Effect of pH, iron and aluminum on survival of early life history stages of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera

2011

Glochidium larvae and juveniles of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera may be sensitive to low pH and metal exposure, but to our knowledge, no tolerance tests have been performed. Therefore, we exposed glochidia, fish-attached glochidia, and juveniles of the pearl mussel to low pH and increased iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) by using realistic pH (6.0–4.5), Fe (0.5–2.0 mg L−1), and Al (0.25–1.0 mg L−1) levels periodically observed in this study site. Survival of glochidia decreased with decreasing pH, increasing Fe, and increasing Al, as well as with increasing Fe + Al concentration in a 72 h exposure. All glochidia died within 24 h in pH 4.5 and Fe 2.0 mg L−1. W…

High-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene to analyze the gut microbiome in juvenile and adult tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus)

2020

Tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) is freshwater and estuarine fish, inhabiting the Earth since the Mesozoic era and undergoing limited physiological variation ever since. Besides its recognized cultural and scientific relevance, the species has seen remarkable growth in its economic impact due to pisciculture. In this study, we present the first report of the whole taxonomic composition of microbial communities in gut contents in juveniles and adults of A. tropicus, by sex and origin (wild and cultivated). For this study, 508 genera were identified, with the most and least abundant being Cetobacterium and Paludibacter, respectively. Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroid…

Association of Variants in the SPTLC1 Gene with Juvenile Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

2021

Key Points Question What genetic variants are associated with juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)? Findings In this family-based genetic study, exome sequencing was performed in 3 patients diagnosed with juvenile ALS and failure to thrive; this identified de novo variants in SPTLC1 (p.Ala20Ser in 2 patients and p.Ser331Tyr in 1 patient). Variants in SPTLC1 are a known cause of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy, type 1A, and these data extend the phenotype associated with this gene. Meaning De novo variants in the SPTLC1 gene are associated with juvenile ALS, a fatal neurological disorder.

Plekstes (Platichthys flesus L) agrīno attīstības stadiju bioloģiskais raksturojums Baltijas jūras centrālajā daļā

2014

ANOTĀCIJA Ustups, 2013. Plekstes (Platichthys flesus L.) agrīno attīstības stadiju bioloģiskais raksturojums Baltijas jūras centrālajā daļā. Plekstu ihtioplanktona daudzumu Baltijas jūras centrālajā daļā nosaka nārsta bara lielums un hidroloģiskie apstākļi. Plekstu mazuļu skaitu piekrastes zonā būtiski ietekmē ūdens temperatūra, mēnesis un vēja virziens. Strauja šāgadeņu augšana novērojama līdz septembrim, bet viengadniekiem no pavasara līdz novembrim.

This article addresses a rigorous qualitative research whose results reflect the causes that generate the vulnerability of children and adolescents to the influence of gangs and how they pass from victims to victimizers. It describes the role played by adolescents in…

A heterocyclic oxime from a fungus with anti-juvenile hormone activity

1998

Two fractions obtained after chromatography of dichloromethane extract of Penicillium brevicompactum culture medium showed anti-juvenile hormone activity. One was active when assayed in vivo against Oncopeltus fasciatus third-instar nymphs, whereas the other showed a strong in vitro inhibition of JH III biosynthesis on Locusta migratoria corpora allata. A subfraction of the latter, constituting 97% of this fraction, is a main component that possessed the juvenile hormone biosynthesis inhibitory activity. Chemical characterization of this compound shows a sesquiterpene-like structure, molecular mass of 278.16185 daltons, corresponding to an empirical formula of C15H22N2O3 named brevioxime. E…

Reproductive effects in German cockroaches by ecdysteroid agonist RH-0345, juvenile hormone analogue methoprene and carbamate benfuracarb

2004

1379-1176 (Print) Journal Article Research Support, Non-U.S. Gov't; Blatta germanica is the more prevalent cockroach species in Algeria. In the present study, we tested the effect on reproduction in B. germanica of two insect growth regulators, RH-0345, a benzoylhydrazine analogue that mimics the action of 20-hydroxyecdysone, and methoprene, one of the most commercially important juvenile hormone analogues, and a novel carbamate insecticide, benfuracarb. The compounds were applied topically (10 and 20 microg/insect for RH-0345, and 1 and 10 microg/insect for methoprene) or orally administrated (at 2% for benfuracarb) on newly emerged females and evaluated on reproductive events during the a…

Oxygen consumption of F0 and F1 larval and juvenile European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax in resonse to ocean acidification and warming

2022

Ongoing climate change is leading to warmer and more acidic oceans. The future distribution of fish within the oceans depends on their capacity to adapt to these new environments. Only few studies have examined the effects of ocean acidification (OA) and warming (OW) on the metabolism of long-lived fish over successive generations. We therefore aimed to investigate the effect of OA on larval and juvenile growth and metabolism on two successive generations of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) as well as the effect of OAW on larval and juvenile growth and metabolism of the second generation. European sea bass is a large economically important fish species with a long generation time…

Analysis of Four Youth Novels for Coeducation

2021
