LSC Abstract – Functional metagenomics of respiratoy microbiome in exacerbated COPD
2015
Background: The course of COPD is frequently aggravated by exacerbations. New molecular techniques have suggested that many bacterial groups, not only the common COPD pathogens, could trigger the exacerbations. Objective: to analyze the microbial community and the gene content of samples obtained during stability and exacerbation of COPD patients. Method: 16S rRNA was pyrosequenced to obtain the taxonomic information. The metabolic information was obtained with the Metagenomics RAST server (MG-RAST) with KEGG database. Results: 8 severe COPD patients were included. At genus level, 68 different OTUs were found. No significant differences in the relative abundance of any of the detected gener…
Influence of synthesis conditions on the performance of chitosan–Heteropolyacid complexes as membranes for low temperature H2–O2 fuel cell
2015
Flat, free-standing chitosan/phosphotungstic acid (PTA) polyelectrolyte membranes were prepared by in-situ ionotropic gelation process at room temperature on porous alumina support firstly impregnated by H3PW12O40. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the formation of compact and homogeneous membranes, whose thickness resulted to be dependent on chitosan concentration and reticulation time. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) evidenced the formation of almost amorphous membrane without appreciable concentration of not protonated NH2 groups and PTA3- ions with preserved Keggin structure. Membranes were tested as proton conductor in low temperature H2-O2 fuel…
MetNet: A two-level approach to reconstructing and comparing metabolic networks
2021
Metabolic pathway comparison and interaction between different species can detect important information for drug engineering and medical science. In the literature, proposals for reconstructing and comparing metabolic networks present two main problems: network reconstruction requires usually human intervention to integrate information from different sources and, in metabolic comparison, the size of the networks leads to a challenging computational problem. We propose to automatically reconstruct a metabolic network on the basis of KEGG database information. Our proposal relies on a two-level representation of the huge metabolic network: the first level is graph-based and depicts pathways a…
Computational annotation of genes differentially expressed along olive fruit development
2009
Abstract Background Olea europaea L. is a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean basin with a worldwide economical high impact. Differently from other fruit tree species, little is known about the physiological and molecular basis of the olive fruit development and a few sequences of genes and gene products are available for olive in public databases. This study deals with the identification of large sets of differentially expressed genes in developing olive fruits and the subsequent computational annotation by means of different software. Results mRNA from fruits of the cv. Leccino sampled at three different stages [i.e., initial fruit set (stage 1), completed pit hardening (stage 2) a…
Keggin heteropolyacid H3PW12O40 supported on different oxides for catalytic and catalytic photo-assisted propene hydration
2013
Catalytic and catalytic photo-assisted hydration of propene to form 2-propanol in gas–solid regime at atmospheric pressure and 85 1C were carried out by using a heteropolyacid (POM) supported on different oxides. Binary materials were prepared by impregnation of H3PW12O40 on different commercial and home prepared supports (TiO2, SiO2, WO3, ZrO2, ZnO, Al2O3). Some of the composites were active both for catalytic and catalytic photo-assisted reactions. The Keggin type POM was completely and partially degraded, when supported on ZnO and Al2O3, respectively, and these binary solids always resulted as inactive for both catalytic and catalytic photo-assisted reactions. The supported Keggin POM sp…

Transcriptomic autophagy-related gene signature investigation for type 2 diabetes in Mediterranean subjects
2021
Abstract Background Autophagy (involving degradation and clearance of damaged organelles and compounds) plays a role in type 2 diabetes (T2D). There are three main types of autophagy and several genes involved. These genes have been well studied in animal models, but there are few transcriptomic studies in humans. Our aim is to analyze the differential gene expression, and the functional enrichment of the main autophagy-related genes (ARG) in T2D subjects from a Mediterranean population Methods We analyzed 120 White-European subjects (mean age 61,4 years; 50% women; 24 T2D) from Valencia, Spain. Clinical and lifestyle data were obtained. ARN was isolated from blood. Transcriptome-wide gene …
Supported H3PW12O40 for 2-propanol (photo-assisted) catalytic dehydration in gas-solid regime: The role of the support and of the pseudo-liquid phase…
2016
Abstract Catalytic and photocatalytic 2-propanol dehydration was carried out by using a supported Keggin heteropolyacid H3PW12O40 (PW12). Binary materials were prepared by impregnation and/or solvothermal treatment by using commercial supports: SiO2 (Mallinckrodt), TiO2 (Evonik P25) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (Sunnano) or home solvothermically prepared SiO2 and TiO2. All the materials have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy observations (SEM) coupled with EDX microanalysis, specific surface area measurements, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. (Photo)catalytic 2-propanol dehydration was studied in gas-solid regim…
Local structure of the supported Keggin and Wells-Dawson heteropolyacids and its consequence on their (photo)catalytic activity
2018
Enhanced (photo)catalytic activity of Wells-Dawson (H6P2W18O62) in comparison to Keggin (H3PW12O40) heteropolyacids for 2-propanol dehydration in gas…
2016
Abstract Catalytic and photocatalytic 2-propanol dehydration to propene at atmospheric pressure and a temperature range of 60–120 °C were carried out in gas-solid regime by using bare and supported Keggin H 3 PW 12 O 40 (PW 12 ) and Wells-Dawson H 6 P 2 W 18 O 62 (P 2 W 18 ) heteropolyacids (HPAs). Binary materials were prepared by impregnation of the HPAs on commercial SiO 2 and TiO 2 . The Wells-Dawson was in any case more active than the Keggin heteropolyacid and the differences were enhanced when the supported samples were used. In particular, Wells-Dawson HPA supported on TiO 2 and under irradiation showed the highest activity. The HPA species played the key role both in the catalytic …
