Difract: Un nuevo laboratorio virtual para la modelización matemática de las propiedades de difracción de redes fractales
2011
[EN] This work presents a new virtual laboratory, Difract, developed with Easy Java Simulations, for using in Optics courses as a computer tool for the mathematical modelling of the diffraction properties of 1D and 2D fractal gratings. This virtual laboratory enables students to quickly and easily analyze the influence on the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the different construction parameters of the fractal grating. As an application example, the Cantor fractal set has been considered.

Networked relationships in the e-MID Interbank market: A trading model with memory
2014
Interbank markets are fundamental for bank liquidity management. In this paper, we introduce a model of interbank trading with memory. Our model reproduces features of preferential trading patterns in the e-MID market recently empirically observed through the method of statistically validated networks. The memory mechanism is used to introduce a proxy of trust in the model. The key idea is that a lender, having lent many times to a borrower in the past, is more likely to lend to that borrower again in the future than to other borrowers, with which the lender has never (or has in- frequently) interacted. The core of the model depends on only one parameter representing the initial attractiven…
Why Finnish polytechnics reject top applicants
2019
I use a panel of higher education clearinghouse data to study the centralized assignment of applicants to Finnish polytechnics. Many top applicants remain completely unassigned each year. The same applicants' future applications reveal that many of them should have been admitted to a different program immediately. The application system, however, discourages applicants from applying to multiple programs within the same year, while at the same time leaving them in the dark on the set of programs willing to admit them. Improvements to the application system have the potential to substantially reduce reapplications, thereby shortening long queues into Finnish higher education. peerReviewed
Skaņas analizēšana elpas esamības noteikšanai
2016
Advanced models for smart multilayered plates based on Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem
2017
In the present work, families of equivalent singe layer and layer-wise models for the static and free vibrations analysis of magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates are developed. The models are defined in the framework of a unified formulation, which offers a systematic approach for generating refined plate theories through suitable expansions of the through-the-thickness components of the relevant fields, considering the expansion order as a free parameter. The key features of the developed formulation are: a) the condensation of the electric and magnetic description into the mechanical representation, based on the quasi-static electric-magnetic approximation, which allows to reduce t…
Experiencing the Smart City Concept: The Challenge of Intelligent Districts
2016
Future cities will become a complex system of variable geometry, where ICT is the main driver of all connections, an intelligent tool that enables the dialogue between different systems, the bonding agent of the smart city. The man still remains the main actor, because he redesigns his habits, corrects his behaviors, shares ideas and solutions based on continuous feedback from the environment. The areas where there are large urban innovations are the field of mobility and energy and ICT of course. Approaches to intelligent cities implementations change, because they are powered by the aspects related to communication. The dimension of the smart districts appears to be the only convincing mo…
Perspectives on executive information systems
1995
Executives who consider the acquisition of Executive Information Systems (EIS) may encounter several major problems already in their selection and introduction stages. Key issues are the following: Can the EIS's really match our managerial needs and support decision making in our organizational contingencies? How widely in the leadership levels can they be introduced? Are they easy-to-learn, easy-to-use and easily customizable? Do they utilize the newest information technology, e.g. graphics and modern interface technology? Can they work in our computer network? In order to facilitate elegant solutions of the selection problems, we construct an evaluation framework which guides the selectio…
Workflow-Based Decision Support for Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
2010
Abstract To achieve high quality designs, processes, and services that meet or exceed industry standards, it is crucial to identify all potential failures throughout a system and work to minimize or prevent their occurrence or effects. This paper presents an innovative approach to Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) that uses a Decision Support System (DSS) for supporting the FMEA processes. The DSS is powered by a workflow engine that guides the users through the processes by considering standard work templates or previous similar cases. It is also built as a framework for decision support tools so, beside its default one, different FMEA work instruments can be plugged-in and used thr…
From Extensity to Protensity in CAS: Adding Sounds to Icons
2009
Being aware of the gap between technological offers and user expectations, the paper aims to illustrate the necessity of anthropocentric designs ("user-pulled") and to reveal the dangers of current ICT designs ("technology-pushed"). Since the gap is deepened because of insufficient innovative use of new agent-oriented technology potential, an affordable manner to "invent new Computer-Aided x" application domains is proposed. To substantiate the approach, the domain must be challenging, easy to implement and "as humanist as possible": Computer-Aided Semiosis (CAS). On this background, the paper also presents a new and challenging concept in IT applied research, borrowed from psychology and m…
