Fifteen operationally important decisions in the planning of biodiversity offsets

2018

Many development projects, whether they are about construction of factories, mines, roads, railways, new suburbs, shopping malls, or even individual houses, have negative environmental consequences. Biodiversity offsetting is about compensating that damage, typically via habitat restoration, land management, or by establishment of new protected areas. Offsets are the fourth step of the so-called mitigation hierarchy, in which ecological damage is first avoided, minimized second, and third restored locally. Whatever residual damage remains is then offset. Offsetting has been increasingly adopted all around the world, but simultaneously serious concerns are expressed about the validity of the…

Calibrating Expert Assessments Using Hierarchical Gaussian Process Models

2020

Expert assessments are routinely used to inform management and other decision making. However, often these assessments contain considerable biases and uncertainties for which reason they should be calibrated if possible. Moreover, coherently combining multiple expert assessments into one estimate poses a long-standing problem in statistics since modeling expert knowledge is often difficult. Here, we present a hierarchical Bayesian model for expert calibration in a task of estimating a continuous univariate parameter. The model allows experts' biases to vary as a function of the true value of the parameter and according to the expert's background. We follow the fully Bayesian approach (the s…

The effect of silent gaps on temporal weights in loudness judgments

2020

Abstract Human loudness judgments of time-varying sounds show a non-uniform temporal weighting pattern with increased weights at the beginning of a sound. Four experiments were conducted to investigate whether this primacy effect reoccurs after a silent gap of an appropriate duration that is inserted into a level-fluctuating sound. In three of the experiments, contiguous sounds as well as sounds containing silent gaps of different durations were presented. The temporal loudness weights were compared between the sounds that contained a gap and the sounds without a gap. The data showed that with increasing gap duration an increasingly pronounced primacy effect reoccurred on the second sound p…

Higher education instructors' intention to use educational video games: an fsQCA approach

2019

Educational video games (EVGs) offer instructors a myriad of opportunities to motivate and engage students in the learning process. Nevertheless, instructors can be influenced by barriers that prevent them from using EVGs in their courses (e.g. lack of expertise with EVGs). Instructors can also be influenced by different drivers that might increase their intention to use EVGs. This research analyses the effects of four variables (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attention, and relevance) as factors contributing or preventing the use of EVGs by instructors serving in Higher Education institutions. Data of 170 instructors, who were surveyed through an online questionnaire using a …

Congruence of group therapist and group member alliance judgments in emotionally focused group therapy for binge eating disorder.

2016

We used West and Kenny's (2011) Truth-and-Bias (TB) model to examine how accurately group therapists' judge their group members' alliances, and the effects of therapist-patient congruence in alliance ratings on patient outcomes. Were considered: (a) directional bias - therapists' tendency to over- or underrate their clients' alliances, (b) truth strength - clients' alliance ratings, and (c) bias strength - therapists' tendency to conflate their alliance ratings for a specific group member with the average alliance ratings for the other members of the group. There were 118 obese adult patients with binge-eating disorder that were treated by 8 therapists with Emotionally Focused Group Therapy…

Meaningful time for professional growth or a waste of time?: a study in five countries on teachers' experiences within master's dissertation/thesis w…

2020

The relationship between master’s thesis work and teachers’ professional development has rarely been explored empirically, yet. Drawing upon a larger study, this paper investigates how teachers who were studying for or who have recently graduated from Master of Education programmes offered in five countries – Poland, Portugal, England, Latvia, Romania – perceive the usefulness of dissertation/thesis work for their professional development and how they attempt to use their MA research results in their (future) teaching practice. Results suggest that although most respondents recognized their MA dissertation/thesis work as having a positive impact on their professional development by enhancin…

Determinación de la edad de un extranjero indocumentado : A propósito de la sentencia de la audiencia provincial de barcelona, de 24 de enero de 2020

2021

In recent years, immigration of minors has increased, which means that administrations establish a differentiated treatment for this sector of immigration due to the fact that they are minors; There are many aspects to take into account in these cases, including verifying the minority age, a fact that is more complicated when it comes to adolescents. This is what is analyzed by the Judgment of the Provincial Court of Barcelona, of January 24, 2020, which confirms the Resolution of the General Directorate of Attention to Children and Adolescents, which agreed to the closure of the homelessness file and the admission of the plaintiff in a Protection Center until the verification of their pers…

Consideraciones sobre la cláusula irph a la luz de sus antecedentes y de la doctrina consolidada del tribunal de justicia de la union europea

2021

By issuing its judgment of March 3, 2020, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has terminated the last episode in the evolution of the IRPH index to which almost a tenth of mortgages have been referring. in Spain, compared to the rest that the Euribor takes as a reference, declaring in essence that consumers will be able to go to court to declare the abusiveness of the clause that the aforementioned index contains in the deeds of constitution of the mortgage. To understand the scope of the current situation, it is convenient to consider even briefly what the IRPH consists of and the consequences that its application has entailed for the affected consumer borrowers, taking into …
