2011

Lähteiden käyttö on olennainen osa mediadiskurssia.

Research i źródła informacji w świetle badań środowiska dziennikarskiego

2016

Zgromadzony w toku prac badawczych obszerny materiał empiryczny pozwolił zainicjować dotychczas mało znane lub pomijane kierunki badań nad przebiegiem procesów informacyjnych w pracy dziennikarskiej i – szerzej – w organizacji medialnej.

A Changing Media Landscape. Science, the Public and the Press: The Case of Climate Change

2013

Economic restructuring in the media industry has eliminated many professional journalists’ jobs, reductions that may have been hardest on specialized journalists reporting areas like science, technology, economics, or international affairs. This makes audiences even more dependent on new, often social, media for scientific information. The concept of «critical science literacy» is introduced as a way to capture the skills needed to navigate science news in the evolving media landscape. While these same skills were needed to make sense of science in the «old» media world as well, the contemporary shift resulting in attenuation of authoritative journalistic voices is likely to continue, deman…

Figurative emotional expression in popular science headlines

2016

This study is devoted to science journalism and it explores how audience engagement is achieved through emotion-laden figurative (e.g., metaphorical and metonymic) expressions used in headlines. It is claimed that figurative expressions foreground emotional investments in science reporting while retaining the semblance of journalistic objectivity. With the use of a multiple open-coding procedure of the sample of 250 most read headlines from the website of the international science magazine gathered between November 2013 and November 2014, the main patterns of figuration are identified, including specific and metaphors and such schemata as conduit, event structure, complex system and force d…

Constructing a “breakthrough”: News values in Science Magazine's 2017 ranking of most important discoveries

2018

The objective of this study is to conduct a stylistic analysis of the synopses publicized in the end-of-the-year ranking list of 2017 scientific “breakthroughs” from Science Magazine. The article provides a review of literature on science popularization (also known as science accommodation) and presents the typology of news values and rationalization cues that are used by editors to make science-related coverage both newsworthy and credible at the same time. The article lists the possible ways in which scientific findings can be stylistically constructed as “breakthroughs”. The analysis consists in quantifying and illustrating the typical stylistic maneuvers for framing selected science-rel…

Economic Double Censorship

2020

This chapter explores the censorship impact generated by economic logic on the selection and coverage of topics in factual formats and current affairs documentaries on French television. This prelimina- ry research studies more specifically the subcontracting relationships between TV channels and production companies from semi- structured interviews with various categories of professionals (managers of TV press agencies, journalists, directors, Commissioning Editor). The analysis distinguishes two types of censorship ef- fects. The competitive relationships and the business models of the broadcasters condition their positions in the media field and thus exercise a structural censorship on t…
