Indirect Methods for Optimal Control Problems

2003

This chapter is dedicated to the numerical approximation of Optimal Control Problems. The algorithms are based on the necessary conditions for optimality which allow us to use a descent method for the minimization of the cost functional.

Adjoint-based sampling methods for electromagnetic scattering

2010

In this paper we investigate the efficient realization of sampling methods based on solutions of certain adjoint problems. This adjoint approach does not require the explicit knowledge of the Green's function for the background medium, and allows us to sample for all points and all dipole directions simultaneously; thus, several limitations of standard sampling methods are relieved. A detailed derivation of the adjoint approach is presented for two electromagnetic model problems, but the framework can be applied to a much wider class of problems. We also discuss a relation of the adjoint sampling method to standard backprojection algorithms, and present numerical tests that illustrate the e…

The Materialisation of Children’s Mathematical Thinking Through Organisation of Turn-Taking in Small Group Interactions in Kindergarten

2020

This chapter reports from a case study which focuses on the coordination of turn-taking within two small groups of kindergarten children (age 5–6) working on addition problems. The two segments of small group interaction were analysed from a multimodal, interpretative perspective. Drawing on Radford’s (J Res Math Educ, 2:7–44, 2013) theory of knowledge objectification, the study explores the characteristics of children’s turn-taking and what role children’s organisation of turn-taking plays in the movement of the joint activity, and thus for the materialisation of their mathematical thinking. The findings suggest that children’s various ways of organising turn-taking give rise to different …

On the shape of compact hypersurfaces with almost constant mean curvature

2015

The distance of an almost constant mean curvature boundary from a finite family of disjoint tangent balls with equal radii is quantitatively controlled in terms of the oscillation of the scalar mean curvature. This result allows one to quantitatively describe the geometry of volume-constrained stationary sets in capillarity problems.

The Bianchi variety

2010

The totality Lie(V) of all Lie algebra structures on a vector space V over a field F is an algebraic variety over F on which the group GL(V) acts naturally. We give an explicit description of Lie(V) for dim V=3 which is based on the notion of compatibility of Lie algebra structures.

Prescribing the behaviour of geodesics in negative curvature

2010

Given a family of (almost) disjoint strictly convex subsets of a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold M, such as balls, horoballs, tubular neighborhoods of totally geodesic submanifolds, etc, the aim of this paper is to construct geodesic rays or lines in M which have exactly once an exactly prescribed (big enough) penetration in one of them, and otherwise avoid (or do not enter too much in) them. Several applications are given, including a definite improvement of the unclouding problem of [PP1], the prescription of heights of geodesic lines in a finite volume such M, or of spiraling times around a closed geodesic in a closed such M. We also prove that the Hall ray phenomenon desc…

Feuilletages deCP(n) : de l’holonomie hyperbolique pour les minimaux exceptionnels

1992

Let ℱ be a holomorphic foliation ofCP(n). If ℱ has a leaf L, the closure L of which is disjoint from the singular set of the foliation, we prove that there exists a loop in a leaf contained in L with contracting hyperbolic holonomy.

Pseudo-rotations of the closed annulus : variation on a theorem of J. Kwapisz

2003

Consider a homeomorphism h of the closed annulus S^1*[0,1], isotopic to the identity, such that the rotation set of h is reduced to a single irrational number alpha (we say that h is an irrational pseudo-rotation). For every positive integer n, we prove that there exists a simple arc gamma joining one of the boundary component of the annulus to the other one, such that gamma is disjoint from its n first iterates under h. As a corollary, we obtain that the rigid rotation of angle alpha can be approximated by homeomorphisms conjugate to h. The first result stated above is an analog of a theorem of J. Kwapisz dealing with diffeomorphisms of the two-torus; we give some new, purely two-dimension…

P-spaces and the Whyburn property

2009

We investigate the Whyburn and weakly Whyburn property in the class of $P$-spaces, that is spaces where every countable intersection of open sets is open. We construct examples of non-weakly Whyburn $P$-spaces of size continuum, thus giving a negative answer under CH to a question of Pelant, Tkachenko, Tkachuk and Wilson. In addition, we show that the weak Kurepa Hypothesis (a set-theoretic assumption weaker than CH) implies the existence of a non-weakly Whyburn $P$-space of size $\aleph_2$. Finally, we consider the behavior of the above-mentioned properties under products; we show in particular that the product of a Lindel\"of weakly Whyburn P-space and a Lindel\"of Whyburn $P$-space is we…

Traitement chirurgical des fractures du condyle mandibulaire de l'adulte en France en 2005

2007

Summary Introduction The authors had for aim to present the latest trends in the surgical management of mandibular condylar fractures in France, in 2005. Material and methods One hundred maxillofacial surgeons were questioned on the surgical management of condylar fractures and indications. Results were presented at the 41st Congress of Stomatology and Maxillofacial surgery. Results The overall reply rate was 70%. Condylar fractures are generally managed in teaching hospitals. Open reduction and fixation was deemed appropriate in low subcondylar fractures in 76% of the cases, in 10% for diacapitular fractures. Therapeutic details and indications were a matter of huge variability. Discussion…
