Memetic Engineering for Permanent Education in Line with Sustainable Growth

2012

Given the recent point of view of the European Commission regarding the implementation of a new strategy for sustainable growth and jobs, this paper emphasises the opportunity and urgency of supporting the EU 2020 strategy, providing an appropriate educational tool for the knowledge society. The main objectives are: a. adapting memetic engineering expressed in terms of General System Theory to the teaching component of permanent education based on bounded rationality and "Just in Time"as key tools for fighting cognitive chaoplexity in the post-industrial era; b. facilitating the use of memetic engineering based on its double-faceted nature: as both positive and negative feedback; c. extendi…

WHO Working Group on Health Literacy in Schools

2020

Abstract Background Addressing children`s and adolescents` health literacy is a bedrock for personal and societal growth, health and wellbeing over the life-course, and sustainable development in the WHO European Region and beyond. Promoting health literacy competencies should already be addressed in schools. To outline a strategy for the national education sectors, WHO Europe has launched a working group on health literacy in schools, which aims to develop a conceptual framework for decision makers within the educational and health sector to advocate for health literacy, facilitate the implementation process, and support the uptake on the national level. Methods Based on expert workshops a…

Strategic planning and management of national development processes in Latvia

2009

Thanks to achieved productive collaboration of the highest level government institutions with the academic community experts, a national strategic planning system is shaping that is very significant for further development of Latvia. General principles of the system have been approved by the Law on Development Planning System. The conceptual document A Growth Model for Latvia: People First defines a knowledge‐based human‐centred development scenario. The National Development Plan has been approved as a mid‐term programme for implementation of the Model. To monitor progress towards the goal an integrated quantified quality of life index was developed; the index includes priorities essential …

Local Knowledge and Resources as Driving Forces of Sustainable Bioeconomy

2018

A major driving force to promote the idea of sustainable bioeconomy could be local experiences, skills and knowledge in respect to the use of local and natural materials (at first, biomaterials). Sustainable bioeconomy is a concept under development, and as such it requires argumentation and demonstration of efficiency. The aim of this chapter is to study the local knowledge of the Baltic region in terms of the applicability of local biomaterials in production. In the context of bioeconomy, there is an evident need to identify the possibilities for the use of natural and local materials as well as the knowledge to manage these resources. Natural materials of the Baltic region, such as hemp,…

Examining the Impact of ICT on Sustainable Development: A Data-Driven Narrative

2021

Considering the challenges of sustainable development and the mixed prescriptions being offered by the use of digital technologies, we present a data-driven narrative of how ICT development impacts the sustainable growth of economies. The analysis is based on historical panel data from 39 economies across the developed and developing economies. The industry-standard CRISP-DM methodology was applied as it is flexible, robust, and offers a practical approach for data analytics. The findings reveal that there are differentiated outcomes in terms of sustainable growth among high-income and low-income economies. This poses legitimate questions as to whether low-income economies will be able to m…

Barriers and Bridges for Landscape Stewardship and Knowledge Production to Sustain Functional Green Infrastructures

2018

Sustainable landscapes and regions require both stewardship and management to sustain the composition, structure and function of ecosystems as a base for delivering human benefits. This complex is captured by the topic of ecosystem services. To deliver these, the concept green (or blue) infrastructure emerged as a tool for spatial planning of networks of natural and semi-natural areas. Such planning requires evidence-based knowledge about both ecological and social systems. For ecosystems, states and trends need be monitored, and improved knowledge must be developed about ecological tipping points for assessment of sustainability, as well as measures for conservation, management and restora…

Higher Education in a Sustainable Society: Addressing Knowledge Disparities and Enabling Debate

2015

Sustainability is a comprehensive concept. It addresses the complex relation between and effect of social and economic development. It is a concept that challenges us to see things in relation to each other and in a larger perspective. The sustainability challenge however, comes at a time when sciences and research has expanded but at the same time is more fragmented than ever. In this chapter we introduce Mutual Competence Building a concept for guiding the sustainability engagement of Higher Education.

Process and technology challenges in swift-starting virtual teams

2007

Originally published in the journal Information & Management : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/03787206 Virtual teams often face tight schedules and a need to start quickly and perform instantly. The goal of our study was to enhance understanding of the challenges faced by such teams. We used time–interaction–performance theory as the framework for following the processes and functions within virtual teams working on a systems development task. Our study provided a detailed examination of the group process, applied to virtual teams working under time pressure. The challenges faced by virtual teams in such settings showed that teams must work to enhance their effectiveness in mu…

A Rule-Based System for Hardware Configuration and Programming of IoT Devices

2019

Simplifying programming, deployment, and configuration of heterogeneous networked IoT devices requires networking, hardware, representation of knowledge and concepts, design and programming skills. In fact, IoT applications are mostly built by adopting different existing paradigms and technologies on a case-by-case basis. As a result, programming tools hinder adaptability and interoperability of applications with their rigidity. In this paper, we propose a rule-based system that configures and programs IoT devices automatically. The rule base holds formal specifications about hardware platforms, networking protocols, physical world concepts, and applications. Provided with a high-level appl…
