Using organizational influence processes to overcome IS implementation barriers: lessons from a longitudinal case study of SPI implementation
2014
A fundamental tenet of the information systems (IS) discipline holds that: (a) a lack of formal power and influence over the organization targeted for change, (b) weak support from top management, and (c) organizational memories of prior failures are barriers to implementation success. Our research, informed by organization influence, compellingly illustrates that such conditions do not necessarily doom a project to failure. In this paper, we present an analysis of how an IS implementation team designed and enacted a coordinated strategy of organizational influence to achieve implementation success despite these barriers. Our empirical analysis also found that technology implementation and …
Enterprise content management: An integrated perspective on information management
2005
Konferansebidrag fra 38th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2005. HICSS 2005 Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is an emerging concept involving numerous software vendors, consultants, and information management practitioners around increasing market potential. However, there exist yet few academic reports on ECM from the viewpoint of organizational system implementations. This article analyses 58, mainly practitioner-oriented, case narratives of ECM projects and implementations to identify a framework of major issues that require managerial attention in organizations. The main areas covered by the framework are: objectives/impacts sought with ECM, enterprise model…
Flexible pattern discovery with (extended) disjunctive logic programming
2005
The post-genomic era showed up a wide range of new challenging issues for the areas of knowledge discovery and intelligent information management. Among them, the discovery of complex pattern repetitions in string databases plays an important role, specifically in those contexts where even what are to be considered the interesting pattern classes is unknown. This paper provides a contribution in this precise setting, proposing a novel approach, based on disjunctive logic programming extended with several advanced features, for discovering interesting pattern classes from a given data set.
Insights on Partial Information Sharing in Supply Chain dynamics
2015
This paper provides an assessment of partial Information Sharing (IS) in Supply Chain (SC). We study the dynamics of collaborative multi-echelon structure, characterized by an increasing level of information visibility among partners. To do so, we mathematically model six four-echelon serial SCs via difference equations and conduct numerical simulations on the basis of a robust design of experiment. Results shows how (1) as the extent of IS increases, the performance of whole SC improves as well, and (2) the impact of IS depends not on which particular members are involved but on the number of collaborative members.
On the Nature of Information Management in Complex and Natural Disasters
2015
Abstract The purpose of this paper is to present reflections on the nature of information management (IM) and its role and function to support coordination in one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time, the Syria crisis. Starting from general principles for humanitarian information management, we analyze the challenges that information managers face in conflict situations, when information is – more than anywhere else – a source of power and influence. This work outlines the interdependence of advocacy and operational information management, the sensitivity of information, and barriers to information sharing. The results are complex and highly interlaced information and coordination…
Context-sensitive text mining with fitness leveling Genetic Algorithm
2015
Contextual processing is a great challenge for information retrieval study - the most approved techniques include scanning content of HTML web pages, user supported metadata analysis, automatic inference grounded on knowledge base, or content-oriented digital documents analysis. We propose a meta-heuristic by making use of Genetic Algorithms for Contextual Search (GACS) built on genetic programming (GP) and custom fitness leveling function to optimize contextual queries in exact search that represents unstructured phrases generated by the user. Our findings show that the queries built with GACS can significantly optimize the retrieval process.
A framework for context-sensitive metadata description
2006
Expectations regarding the new generation of Web depend on the success of Semantic Web technology. Resource Description Framework (RDF) is a basis for explicit and machine-readable representation of semantics. However RDF is not suitable for describing dynamic and context-sensitive resources (eg. processes). We present the Context Description Framework (CDF) as an extension of the RDF by adding a 'TrueInContext' component to the basic RDF triple ('subject-predicate-object'), and consider contextual value as a container of RDF statements. We also add a probabilistic component, which allows multilevel contextual dependence descriptions as well as presumes possibility for Bayesian reasoning wi…
Content Code Blurring: A New Approach to Content Extraction
2008
Most HTML documents on the world wide web contain far more than the article or text which forms their main content. Navigation menus, functional and design elements or commercial banners are typical examples of additional contents. Content extraction is the process of identifying the main content and/or removing the additional contents. We introduce content code blurring, a novel content extraction algorithm. As the main text content is typically a long, homogeneously formatted region in a web document, the aim is to identify exactly these regions in an iterative process. Comparing its performance with existing content extraction solutions we show thatfor most documents content code blurrin…
Semantic web service discovery system for road traffic information services
2015
Create a multi-agent platform for a traveller information system (FIPA standards).Extend Paulucci algorithm with the use of seven similarity measures.Weight the similarity measure according to semantic relation and parameter nature.Improved running-time with a filtering pre-process for non-functional parameters.Improved the recall by measuring the sibling relationship concepts. We describe a multi-agent platform for a traveller information system, allowing travellers to find the road traffic information web service (WSs) that best fits their requirements. After studying existing proposals for discovery of semantic WS, we implemented a hybrid matching algorithm, which is described in detail …
Extracting Semantic Knowledge from Unstructured Text Using Embedded Controlled Language
2016
Nowadays, most of the data on the Web is still in the form of unstructured text. Knowledge extraction from unstructured text is highly desirable but extremely challenging due to the inherent ambiguity of natural language. In this article, we present an architecture of an information extraction system based on the concept of Embedded Controlled Language that allows for extracting formal semantic knowledge from an unstructured text corpus. Moreover, the presented approach has a potential to support multilingual input and output.
