Welfare status of cage farmed European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax): A comparison between submerged and surface cages

2011

Abstract Submersible sea-cages represent an alternative method to standard surface-based cages, and could help solve several production problems that exist in surface-based farming, such as heavy storms, algal and jellyfish blooms and attacks by predators. In this study, we investigated growth, haematological, biochemical and immunological parameters of European sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ) farmed in surface and submersible cages, to compare the physiological status under different rearing conditions. In addition, we evaluated the use of erythrocyte HSP70 levels as a biomarker of fish welfare. The study was conducted in two submerged and two surface cages filled with D. labrax . No sig…

Chemosensory assessment of sperm competition levels and the evolution of internal spermatophore guarding

2006

Males of many species adjust their reproductive behaviour according to the perceived risk of sperm competition. Although this phenomenon is widespread in insects and other animals, the mechanisms that allow mates to assess sperm competition levels remain largely unexplored. In this study, we analysed the mating behaviour of pairs ofTenebrio molitorbeetles under three odour treatments representing increasing levels of sperm competition risk (SCR) and sperm competition intensity (SCI). Copula duration and male and female post-copulatory behaviour varied significantly with odour treatment. Both copula duration and post-copulatory associations (PCAs) increased significantly in odour treatments …

Predicting the current and future global distribution of the invasive freshwater hydrozoan Craspedacusta sowerbii

2021

AbstractThe freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii is one of the most widespread invasive species, but its global distribution remains uncertain due to ephemeral appearances and general lack of information in various aquatic environments. The aim of this study was to map current and future distributions (2050 and 2100) using Species Distribution Models allowing to visualize the habitat suitability and make projections of its changes under potential climate change scenarios. Except in Oceania where the range decreased, an expansion of C. sowerbii was projected during the next century under modeled future scenarios being most intensive during the first half of the century. The present st…

Polyp flats, a new system for experimenting with jellyfish polyps, with insights into the effects of ocean acidification

2014

Research interest on jellyfish has grown exponentially over the last years and studies focusing on the biology and ecology of the jellyfish polyp stage are being recognized as crucial in understanding jellyfish proliferations. Due to the difficulty of conducting in situ work with jellyfish polyps, laboratory experiments are the most used approach. Here, we describe the design and successful testing of a new system that allows continuous seawater renewal while keeping constant the selected physicochemical conditions of the water throughout the experiment in contrast to closed systems used previously. As a first test, we started an experiment to assess the effects of ocean acidification on th…

Water Temperature Increasing Caused Mastigias Papua Disappeared in Marine Lake Lenmakana Misool Raja Ampat Regency, West Papua

2020

Mastigias papua is a jellyfish that is trademark of marine lakes. Ongeim’l Tketau Lake in Palau, Hang Du I Lake in Vietnam, Kakaban Lake in Kalimantan, and Lenmakana Lake in Raja Ampat Papua are exotic tourist destinations because of presence of these biota in the lake. Water temperature is very influential on the life of a jellyfish because of its mutual symbiosis with brown algae zooxanthellae. Mastigias has totally disappeared in several places due to water temperature increasing, including Lenmakana Lake in the West Monsoon 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. The absence of Mastigias in this lake will be explained by recorded logger data installed in the lake and at sea. Secondary data from NOAA a…

Megabenthos Underwater Video (MUV): a new device to evaluate species distribution in hard-to-reach marine areas

2021

A device, called Megabenthos Underwater Video (MUV), was designed and built for the counting and the size estimate of benthic organisms in hard-to-reach areas. Since 2014 Cassiopea andromeda, an invasive alien jellyfish in the Mediterranean Sea with benthic behavior, colonized a recreational harbor (Cala) of Palermo with a stable population. Studying the species distribution in this area with classical methods (such as visual census, ROV, etc.) was not applicable due to the large presence of obstacles (ropes, anchor cables, boats) and to dive difficulties in these types of area. The MUV was tested from 2017 to 2018 for the study of the spatial-temporal distribution of C. andromeda in the Ca…
