Techniques for Learning Scientific Knowledge from Texts
2019
HCI for biomedical decision-making: From diagnosis to therapy.
2020
Abstract Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) plays a fundamental role in the design of software oriented towards clinical decision-making tasks. Currently, physicians have to deal with an ensemble of systems and software tools in the clinical environment, such as clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs), Electronic Health Records (EHRs), Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACSs). Moreover, additional platforms aim at collaborative work particularly in telemedicine, where rehabilitation technologies and conversational agents can support the healthcare professionals.
Adaptation of the Model for Assessment of Telemedicine (MAST) for IoT Telemedicine Services
2017
Internet of Things (IoT) based solutions and services may be used to support and extend the independent living of older adults in their living environments by responding to real needs of caregivers, service providers and public authorities. Telemedicine and telehealth platforms are among the various types of IoT services that could support the provision of health services. Current Health Technology Assessment (HTA) models that are used for the evaluation of telehealth and telemedicine services do not consider IoT aspects. HTA models would ideally need to be extended to include IoT platforms, for an optimal introduction of IoT in everyday provision of health and care services. This paper pre…
A holistic framework for understanding acceptance of remote patient management (RPM) systems by non-professional users
2010
The successful integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in healthcare facilitates the use of the sophisticated medical equipment and computer applications by medical practitioners. If earlier medical systems were mainly used by the health professionals (e.g. medical staff or nurses), nowadays with the appearance of Internet health systems are becoming available to the broader user groups, particularly patients and their families. eHealth has become an active research and development area within healthcare industry. Another important tendency in the development of ICT for health is a shift from “hospital-centered” to “person-centered” health systems which can enable ma…
Decision support system for telemedicine based on multiple expertise
2002
This paper discusses results of the research in the area of artificial intelligence applications in telemedicine. The main goal of research is to manage multiple expertise obtained from experts-physicians in different countries to develop decision support medical system of broad earmarking based on telecommunication tools. The multilevel representation of medical data is discussed based on the apparatus of metastatistics. The technique is able to acquire semantically essential information from complex dynamics of quasi-periodical medical signals by applying recursively ordinary statistical tools. The voting-type technique is used to find consensus among medical experts in their description …
Knowledge-based modelling applied to synucleinopathies
2015
International audience; The adoption of telemedicine technologies has enabled collaborative programs involving a variety of links among distributed medical structures and health officials and professionals. The use for telemedicine for transmission of medical data and the possibility for several distant physicians to share their knowledge on given medical cases provides clear benefits, but also raises several unsolved conceptual and technical challenges. The seamless exchange and access of medical information between medical structures, health professionals, and patients is a prerequisite for the harmonious development of this new medical practice. This paper proposes a new approach of sema…
What Do Secondary Students Really Learn during Investigations with Living Animals? Parameters for Effective Learning with Social Insects
2016
ABSTRACTExemplary for social insects, Temnothorax ants allow for various hands-on investigations in biology classes. The aim of this study was to provide a quantitative and qualitative analysis of secondary school students’ learning achievement after teaching units with ants lasting between one and six weeks. The questionnaires included transfer and factual knowledge tasks divided into eight fields of knowledge. Students (N = 459) from 22 classes participated in the study and received different treatments: The experimental group (n = 366) started their investigations by initial observation using stereo microscopes, while the control group (n = 93) conducted ant research without this i…
Regional Innovation System as a Framework for the Co-generation of Policy: An Action Research Approach
2018
Policy makers in regional development often relate their policies to frameworks proposed by researchers in the field. Of these frameworks, the regional innovation system (RIS) has been one of the most influential. This chapter focuses on the difficulties that arise when policy makers try to enact the RIS and other related frameworks and proposes action research—and, more specifically, a co-generative approach—to help face these challenges. The starting point for this proposal is an analysis of the differences and similarities between the observer and co-generative research approaches. Most research in this field has been developed with researchers positioned as outside observers, and co-gen…
Accuracy and Completeness of Drug Information in Wikipedia: A Comparison with Standard Textbooks of Pharmacology
2014
The online resource Wikipedia is increasingly used by students for knowledge acquisition and learning. However, the lack of a formal editorial review and the heterogeneous expertise of contributors often results in skepticism by educators whether Wikipedia should be recommended to students as an information source. In this study we systematically analyzed the accuracy and completeness of drug information in the German and English language versions of Wikipedia in comparison to standard textbooks of pharmacology. In addition, references, revision history and readability were evaluated. Analysis of readability was performed using the Amstad readability index and the Erste Wiener Sachtextforme…
