The paper aims at assessing Jacob Viner's role in that brand of monetary thought which historians associate with the Chicago School and whose origins can be retraced in the writings and teaching of Frank Knight, Lloyd Mints, Henry Simons and Viner himself. This paper examines Jacob Viner's contribution to the debate and the policy decision-making concerning international monetary policy from the Great Depression to the Bretton Woods agreements. An outstanding member of the so-called 'early Chicago School of Political Economy', Viner was actively engaged in the debate over the causes and cures of the Depression, emphasizing the important role international economic problems played in producing its onset and in reinforcing its duration. Abstract We show that the toroidal Lie group G = ℂ2/Λ, where Λ is the lattice generated by (1, 0), (0, 1) and (τ̂, τ͂), with τ̂ ∉ ℝ, is isomorphic to the generalized Jacobian JL of the complex elliptic curve C with modulus τ̂, defined by any divisor class L ≡ (M) + (N) of C fulfilling M − N = [℘ (τ͂) : ℘´(τ͂) : 1] ∈ C. This follows from an apparently new relation between the Weierstrass sigma and elliptic functions.

Tool-Point Control for a Redundant Heave Compensated Hydraulic Manipulator

Abstract In this paper, theoretical and experimental implementation of heave compensation on a redundant hydraulically actuated manipulator with 3-dof has been carried out. The redundancy is solved using the pseudo-inverse Jacobian method. Techniques for minimizing velocities and avoiding mechanical joint saturations is implemented in the null space joint motion. Model based feed-forward, combined with a PI-controller handles the velocity control of each joint. A time domain simulation model has been developed, experimentally verified, and used for controller parameter tuning. CLEAR: Covariant LEAst-Square Refitting with Applications to Image Restoration

International audience; In this paper, we propose a new framework to remove parts of the systematic errors affecting popular restoration algorithms, with a special focus for image processing tasks. Generalizing ideas that emerged for $\ell_1$ regularization, we develop an approach re-fitting the results of standard methods towards the input data. Total variation regularizations and non-local means are special cases of interest. We identify important covariant information that should be preserved by the re-fitting method, and emphasize the importance of preserving the Jacobian (w.r.t. the observed signal) of the original estimator. This paper presents a new framework for manifold learning based on a sequence of principal polynomials that capture the possibly nonlinear nature of the data. The proposed Principal Polynomial Analysis (PPA) generalizes PCA by modeling the directions of maximal variance by means of curves instead of straight lines. Contrarily to previous approaches PPA reduces to performing simple univariate regressions which makes it computationally feasible and robust. Quotients of Fermat curves and a Hecke character

AbstractWe explicitly identify infinitely many curves which are quotients of Fermat curves. We show that some of these have simple Jacobians with complex multiplication by a non-cyclotomic field. For a particular case we determine the local zeta functions with two independent methods. The first uses Jacobi sums and the second applies the general theory of complex multiplication, we verify that both methods give the same result.
