Acoustic wave tunneling across a vacuum gap between two piezoelectric crystals with arbitrary symmetry and orientation

It is not widely appreciated that an acoustic wave can “jump” or “tunnel” across a vacuum gap between two piezoelectric solids, nor has the general case been formulated or studied in detail. Here, we remedy that situation, by presenting a general formalism and approach to study such an acoustic tunneling effect between two arbitrarily oriented anisotropic piezoelectric semi-infinite crystals. The approach allows one to solve for the reflection and transmission coefficients of all the partial-wave modes, and is amenable to practical numerical or even analytical implementation, as we demonstrate by a few chosen examples. Essays on wages, promotions and performance evaluations

This dissertation comprises four empirical research articles that use personnel data from a large university and worker-level panel data from Finland to examine the determinants of wages, promotions and employee performance evaluations. The first article employs personnel data to examine the importance of worker output and job seniority as predictors of employee performance evaluations and promotions. The results suggest that better-performing employees – with output measured both in absolute terms and relative to peers – were more likely to be assigned higher performance grades and had a higher probability of being promoted to more complex jobs than their peers with similar characteristics…

AbstractThe aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate the temporal dynamics of ethical organisational culture and how it associates with well-being at work when potential changes in ethical culture are measured over an extended period of 6 years. We used a person-centred study design, which allowed us to detect both typical and atypical patterns of ethical culture stability as well as change among a sample of leaders. Ethical dilemmas and well-being in teachers’ work : A three-wave, two-year longitudinal study

The aim of the present longitudinal study was two-fold: First, to explore what kinds of ethical dilemma groups can be identified among Finnish teachers (n = 310) and second, to examine how these groups differ from each other with respect to occupational well-being and recovery from job strain over the two-year follow-up. Using Latent Profile Analysis, three ethical dilemma prevalence groups were identified: rare (27%), occasional (51%), and frequent dilemmas (22%). Teachers in frequent dilemmas group reported highest burnout, however, their recovery from job strain improved and their burnout (exhaustion) diminished over time. Ydinjätteen loppusijoitus on ydinvoiman elinkaareen liittyvä seikka, jota ei ole vielä aloitettu missään. Suomessa ja Ruotsissa ydinjätteen loppusijoituksessa aiotaan käyttää Ruotsissa kehitettyä KBS-3-menetelmää, jonka turvallisuus on kuitenkin herättänyt keskustelua niin asiantuntijoiden kesken kuin julkisuudessa. KBS-3-loppusijoitusmenetelmän turvallisuuteen liittyvä riskikeskustelu on lähes kyseenalaistanut menetelmän käytön Ruotsissa, kun taas Suomessa keskustelu on yleistynyt myöhemmin. Tutkielmani tarkoituksena on osoittaa, kuinka ruokakirjat osaltaan aktiivisesti luovat ja toisintavat käsitystämme luokasta ja sukupuolesta. Tutkielmassani jaottelen ruokakirjallisuuden gastronomiseen kirjallisuuteen ja keittokirjallisuuteen. Gastronominen kirjallisuus on perinteisesti ollut miehisen eliitin laji. Arkiseen käytännöllisyyteen keskittyvät keittokirjat ovat puolestaan olleet naisten kirjallisuutta. Ruoan ja luokan yhteydessä keskeisenä teoreettisena kehyksenä toimivat Pierre Bourdieun ajatukset mausta ja luokasta sekä kulttuurisesta ja ekonomisesta pääomasta. Ruokaa ja sukupuolta puolestaan pohdin sekä ruoka-aineiden että ruoanvalmistuksen sukupuolittuneisuuden kautta. Tapause…
