Terrorism in the Balkans. Genesis - trends - forecasts

The author of the article presents a phenomenon of terrorism in the Balkans throughout the 19th, 20th an 21st centuries. She highlights a thesis that specific phenomenon of terrorism in the region requires additional studies, mostly of heuristic nature. Among the types of Balkan terrorism there is terrorism connected to national and liberation movements and political terrorism. Furthermore, terrorist actions in Romania and Bulgaria, terrorism of the Ustashe and terrorism of the anti-Yugoslav emigration and other its forms have been indicated. Ensimmäinen moderni terroristinen itsemurhaisku tapahtui Libanonissa vuonna 1981. Iskua seuranneina vuosikymmeninä itsemurhaiskut ovat levinneet lukuisten eri terroristijärjestöjen käyttöön useille eri maantieteellisille alueille. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa keskityn itsemurhaiskuihin ja tämän iskutaktiikan leviämiseen eri terroristiryhmien välillä. Tutkimus kartoittaa samalla eri terroristiryhmien välisiä verkostoja. The aim of this article is to analyze the rise of the so-called Islamic State in the perspective of a Middle Eastern and commentator for “The Independent”, Patrick Cockburn, who also publishes in the “London Review of Books. The text begins with a sketch of the geopolitical determinants for the spread of the Islamic holy war, i.e. jihad. Then, it focuses on the disturbing phenomenon of sectarianism – directed mainly at the Shia branch of Islam – the attitudes of extremist Sunni preachers.
