Production of charged pions, kaons and protons at large transverse momenta in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV

2014

Transverse momentum spectra of pi(+/-), K-+/- and p((p) over bar) up to p(T) = 20 GeV/c at mid-rapidity in pp, peripheral (60-80%) and central (0-5%) Pb-Pb collisions at v root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV have been measured using the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The proton-to-pion and the kaon-to-pionratios both show a distinct peak at p(T) approximate to 3 GeV/c in central Pb-Pb collisions. Below the peak, p(T) 10 GeV/c particle ratios in pp and Pb-Pb collisions are in agreement and the nuclear modification factors for pi(+/-), K-+/- and p((p) over bar) indicate that, within the systematic and statistical uncertainties, the suppression is the same. This suggests that the chemical comp…

Search for new phenomena with the monojet and missing transverse momentum signature using the ATLAS detector in s=7TeV proton–proton collisions

2011

A search for new phenomena in events featuring a high energy jet and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV is presented using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 33 pb(-1) recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The number of observed events is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. This result is interpreted in terms of limits on a model of Large Extra Dimensions. (C) 2011 CERN. Understanding LHC jets in the light of RHIC data

2012

Hard probes are a cornerstone in the ongoing program to determine the properties of hot and dense QCD matter as created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. LHC measurements have so far resulted in a wealth of high P_T data, opening new kinematic windows with high statistics. Yet on first glance, several observations are counter-intuitive and seem to contradict results from the RHIC high P_T program. This calls for a combined analysis of high P_T hadrons and reconstructed jets at RHIC and LHC in a unified framework testing a large number of theoretical models for both medium evolution and shower medium interactions against the systematics of the data. A consistent picture of shower-me…

Modelling jet quenching

2013

Abstract High P T measurements of hard hadrons or jets at RHIC and LHC appear contradictory and in some cases counterintuitive, but upon closer investigation they represent a coherent picture of jet-medium interaction physics which can be established with systematic comparisons of models against a large body of data. This picture is consistent with a perturbative QCD mechanism and does not require exotic assumptions. This overview outlines how several key measurements each partially constrain shower-medium interaction physics and how from the sum of those the outlines of the mechanism of jet quenching can be deduced. Most current jet results from LHC can be naturally understood in this pict…

Hard dihadron correlations in heavy-ion collisions at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and CERN Large Hadron Collider

2011

High transverse momentum (${P}_{T}$) processes are considered to be an important tool to probe and understand the medium produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions via the interaction of hard, perturbatively produced partons with the medium. In this context, triggered hard dihadron correlations constitute a class of observables set between hard single inclusive hadrons (dominated by the leading jet fragments) and fully reconstructed jets; while they probe some features of the perturbative QCD evolution of a parton shower in the medium, they do not suffer from the problem of finding a suitable separation between soft hadrons coming from perturbative jets and soft hadrons coming from …

Measurement of the tt¯ production cross section using dilepton events in pp¯ collisions

2011

We present a measurement of the a production cross section sigma((u) over bar) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using 5.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector. We consider final states with at least two jets and two leptons (ee, e mu, mu mu), and events with one jet for the e mu final state as well. The measured cross section is sigma((u) over bar) = 7.36(-0.79)(+0.90)(stat + syst) pb. This result combined with the cross section measurement in the lepton + jets final state yields sigma((u) over bar) = 7.56(-0.56)(+0.63)(stat + syst) pb, which agrees with the standard model expectation. The relative precision of 8% of this measurement is comparable …

Study of the associated production of photons andb-quark jets inpp¯collisions ats=1.96  TeV

2010

The cross section for photon production in association with at least one jet containing a b quark has been measured in proton antiproton collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 340 pb{sup -1} collected with the CDF II detector. Both the differential cross section as a function of photon transverse energy E{sub T}{sup {gamma}}and the total cross section are measured and compared to a next-to-leading order prediction for the process.

Observation of monojet events and tentative interpretation

1994

Abstract A data sample corresponding to almost two million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP has been searched for monojet events. Three events were found, in agreement with the expectation from the process e + e − → γ * v v ¯ , with γ * → f f ¯ . Two events are hadronic, the third one being an e + e − pair. All monojet masses are in excess of 3 GeV/ c 2 , and two of the event have large transverse momenta: 18.5 and 20.3 GeV/ c . These kinematic characteristics are quite unlikely in the process e + e − → γ * v v ¯ . The probability of their occurence increases substantially when processes involving further Z or W exchanges are taken into account, but still remains at …

Measurement of inclusive production of light meson resonances in hadronic decays of the Z0

1993

A study of inclusive production of the meson resonances ρ0, K*0 (892), f{hook}0 (975) and f{hook}2 (1270) in hadronic decays of the Z0 is presented. The measured mean meson multiplicity per hadronic event is 0.83 ± 0.14 for the ρ0 0.64 ± 0.24 for the K*0 (892), 0.10 ± 0.04 for the f{hook}0 (975) in the momentum range p > 0.05pbeam (xp > 0.05) and 0.11 ± 0.05 for the f{hook}2 (1270) for xp > 0.1. These values and the corresponding differential cross sections ( 1 σhadr) dσ dxp for the vector mesons are in good agreement with the predictions of the JETSET 7.3 PS and HERWIG 5.4 models. The f{hook}2 (1270) production is overestimated by HERWIG but its xp-shape is correctly reproduced. T…

Measurement of the production cross section forZ/γ*in association with jets inppcollisions ats=7  TeVwith the ATLAS detector

2012

Results are presented on the production of jets of particles in association with a Z/gamma* boson, in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector. The analysis includes the full 2010 data set, collected with a low rate of multiple proton-proton collisions in the accelerator, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1). Inclusive jet cross sections in Z/gamma* events, with Z/gamma* decaying into electron or muon pairs, are measured for jets with transverse momentum p(T) > 30 GeV and jet rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 4.4. The measurements are compared to next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations, and to predictions from different Monte Carl…
