(Re)Defining Smart Education
2018
In the increasingly interconnected world, the relationship among learning and teaching, innovation and innovativeness, entrepreneurship, business development, as well as sustainable and inclusive socio-economic growth and development, requires a multidimensional interdisciplinary analysis. Importantly, information systems and advancements in sophisticated information and communication technologies (ICTs) are consequential for the potential inherent in education to be exploited. This edited volume opens discussion on ways and strategies of exploiting opportunities and synergies, which the maturing relationship between smart education and information systems offers. In this context, the objec…
How Companies Develop a Culture for Digital Innovation: A Multiple-Case Study
2021
Companies are constantly facing new challenges through digital technologies, as they can cause rapid changes in their business environment. Digital innovations can offer the opportunity to gain competitive advantages, but in practice, companies often struggle to create the conditions for this. Developing a culture for digital innovation is an important capability that companies need to build. It includes appropriate organizational structures, working methods, skills, and new ways of thinking in the innovation process. This has been explored in previous research at a high level of abstraction. Our paper complements past findings with a detailed study of what activities companies are doing in…
Integration of IT Applications in Local Government Computer Systems
2015
Integration of IT applications in companies has always been a hot topic in recent years, leading to the creation of a new working style in the software: Enterprise Application Integration. To present the essence and very detailed image of this, is a main purpose of the paper. After a literature review, authors have described a chosen system, which is being used by the local government entities. The first part of the article traces the evolution of embedded computing applications management companies and the problems that were inevitable faced during the integration efforts. Then, in the article, the infrastructure of EAI is presented, with the detailed description of its: Front, Back, Middl…
On the Role of Interpretation Schemes in Organizational IS Implementation
2006
The objective of this study is to clarify how interpretation schemes held by people involved in organizational IS change affect implementation efforts and the outcomes of user participation. It is found that interpretation schemes are dealt with in many ways in IS literature and the approaches are diverse and scattered. Based on the findings, It is asserted that during IS change, not only "tangible" changes are made, but first and foremost changes are needed to occur in the interpretation schemes that give meaning to the phenomena changed. It is also suggested that the outcomes of user participation are mediated by the interpretation schemes of the participants and, consequently, the effect…
Introduction to the Management of Knowledge Systems Design and Deployment Projects Minitrack
2012
Knowledge systems are increasingly used to support globally distributed work. Projects are a natural means of designing and deploying such systems. There is plenty of literature on the management of information systems design projects and some literature on information systems deployment projects. However, knowledge systems are typically more complex organizationally and socially than most traditional information systems. For example, enterprise resource planning systems typically must be used to get the work done whereas many knowledge systems are voluntary to use. It is reasonable to assume that project management involved in the design and deployment of knowledge systems differs from the…
A Data Model for Describing and Exchanging Personal Achieved Learning Outcomes (PALO)
2010
Employers seek people that match particular qualifications and graduates seek jobs that match their qualifications. This market is currently managed primarily using paper certificates and heterogeneous university management systems that capture achieved learning outcomes as well as corporate information systems that capture required qualifications. In light of trends toward increased student mobility, employability and lifelong learning, this situation is less than satisfactory. Therefore, in this paper, the authors propose a schema that facilitates interoperable storage and management of Personal Achieved Learning Outcomes (PALO) based on a common data model. This paper presents use case s…

A Framework for Small Group Support in Online Collaborative Learning - Combining Collaboration Scripts and Online Tutoring
2017
Many learners experience difficulties engaging in collaborative learning activities online. Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) scripts have been implemented to support online learners. Collaboration scripts have shown much potential in facilitating students’ general collaboration skills. However, reported effects of collaboration scripts on domain-specific knowledge acquisition have been less positive. In this paper, I suggest an alternative framework for supporting CSCL learners by combining collaboration scripting and online tutoring. While collaboration scripts can facilitate the acquisition of general collaboration skills, the online tutor is capable of monitoring and asse…
SEMANTIC MANAGEMENT OF INTELLIGENT MULTI-AGENTS SYSTEMS IN A 3D ENVIRONMENT
2011
8 pages; International audience; This paper presents a new approach combining the 3D elements composing the environment of mobile agents with semantic descriptors from Building Information Models. Our proposal is based on the IFC standard, which is used in the field of Civil Engineering to build digital models of buildings during the design phase. The semantic of IFC objects composing the 3D environment is used to select and set up 3D objects and elements of simulation scenarios. The result of this process dynamically generates the input files for the JaSIM environment that performs the simulation. These files deserve the representation of the virtual environment in which the simulation is …
