Despite considerable theoretical interest in how the evolution of phenotypic plasticity should be shaped by environmental variability and stochasticity, how individuals actually respond to these aspects of the environment within their own lifetimes remains unclear. Suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa avioliitto nähtiin vuosisatojen ajan jumalallisena instituutiona. Kirkon valta avioliittoihin nähden oli suuri, sillä se vihki avioparit ja myönsi myös harvinaiset avioerot. Avioliitto oli yhteiskunnan yksi perusyksikkö, ja sen säilyvyys nähtiin koko yhteiskuntarauhan vuoksi välttämättömänä. Suomi ajautui pian itsenäistymisensä jälkeen sisällissotaan talvella 1918. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan sisällissotaa paikallisella tasolla ja oikeuslaitoksen näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään, miten sota näkyi ja vaikutti kihlakunnanoikeuden toimintaan vuosina 1918–1919. Tutkimuspaikkakunnat ovat Leppävirta, Joroinen ja Puumala. Sota koetteli tutkimuspaikkakuntia eri tavoin. Leppävirralla ja Joroisissa sota koettiin laajamittaisesti, eivätkä pitäjät säästyneet taisteluilta.
