On the use of information systems research methods in data mining
2006
Information systems are powerful instruments for organizational problem solving through formal information processing (Lyytinen, 1987). Data mining (DM) and knowledge discovery are intelligent tools that help to accumulate and process data and make use of it (Fayyad, 1996). Data mining bridges many technical areas, including databases, statistics, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. The set of data mining processes used to extract and verify patterns in data is the core of the knowledge discovery process. Numerous data mining techniques have recently been developed to extract knowledge from large databases. The area of data mining is historically more related to AI (Artificial…
Natural Language-Based Knowledge Extraction in Healthcare Domain
2019
There is a growing amount of data in the databases of hospitals. These data could be exploited to alleviate the decision-making process of hospital managers, physicians and researchers. However, these types of end-users often lack the expertise necessary for extracting those data from the database. Several approaches exist in the field of how to allow non-programmers writing queries in a convenient manner, but none of them has yet reached fully satisfactory results. This paper sketches a solution to this problem by introducing means for writing queries in a keywords-containing natural language thus alleviating the query writing process for the end-user. Introducing this approach in the know…
Knowledge flow in Technological Business Incubators: Evidence from Australia and Israel
2015
The study of the contribution of incubators to economic growth started to gain momentum in the 1980s, following the growth of the incubation phenomenon. While acknowledging the challenge of evaluating incubators׳ outcomes, we shift the focus from incubators׳ performance to their internal processes, in particular, the interrelationships through which the incubator stakeholders share knowledge. The literature suggests that small new ventures tend to fail because they lack managerial experience and ability to raise capital in an early stage. Incubators are expected to overcome these obstacles by offering experienced monitoring skills and by enhancing access to capital at a firm׳s early stage. …
Outcomes of primary teacher education in Finland : an exit survey
2016
Seven final year cohorts of Finnish pre-service primary teachers (N = 384) were given an exit survey, which measured their estimated attainment of knowledge and experience in the 10 domains of professional activity considered critical for new teachers in the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) standards. The results indicated that the profile of the graduates was uneven, showing low levels of satisfaction in the fields of special education and cooperation but high levels of satisfaction in the fields of reflective practice and planning. The satisfaction with the estimated knowledge and experience achieved was divided into three components of pedagogic, instruct…
Letter knowledge predicts Grade 4 reading fluency and reading comprehension
2008
Abstract The present study examined the predictors of fourth graders' reading skills (reading comprehension, text reading and word chain reading). Reading skill antecedents of 158 children of 5–6 years of age were measured at the beginning of kindergarten; students' reading skills were measured in kindergarten and in Grades 1 and 4. The results showed that children's letter knowledge at the beginning of kindergarten was the most powerful predictor of their reading skills at the end of Grade 4. Other predictors were metacognitive awareness, gender, mother's level of education, and visual attention. Phonological awareness at kindergarten affected reading skills at Grade 4 through reading skil…
Knowledge Management towards a digitalization era: systematic review of past research and future directions
2017
This paper presents a systematic analysis of knowledge management (KM) research spanning the last four decades. The analysis is tracing the research paradigms, the theoretical premises and the objects of study of extant research building on the accomplishments of the past to map the key dimensions of KM as a research domain. Furthermore, a number of directions for future research are identified. The review provides a conceptual basis for synthesizing and extending KM research. During the past four decades, KM matured as a domain and its popularity increased for both academics and practitioners. The interest in KM is fueled by digitalization and the turn to a knowledge economy. The systemati…
Kromos: Ontology based information management for ICT societies
2009
Over the last few years, several projects for the development of innovative systems capable of collecting and sharing information have been carried out, following the increasing companies' interest on a correct knowledge management. ICT companies' managers have realized that knowledge and its management, more than the mere data, constitute fundamental part of their activities. This paper proposes a Knowledge Management System whose main feature is an underlying ontological knowledge representation. This data representation allows the specialization of the reasoning capabilities and the provision of ad hoc behaviors. The system has been designed for the management of projects and processes a…
VisAdapt: A Visualization Tool to Support Climate Change Adaptation.
2017
In this article we present the design and implementation of the web-based visualization tool VisAdapt, developed to support homeowners in the Nordic countries to assess anticipated climate change and climate related risks which are expected to negatively impact their living conditions. The tool guides the user through a three-step visual exploration process to facilitate the exploration of risks and adaptation measures, specifically adapted to the user. VisAdapt has been developed over the course of two years in close collaboration with domain experts and end users to ensure the validity of the included data and the efficiency of the visual interface. Although VisAdapt is designed for Nordi…
Transforming food systems at local levels: using participatory system dynamics in an interactive manner to refine small-scale farmers’ mental models
2017
Food systems will need to undergo considerable transformation. To be better prepared for and resilient to uncertainty and disturbances in the future, resource users and managers need to further develop knowledge about the food and farming system, with its dominating feedback structures and complexities, and to test robust and integrated system-based solutions. This paper investigates how participatory system dynamics modeling can be adapted to groups at the community level with low or no formal educational background. The paper also analyses the refinement of workshop participants’ mental models as a consequence of a participatory system dynamics intervention. For this purpose, we ran two w…
