Distinct muscle-tendon interaction during running at different speeds and in different loading conditions
2019
The interaction between the Achilles tendon and the triceps surae muscles seems to be modulated differently with various task configurations. Here we tested the hypothesis that the increased forces and ankle joint work during running under contrasting conditions (altered speed or load) would be met by different, time-dependent adjustments at the muscle-tendon level. Ultrasonography, electromyography, kinematics, and ground reaction force measurements were used to examine Achilles tendon, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscle mechanics in 16 runners in four different running conditions, consisting of a combination of two different speeds (preferred and +20% of preferred speed) and two loading con…
Voima- ja nopeusharjoittelun vaikutus 40-85-vuotiaiden pikajuoksijoiden sääriluun mineraalimäärään, -tiheyteen ja geometrisiin ominaisuuksiin
2008
Suominen, Tuuli 2008. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää 20 viikon progr…
Individual Sprint Force-Velocity Profile Adaptations to In-Season Assisted and Resisted Velocity-Based Training in Professional Rugby
2020
We tested the hypothesis that the degree of adaptation to highly focused sprint training at opposite ends of the sprint Force-Velocity (FV) spectrum would be associated with initial sprint FV profile in rugby athletes. Training-induced changes in sprint FV profiles were computed before and after an eight-week in-season resisted or assisted sprint training protocol, including a three-week taper. Professional male rugby players (age: 18.9 ±
Cross-Country Skiing and Running’s Association with Cardiovascular Events and All-Cause Mortality:A Review of the Evidence
2019
A large body of evidence demonstrates positive, graded effects of PA on cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality with increasing intensity compared with lower PA intensity. Running is often designated as a high-intensity PA with substantial evidence supporting its health benefits. Cross-country skiing is among the most demanding aerobic endurance exercises and requires engaging the upper- and lower-body. Cross-country skiing is often regarded as high-intensity PA, which has been associated with significant health benefits. However, a robust body of evidence identifying the dose-response relation between cross-country skiing volume and health outcomes is sparse. Therefore, this r…
Maksimaalisen aerobisen hapenottokykytestin metaboliset vasteet vesijuoksussa verrattuna juoksumatolla juoksuun
2017
Johdanto.
Do Running and Strength Exercises Reduce Daily Muscle Inactivity Time?
2016
Understanding how a specific exercise changes daily activity patterns is important when designing physical activity interventions. We examined the effects of strength and interval running exercise sessions on daily activity patterns using recordings of quadriceps and hamstring muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity and inactivity. Five male and five female subjects taking part in a 10-week training programme containing both strength and interval running training sessions were measured for daily muscle EMG activities during three days: on a strength day, an interval running day, and a day without exercise. EMG was measured using textile electrodes embedded into sport shorts that were worn 9…
Beneficial effects of running and milk protein supplements on Sirtuins and risk factors of metabolic disorders in rats with low aerobic capacity
2019
Background. Physical activity and dietary intake of dairy products are associated with improved metabolic health. Dairy products are rich with branched chain amino acids that are essential for energy production. To gain insight into the mechanisms underlying the benefit of the sub-chronic effects of running and intake of milk protein supplements, we studied Low Capacity Runner rats (LCR), a rodent exercise model with risk for metabolic disorders. We especially focused on the role of Sirtuins, energy level dependent proteins that affect many cellular metabolic processes. Methods. Forty-seven adult LCR female rats sedentary or running voluntarily in wheels were fed normal chow and given suppl…
Does the increase in body weight change the knee and ankle joint loading in walking and running?
2015
Previous obese studies showed that there is a correlation of weight to joint load in the knee joint during walking. In load-carrying studies, there are several studies but no consistent findings in the knee joint loads in walking and running. Our aim was to investigate how the joint load changes in body weight gaining, using added vest that was 10% of the body weight to mimic the conditions. We used Vicon eight-camera system and five force platforms with inverse dynamics to calculate the peak ground reaction forces(GRFs), joint angle, joint moments, and patellofemoral contact forces(PFCF), patellafemoral stress(PFS), peak patellofemoral tendon force(PTF) and peak Achilles tendon force (ATF)…
Biomechanical factors affecting energy cost during running utilising different slopes
2020
This study aimed to examine the characteristics of electromyography (EMG) and kinematics of the supporting leg affecting energy cost while running at incline, level, and decline slopes. Twelve male Japanese middle- and long-distance runners volunteered for this study. The subjects were asked to run at 13.5 km·h−1 on a treadmill under three slope conditions. Sagittal plane kinematics and the EMG of the lower limb muscles, respiratory gases were recorded. Energy cost differed significantly between slopes, being the lowest in decline slope and the greatest in incline slope. Integrated EMG (iEMG) of leg extensor muscles was greater in the incline slope than in the decline slope, and iEMG of the…
Training-induced increase in Achilles tendon stiffness affects tendon strain pattern during running
2019
Background During the stance phase of running, the elasticity of the Achilles tendon enables the utilisation of elastic energy and allows beneficial contractile conditions for the triceps surae muscles. However, the effect of changes in tendon mechanical properties induced by chronic loading is still poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that a training-induced increase in Achilles tendon stiffness would result in reduced tendon strain during the stance phase of running, which would reduce fascicle strains in the triceps surae muscles, particularly in the mono-articular soleus. Methods Eleven subjects were assigned to a training group performing isometric single-leg plantarflexion co…
