors. Diagnostic OST performance was tested by receiver-operating characteristics. Moreover, associations of OST with clinical and serological activity markers (patient group), joint ultrasoun…
Reliability, validity and feasibility of nail ultrasonography in psoriatic arthritis
2016
International audience; Objective: To determine the feasibility, reliability and validity of nails ultrasonography in psoriatic arthritis as an outcome measure. Methods: Pilot prospective single-centre study of eight ultrasonography parameters in B mode and power Doppler concerning the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint, the matrix, the bed and nail plate. Intraobserver and inter-observer reliability was evaluated for the seven quantitative parameters (ICC and kappa). Correlations between ultrasonography and clinical variables were searched to assess external validity. Feasibility was assessed by the time to carry out the examination and the percentage of missing data. Results: Twenty-seven p…
