Reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Bewilderment Trilogy” as Bildungsromane
2018
Abstract In this essay, Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Bewilderment Trilogy” is read as a series of Bildungsromane that test the limits of that genre. In these thematically unrelated novels, characters reach critical points in their lives when they are confronted with the ways in which their respective childhoods have shaped their grownup expectations and professional careers. In each, the protagonist has a successful career, whether as a musician (The Unconsoled), a detective (When We Were Orphans), or a carer (Never Let Me Go), but finds it difficult to overcome childhood trauma. Ishiguro’s treatment of childhood in these novels foregrounds the tension between individual subjectivity and the formal st…
Contre l'autonomie et la clôture du texte : formes et ambiguïtés de la fiction moderniste européenne : (1910-1939)
2014
Although it has been a key concept of literary criticism in the English-speaking world for more than a half-century, modernism remains a relatively misunderstood notion in France, owing to its proximity to somewhat close concepts such as modernity and avant-garde, which it only partially overlaps. The concept is relevant to experimentation in all literary genres, but this study focuses on the novel, with texts by James Joyce, André Gide, Ramón Gómez de la Serna and Virginia Woolf. Those have often been mischaracterized by literary critics as either mimetic novels — though more realistic than realist novels — or more frequently as emblematic of the self-referential text, as defined by the do…
Corpus Stylistics and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man: (De-)constructing the Spirit of the Soul
2019
Corpus Stylistics is an emerging field in the discipline of Linguistics which has become increasingly popular during the last decades: applying corpus methods and techniques to the stylistic analysis of literary texts seems to be a successful way of making linguistic evidence, style ornamentations, aesthetic choices, manners of expressions or deviations from language norms, more visible to the eyes of the traditional literary critic or, simply, the reader. Reading A Portrait of the Artist as a young Man by James Joyce becomes challenging again if we find new lexical, grammatical patterns and structural features that serve as evidence for our critical hypotheses. Easily and rapidly processed…

JAMES JOYCE’S A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN. A CORPUS-STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF ITS ITALIAN TRANSLATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR EFL TEACHING
2016
Brian Friel’s concern about the role and the value of the act of translation certainly reminds the reader of James Joyce’s famous words on the cultural – and most of all linguistic – differences between the protagonist of his book and the English headmaster of the school he works at. The present contribution aims at offering a comparative analysis of some of the Italian translations of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man through a corpus-based approach. Corpora can be used in a classroom of EFL or of Translation Studies, to draw students’ attention towards the various translation strategies and the linguistic information useful in translation and learning process. For such reasons, I in…
