Understanding innovation in creative industries: knowledge bases and innovation performance in art restoration organisations

2018

[EN] This paper studies innovation in the creative industry of art restoration, which is characterised by an intensive use of symbolic knowledge. Using the resource-based view of the firm as a theoretical framework, this study adapts Community Innovation Survey (CIS) methodology to this industry, creating and exploiting a unique dataset from the restoration departments of museums in 43 countries on 5 continents. The results suggest that the type and composition of the knowledge bases in play influence a department¿s absorptive capacity to access external information sources and thereby impact innovative outcomes. The article contributes to innovation literature by capturing innovation proce…

The effect of knowledge spillovers on productivity growth inequalities in Spanish regions

2004

We investigate the impact of local and foreign forms of knowledge spillover on productivity growth inequalities in Spanish regions. In each sector and region such inequalities will depend on the innovative capacity of the region and on local spillovers emanating from proximity to innovation producers and from the composition of economic activity in the region. Foreign spillovers will be mainly from trade with other regions or countries. Panel estimation results indicate that local sector human capital and specialisation patterns, public-R&D efforts—both local and from other regions—and international technological imports reduce these growth differentials. The regional level of developm…

Kansalaisrohkeus : tottelemattomia yksilöitä, yhteisöjä, tutkijoita

2019

Katsausteksti tarkastelee kansalaisrohkeutta ja kansalaistottelemattomuutta useista eri näkökulmista käsin, pohtien muun muassa yksilön ja kollektiivien organisoitumista epäoikeudenmukaisuuden ja epätasa-arvon vastustamiseksi, kansalaisuuteen liittyviä jännitteitä, erilaisia demokratiakäsityksiä, tutkijoiden yhteiskunnallista roolia ja vastuuta sekä kriittisen akateemisen tiedontuotannon merkitystä.

[ESCULAPIO: A project to elaborate strategies and actions of multi-purpose health communication on vaccine preventable infectious diseases in order t…

2019

ESCULAPIO Project, funded by the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CCM) of the Italian Ministry of Health, for the program 2013, aims at increasing awareness on vaccine preventable infectious diseases (VPID) and vaccination in different targets of population and at spreading the culture of prevention by the development of information/training interventions on VPID. In Tuscany Region (Central Italy), educational courses on VPID in high schools were organized and students were stimulated to prepare informative materials on VPID for lower grade school pupils. Educational games for school pupils were realized in Liguria Region (Northern Italy) with the aim to increase awareness and kno…

Formal Project Organization and Informal Social Networks: Regional Advantages in the Emergent Animation Industry in Oslo, Norway

2011

This article focuses on the social networks that facilitate projects based activities in one particular part of cultural industries. Cultural industries are dependent on flexible ways of organizing their work because they operate in unpredictable markets. However, the organization of work in temporary projects challenges some key assumptions when it comes to the need for long-term, stable relationships for innovative and effective organizations. A key question is thus how firms that do not have a formal organization that creates stable relationships manage to create continuity in what they do. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with core firms that operate within the animation…

Removing the barriers to adoption of social OER environments

2015

Despite the opportunities and benefits of OER, research and practice has shown how the OER repositories have a hard time in reaching an active user-base. The opportunities of experience exchange and simple feedback mechanisms of social software have been realized for improving the situation and many are basing or transforming their OER offerings towards socially powered environments. Research on social software has shown how knowledge-sharing barriers in online environments are highly culture and context-specific and require proper investigation. It is crucial to study what challenges might arise in such environments and how to overcome them, ensuring a successful uptake. A large-scale (N =…

Social Affordances for People with Lifelong Disability through Using Virtual Worlds

2013

In the information age, information and communication technology (ICT) is an asset for supporting people with disability to participate and be included in society. Research indicates that virtual worlds may help this group to gain independence and improve social participation. The aim of the present research was to explore the role that virtual worlds play in facilitating people with disability to experience a self-perceived improvement of social participation, independence and well-being. Using qualitative methods our results indicate that people with lifelong disability perceive that they reach a larger and more diverse network through the use of virtual worlds. Based on identified Qualit…

Performance and energy optimisation in CPUs through fuzzy knowledge representation

2019

Abstract This paper presents an automatic design space exploration using processor design knowledge for the multi-objective optimisation of a superscalar microarchitecture enhanced with selective load value prediction (SLVP). We introduced new important SLVP parameters and determined their influence regarding performance, energy consumption, and thermal dissipation. We significantly enlarged initial processor design knowledge expressed through fuzzy rules and we analysed its role in the process of automatic design space exploration. The proposed fuzzy rules improve the diversity and quality of solutions, and the convergence speed of the design space exploration process. Experiments show tha…
