Benign fibro-osseous lesions of the maxillas: analysis of 11 cases

2008

Introduction: A study is made of the principal characteristics of the oral lesions biopsied in our Service of Oral Surgery and histologically diagnosed as corresponding to fibro-osseous lesions of the maxillas. Patients and methods: A retrospective review was made of all the biopsies made in a Service of Oral Surgery between 1996 and 2003. The reason for consultation was analyzed, along with patient age, sex, clinical and radiological characteristics, tentative diagnosis, histological diagnosis and treatment provided. Results: A total of 1238 biopsies were performed during the study period. Of these, only 11 corresponded to benign fibro-osseous lesions (7 women and 4 men). The mean patient …

Sharp mandibular bone irregularities after lower third molar extraction: incidence, clinical features and risk factors

2012

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and clinical symptoms associated with sharp mandibular bone irregularities (SMBI) after lower third molar extraction and to identify possible risk factors for this complication. Study Design: A mixed study design was used. A retrospective cohort study of 1432 lower third molar extractions was done to determine the incidence of SMBI and a retrospective case-control study was done to determine potential demographic and etiologic factors by comparing those patients with postoperative SMBI with controls. Results: Twelve SMBI were found (0.84%). Age was the most important risk factor for this complication. The operated side and…

Bimaxillary simultaneous immediate loading of full-arch restorations : a case series

2017

Aim To describe a bimaxillary simultaneous immediate loading protocol with full-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses. Material and Methods A prospective case series of 8 patients who required full-arch rehabilitation was conducted. The main inclusion criteria were patients with teeth that required extraction. At least 1 molar per arch was temporarily employed to stabilize the surgical template and the provisional prosthesis during intraoral relining. Results Two upper implants failed in 1 patient. Structural fracture was registered in 3 patients, around 3 months after loading. All of them had bruxism. Three esthetic complications were registered: midline deviation, canting of the oclusal…

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) risk in breast cancer patients after zoledronic acid treatment

2010

The importance of adoption of recommendations for ONJ prevention strategy will notably grow for zoledronic acid in the next future, in view of possible further enlargement of its indications (even with different timing and schedules) in breast cancer patients without bone metastases (such as in adjuvant and neo-adjuvant settings, and in hormonotherapy-induced osteopenia

Simplifying the dental/periodontal management of patients with metabolic bone fragility receiving treatment with denosumab

2020

Denosumab (DNB) is a bone-targeted medication used to preserve structural integrity and minimise the risk of fragility fractures in metastatic cancer and metabolic bone disorders. DNB targets and binds RANK Ligand, inhibiting osteoclast maturation, function, and survival. In contrast with nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs), DNB does not bind to hydroxyapatite and incorporate into bone; thus, bone cellular remodelling recovers rapidly after drug suspension. Denosumab has benn linked to the occurrence of osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), a uncommon but severe oral side effect with a higher prevalence in metastatic cancer patients than in patients with metabolic bone fragility. Althou…

Nonexposed Variant of Bisphosphonate-associated Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: A Case Series

2010

Abstract Purpose To report a case series of patients with the nonexposed variant of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw—a form of jaw osteonecrosis that does not manifest with necrotic bone exposure/mucosal fenestration. Methods Among 332 individuals referred to 5 clinical centers in Europe because of development of jawbone abnormalities after or during exposure to bisphosphonates, we identified a total of 96 patients who presented with the nonexposed variant of osteonecrosis. Relevant data were obtained via clinical notes; radiological investigations; patients' history, and referral letters. Results The most common clinical feature of nonexposed osteonecrosis was jaw bone pa…

The diagnostic possibilities of Positron Emission Tomography (PET)

2014
